CAS Rugby 2025

If Barker win after winning just 1 game in Japan, that will be a sad indictment on the quality of Schoolboy rugby in Australia
To be fair Barker were very honourable in giving all touring players good game time at Sanix and mixing up combinations - when they had most of their perceived 'stars' on together they looked very strong, and the time their 'developing' players got (alongside the stars in battle which would have helped them immeasurably) will be invaluable if injuries occur..... tomorrow night v SHORE will be the truest sign of their potential, and as a Knox diehard and knowing the current age groups very very well, they're a big chance of going very very well....

They won 1 game and were comfortably beaten in the 5th to 8th playoffs
Spin however you want, long way to go, to win 1 game.

as stated, I'm a Knox diehard and not trying to 'spin' anything - most schools/coaches I think would have taken a far different approach, but if you watch eac h game (I did) there's a lot of talent that could change the trajectory, fast

Which of the games on youtube is the best to watch to get the right impression of the talent that could change the trajectory, fast - honest question

Cranbrook will win- mark my words.
Couldn't agree more, I think Cranbrook has a great chance at taking that third spot from Knox considering the differentials in both Knox's and Cranbrook's game against Shore. Couldn't remember the exact scores in both but I believe Cranbrook had a much better outcome. Although that top three will be hard to break, the clash between Cranbrook and Knox should be good this season. That's a game to look out for. Scrum on!

I'd have to agree, although it is still just trials and barker is always strong, the results in japan are dissapointing considering there exepected potential. I'm sure they will bounce back but when? Could knox, waverly or even cranbrook overcome them before them?

Should be a real test for Cranbrook—definitely looking forward to this one.

Thanks OMan.

Barker, Waverly, and Know have always been formidable rugby schools. I truly wonder why the remaining CAS schools, particularly Aloys and Cranbrook, avoid investing into their younger rugby programs.

Not only in regard to expenditure, but reinventing their school image and lean into the rugby culture. Especially as it becomes more and more popular.
You raise a good point. I think Knox is so competitive in the younger age groups due to the school’s massive size — approximately 3,146 students across both campuses — which is around triple that of some CAS counterparts. As for Waverley and Barker, I think the attraction of strong 1st XV XV may draw young potential talents into the school through the junior years. More academic schools like Cranbrook and Aloys may not appeal as much to young rugby prospects. If Cranbrook can start posting better results and even win the competition a few times, I think its junior programs will grow in skill, as boys looking to thrive both academically and in rugby will be drawn to the Brook over rivaling, less academic CAS schools.

I also think Cranbrook’s 16s and opens teams are made up of a large number of scholarship players, which gives strength to their 16As and Opens teams — but the younger age groups still rely on much smaller boys to compete. You can’t really give a Year 7 kid a rugby scholarship, because by the time he reaches Year 12, he could be a completely different player and not as good as originally projected.

I completely agree with you there, scrumhalf; those weaker schools don't give that major appeal of rugby towards the rest of the non-rugby players. It then results in other sports such as soccer and AFL taking talent away from rugby. These weaker schools have to increase the appeal of rugby and get more boys playing.

Schools like cranbrook where there talent is spread across different sports meaning each sport is medicore and it is hard to specialise and thrive in 1 sport
