Sydney Subbies 2025

Here To Do

Herbert Moran (7)
Would like to see Subbies reconsider there finals structures in the 6 team comps. It’s already a race between 2 in most grades and the thought that someone could get lucky in a semi and knock out one of the big hitters. There’s 0 reward for finishing top of the table and could be straight out after one shot.
If we're being fair dinkum, a 6 team comp should only have a top 3:
* 2nd v 3rd in the Preliminary Final, 1st has the week off
* 1st v Prelim Winner in the Grand Final

If they want to do a top four, instead of the single-elimination semis they run now, I'd have used a McIntyre/Page final four as previous. 1st and 2nd get a second chance, with 3rd and 4th essentially having a play-off.

The only reason they're using straight semis, I believe, is down to the extra H/A round pushing things back a week - for me, this is even more reason to just push the minor premier into the Grand Final.

It’s not though is it? They won through the minor prelim and GF. It may have been an upset and not the best team but Newport did have a chance after they lost to Pats in Week 1.

What I’m talking about is a 1v4 & 2v3 format with winners going through to the GF. No second chance. I could understand your thoughts if it had of been like this last year.

If UNSW or Petersham go through undefeated and then say Briars or Forrest pip them in the semi is that just unlucky UNSW?
i misread, i stand corrected, i was more referring to the coming home with a wet sail.

Yeah I know why they are doing it, to fit the extra round in. It just has the potential to get messy. I agree with you on the top 3 only issue is with the wet weather the week before the finals you get 2 weeks off finishing 1st which some clubs may not want.

Yeah I wouldn't want the 2 weeks off so maybe you'd have to bring the WW week forward - top 3 is not ideal in the slightest but at least gives the team in 1st a benefit. McIntyre 4 is the way to go IMO but it is 3 weeks for a 4 team tournament, essentially.

Have just seen this also, definitely not a great format, although currently I can't see a situation where Beecroft or UNSW lose to the 4th ranked team as the gap is so large, feel free to bookmark this for September though!

I'm with the crowd on a 2v3 prelim to meet 1 in the GF.

How do they run finals in the Hunter comp and Canberra comp with 6 clubs? Had a quick look on xplorer and couldn't find what I was looking for. These are two well established comps with pretty high stakes so anticipate it has been given some thought.

Round three tips for Div 2

Briars Vs Forest
Forest got stuck into uni last week leading at halftime, but falling away late with uni scoring some lucky tries. I think they will be too strong this week. Briars will be in it until late but forest will get the chocolates. Forest 28-17

Irish Vs Pats
Both need another win to stay in touch with the playoffs, I think Irish grind this one home. Irish 17-12

Petersham Vs Uni
Petersham get the job done this week and give the students a massive wake up call. I think Petersham start fast and uni be won’t able to keep up. Shammies 35-29

What’s happened to St Pats higher grades this year? They look to be in the games but if they loose to Irish then we will be into the next cycle without a win (washout to Briars excluded).

They have had a good colts group the last few years. Like a lot of clubs has thus not come through into grade?

Canberra Comp runs the following
1 v 2 (Saturday)
3 v 4 (Sunday)

This provides the top two teams in the 6 team comp the best opportunity of going straight through to the final, without a one and done for the top sides.
Most winners have come from that 1 v 2 in recent times - Except potentially Queanbeyan in 2022.

I asked ChatGPT which ground had the best Fences,

One post even mentioned that Tantallon Oval has 159 fence posts and joked that promotion and relegation should be based on fence quality! There were also comments about Epping and St Pats having "terrible fences" while Lindfield was praised for having a great one.
Harsh on Epping - there is no fence! The old wire fence that has been falling apart for years at Hudson Park is deserving of the negative feedback.

Missed the fence chat. Good to have it back

Div 3 Round 5 Predictions:

LCOI @ Blacktown:
The only two winless teams do battle and to quote the great boxing idiom, someone's O has got to go. LCOI has gone against what is likely the 3 strongest teams in the comp so far and been competitive but ended up on the wrong side, whereas Blacktown has found it very tough sledding after two weeks in Division 3. I think Blacktown gives them a nervous crack at home if they can hold their discipline, but I'm backing the joint venture to get it done here and move to 1 win on the back of the Exner brothers in space out wide. LCOI by 8. I'll take Blacktown for a home upset in 2s, whilst the Colts game should be a belter, give me Old Barker at home by 3.

Hills @ Beecroft: 1 plays 2 in the game of the round here. Beecroft, ably steered around by the ever-classy Lachy Brooke at 10 and led up front by the dangerous and physical Luke Meehan, have looked in a class of their own in this division. Hills are top of the ladder by virtue of an extra game in hand and just got pipped on the bell by Knox at the Yat. Hills play well on the front foot but break down a fraction if you can get in their grill. I think Beecroft does just that and stamps themselves at $1.20 competition favourites. Beecroft by 10. Hills by 30 in 2s though, they're the heavyweights down there. I'll take the Crofties at home in Colts vs Colleagues II in a tight one.

Knox @ Hornsby: Was last week's Hornsby win a sign of them getting their season back on track or just punching down on Blacktown? We'll find out when they host Knox this week. Knox's Evans is one of the real strike players in the division but needs to hold his head in order for Knox to be great, hes firey. Fitzgerld at 10 is also electric with a boot for days, but he'll have his hands full with his opposite man, Hornsby's Hunter Bird who's been a standout. I think Hornsby has improved, but not enough to get up in this one. Knox by 12. I'll back Knox in 2s and Colts convincingly for what they seem to call a 'knobwash'.

Desperate for a dry track one of these days.

i cant speak for chat GPT on all these topics, however i know all props would prefer a 10 scrums, followed by a meat pie and beer drinking contest to decide all finals.

You might be surprised, next time your down at Somerville. Parramatta council has lovingly erected some of the finest temporary fencing around the entire oval and half the carpark.
