Finally uncovered the reason Makasini didn't play in the first round vs Riverview....he played in a City vs Country league schoolboys game earlier in the afternoon.

Was pretty well contained yesterday so that bodes well for Newington. He did put one massive hit on the Joeys no. 4.

Newington should hopefully welcome back their 2 starting props next week, Scheck and Viliamu who will only strengthen the team at scrum time and in carrying.

Big work for them this week will be kick restarts. Joeys caused them all sorts of issues, admittedly the Joeys 9 (I think) had an excellent ability to put up shallow but high restarts. But Newington will want to fix that aspect of their game.

The New crowd were definitely vocal and punched above their weight in terms of noise. The ref allowing play to continue with an injured player did cause some angst which got aimed , poorly IMHO, at the Joeys kicker. Although at Stanmore the weekend before there was certainly some vocal work undertaken by View's travelling support.

But should be better. The New Head of Sport did give the boys a talking to yesterday so hopefully will be the last of that.

But shouldn't detract from a great victory and a top start to the season.

I heard Henry Baxter at hooker for the Shore 1st 15 had a cracker of a game. 2 breathtaking try’s. That Baxter family is something different.

There seems to be a lot of talk about how good Baxter is going recently, is it the name or the player?
I watched him play for City last year against country and thought he was outplayed by the country hooker. I don’t think he made the Waratahs 16’s squad either.
I look forward to seeing him play this year to see what all the hype is about.

Do we think that Shore has what it takes to bring down Newington at Stanmore next Saturday?

With the potential return of Jai Callaghan bringing much-needed speed and skill, there’s a real sense they could get over Newington this weekend. His presence adds structure in defense and sharpness in transition, which complements the team’s recent shift toward more disciplined, well-organized play. They’ve shown a growing ability to control tempo and apply pressure through repeat sets against Scots (which they deserved the victory) something Newington tends to struggle against. If they can stay patient, win the middle, and unleash their attacking weapons at the right moments (Francis, jai) this could be the game that turns heads and proves their growth isn’t just talk.

To be fair I watched the ref stop the clock multiple times in the 1sts game due to incidents and injuries. I felt the time was about right in that game.

I can understand that. In the 2nds there was still time on the clock - like over 2 mins.... which I don't understand.

Interesting take. Did Callaghan play in round 1 when Shore was comfortably beaten by Joeys? Personally I struggle to see how a Newington side whos just put Riverview to the sword and beaten Joeys at the hill will lose to a winless Shore at Stanmore. With the return of Newingtons 2 strongest props as well they should be even more dominant in the scrum. Just my take, open to discussion.

Callaghan is yet to play this season. But the team is coming together. Had a rocky start but I see it being a close game this weekend.

“I started watching school boys rugby again recently, great to watch. Was watching Shore play at Scotts today and the Scotts clock on the scoreboard might need a service? I watched 4 games:

16a's - Shore in front when clock run down. Ref played an extra 5 odd minutes and Scotts scored on the death to win.

3rd's - Shore in front when clock ran down. Shore kicked the ball backwards and out thinking end of the game and ref played on for another 3 -4 minutes (apparently there was 2 seconds left when the ball went out). Scotts scored on the death but was 2 points short of a win.

At the end of this game a mum questioned why the clock ran down and several more plays were allowed in the game. A dad said 'the scoreboard clock keeps running and the ref's watch is what counts'. The ref was right in front of us during this conversation and he did not appear to have a watch?? But he somehow knew there were a few seconds left and yes, I understand that the game can often go longer than the scoreboard clock because of the ref can stop his watch for stoppage of play..

2nd's - Scotts in front with 3 minutes to full time (according to scoreboard clock). Ref called full time with 2.32 left on score board clock ... to give Scotts the win. I really don't understand how the scoreboard clock can still have time on it if it does not stop for play stoppage?

1st's - Shore in front when score board clock was frozen with 2.00 minutes left. I set my timer. Ref allowed another 6 minutes or so from then and Scotts was awarded a penalty in front of the goals - which they kicked and won the game by a point.

It felt like - Scotts behind, play overtime. Scotts in front, shut game down early. I expect the refs are independent (?) so not saying this is the case, but can anyone help explain this or is it just one of Rugby's mysteries.... like scrums.”

I was also there for the Scots v Shore 3rd, 2nd, and 1st XV games, and I must say @Try Line Vet is spot on here. Scoreboard struggles at Scots should be a huge focal point for their next home game; however, the referee is in control of the time, and that is that. Both teams had a terrific day out. Hats off to the Scots who, with a man down, managed to take home their first win of the season in front of the castle.

Does anyone know the type of action that is put in place past the red card for punching for Scots (suspension, etc)?

Ive watched New over the last 15 seasons and they always seem to stuggle against Shore, regardless of where each side sits on the ladder.

The short summary:

Both sides looked strong - I would almost venture to say that Shore was the stronger team, particularly in the engine room and on offense. Scots ball carriers didn't appear to be running particularly hard (Obviously this is from an outside perspective so take this with a grain of salt, but I noticed that when tackles connected some of the Scots boys seemed to slow a little), but a lack of commitment in contact and some lazy defense failed to capitalise on this. Scots defense seemed patchy - Some players performed some remarkable tackles, others seemed a little softer - but Shore's frequent errors (including a knock on count I would venture to say was in excess of 20) meant that any progress made quickly stalled, once again failing to capitalise on this weakness.

