I know it's hard with four sides but say if Larkham left the Brums at the end of next year (hypothetical) I'd prefer a guy like Mowen or Palmer get the job and we grow the pool of Australian pro HCs.
I like this idea theortetically, but I reckon Australian rugby would be far better off if they included a "must have coached in a major pro competition overseas" element to the selection criteria. Super Rugby is still a good comp, but it's focus is very narrow.

We will be left behind if our coaching staff isn't proving themselves OS - that's where the best players, and game innovations are happening these days

I get that and I think most will tick that box through personal career movements like Cron but if the right guy is in house why give them to someone else who may not let them go. That feature is probably in most job packs when they do pop up I assume. Would coaching a Japanese D2 or D3 count as much as being a 3-4 year Super Rugby AC? I do think French exposure would be awesome. They are managing big squads, multiple comps with the pressure of promotion/relegation.

Look at a guy like Halangahu. Has said he's happy in NZ and it will shit me up the wall if he ends up HC over there. I tend to think he won't move for an AC job but a HC would. That's the life for coaches.

The problem is, we cry foul about the 'talent drain' when top players and coaches head overseas, but then also expect them to have refined skillsets from diverse experiences. Can't have it both ways.

I never complain about coaches going overseas - that's not talent drain - it's how we will get better as a rugby nation. We get back many/most in the end anyway.

Are there any Australia A games booked in for this year after the Lions tour?

It'd be great for the transition for Les Kiss to coach the A side for a few games on tour, both to get that deeper understanding of how Schmidt is running the program and to give a wider group of players exposure to him. Could also be a very good opportunity for him to work with any super assistants that might be considered for the wallabies program (Dan Palmer the obvious one).

Does his Reds contract allow him to coach Australia A games?

(I'd imagine the Reds wouldn't get in the way if they didn't have their own tour or similar going on, but what's the contractual situation?)

Not sure about the specifics of his contract, but given the modern Australia A program has always been run by super assistants I can't see their being too much of a barrier to a head coach doing it. It would probably ultimately be their say to release him for it, but if they were open to him coaching both the Reds and Wallabies then this is something they'd almost certainly consider.

The other side of it is that the QRU may want to book in a tour for the Reds for the express purpose of Zane Hilton running it as a bit of a warm up/trial run if he is going to step into the role after Kiss.

Les should stay focussed on the Reds, as he has said he is doing.
I don't really think it would be a significant dilution of his focus. Even if the Reds were touring at the time, once you take out the Wallabies and Australia A players then most of what is left with the Reds are the fringe guys coming through over the next few years, not as much the players who will be front and center in 2026. The way he runs the coaching team he'd have to be confident in them doing it for a few weeks in the off season without him.