In set piece, Shore began as the dominant side, with both Belli (c), Perkins and Morrow (3, 2, 1 respectively) seeming to overpower the ostensibly larger Scots front row in the scrums. Lineouts were slightly weaker to begin with, and if I had to summarise it I would say that Shore was rigid in their calls, not responding to obvious defense setups, but overall the Shore lineout seemed strong. However, once the (many) subs began coming on, Shore's strength rapidly declining, with a seemingly weaker push in the scrums and messier lineouts. Scots' stayed fairly consistent in terms of substitutions and as a result were able to leverage Shore's weaknesses with consistently powerful scrums and effective lineouts. I have to pass on my admiration for Scots number 3 - he was about as circular as they come, built like a tandoori oven, but managed to stay on his toes and in the fight for the majority of the game, with some catastrophic runs hurtling into Shore's defense. Bravo.

The Shore backs were a bit more coherent this week, and appeared more courageous in defense than those of Scots, but the consistensy of Scots in various areas was what set them apart. Shore showed promise off the edges with good hands, but some poor decision making in decisive moments really affected their performance. Scots had fast hands which helped them work around Shore's defense, and a particularly shifty winger proved very difficult for Shore to defend against.

Ultimately, Shore's one unconverted try wasn't enough to balance out the countless unforced errors and lack of response to weaknesses in Scots' attack and defense. I've mentioned it several times, but I think one word that defines Scots' win is consistency. As I said, I don't think you could call one team definitively the stronger team, but Scots clearly wanted the win more and that's what got them the game. Very excited to see them matchup once more later in the season, it will be a very different game.

As much as I like agreeing with the criticisms on Scots, it's not entirely fair to say "I don't think you could call one team definitively the stronger team". Lets be real, the score was 28-5. That 11 played fiercely, I'll give him that, and while I do believe this Shore team has what it takes to beat them later on, Shore were outperformed on the weekend by a better team across the park.

kings vs view

The view boys showed up. grover was eceptional and controlled the game well as expected. kings look to have no direction, is there an option to move sawyer back to 10 and maybe broing someone to 15 for a bit more directions. feel as though sawye is wasted at the back. hasni the 3 was unreal on of his better games for awhile.

Way too early Power rankings:

1. Newington - only undefeated team after 2 rounds (shows how tight the comp will be), looked well drilled at the ruck as well as a strong set piece, along with a few players to come back from injury, will look to storm this competition 10 years on from their last.

2. Joeys - still second, was a very tough game against Newington only going down by 1 point. Also with a few players coming back soon should be a very strong team looking to push Newington.

3. Riverview - With the tight loss to Newington last week as well as beating Kings comfortably and troubling the Kings scrum. They are a dark horse to push in the second half of the season.

4. Kings - Although they suffered a tough loss to View, they have the players and skill to challenge any team on there day seen in both pre-season games against Newington.

5. Scots - Don't have much to say on Scots, they have some very skilled players like the Large brothers and big Heinz Lemoto, they did struggle to beat Shore. Again not much to say.

6. Shore - from Premiers last year to bottom of my rankings this year. Without Rex for half the season and Jai for who knows how long as well as all the year 12 talent from last year, I cant see them doing much until Rex and Jai are back.

So much can change in such a long season, when I come back to this at the end of the year, it will probably be laughable.

I do unfortunately disagree with the Shore report, as I have watched both games.
Shore looked strong considering, playing a close but losing game against Joeys.
They also looked very strong against Scot’s, demonstrating the power of their forwards, especially in dominant line outs and malls, in defence they would have spent 15+ minutes holding Scot’s out from literally on top of the try line. IMHO, separate from controversy and this isn’t a go at any rulings, Shore played the better game of football, believe it or not, without Rex or Jai.

Thus, I simply cannot support the idea that Shore is donezo without Rex and Jai. With Jai most likely back this week, he will only add to Shore as a threat. Aside: A concern is Charlie ‘Galtitude’ Galligan probably missing this round.

Also, as the ‘Premiers last year to bottom of my rankings’, perhaps we should wind back the clock and see how Shore started last season…

My rankings heading into the 3rd round

1. Newington: Undefeated. You’ve got to give it to the Stanmore men after taking out Joeys at the Hill. Enormous side. Can they keep the momentum.

2. Joeys: Very strong and nimble squad. Shades of youth, I believe one of there players is in year 10. Could contest New for the prem.

3. Scots: Insanely clutch victory against Shore, very unlucky loss against Kings. Looking to be a title contender.

4. Kings: Promising form against New in the trials and strong round 1 victory, not sure why they were soundly beaten by View yesterday

5. View: Soundly dispatched by New in the first game. Grover was lacking in round 1 but showed captains presence yesterday in their promising win.

6. Shore: Poor start to the season, perhaps without their key players they will fall back into old form. Hopefully they can turn things around.

Very disappointing performance from TKS team after a hard fought win over TSC the week prior. Really only a couple of shinning lights from the team. As has been the trend for them it was the forwards that kept them remotely in the game. Lavercombe, Smith, Perrett and Fonua played tough and when the ball was with those boys, it was the only time TKS looked like something could happen.
Credit where credit is due, the SIC boys played smart and Grover led his boys around the park well. They played smarter rugby and definitely knew those opponent. Dempsey also a standout for the View side from my perspective.

Ahh but you did just claim that Newington "brings in hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of players into the opens". Is that not a claim?
Moreover how could that be correct if 12 out of the first 15 were already at the school in year 7?
