Concussions and Protecting Our Players

Not to mention Geoff Parkes' observations in The Roar that the Melbourne event seemed to be held on astro-turfed concrete, which saw one participant receiving a double blow - tackle and head bounce.
I commented this a couple of pages back, but in one of their socials posts (and it might even have been what Geoff was referring to), you can see the astroturf is only about 1800 wide, with bare concrete either side.

Conveniently, the video was cropped to have old mate's head bouncing off said concrete juuuust out of frame...
Edit: seems like the post has disappeared :)

They need to be sued out of existence. Waivers don't save you from negligence.

Unfortunately in this instance many participants are happy to take the cash and could be afraid to take it further when it's a very insular group participating.

Really disappointing to see guys like Nadolo and Burgess help it get traction.

It will only bring more focus on both rugby codes as well

I've known Nem's for a while, more so back during his early rugby days in Brisbane and the Tahs, the bloke always seemed genuine,.

There does seem to be a bit of 'hustle vibe' from him recently though. Ever since he moved back to Oz last year and officially retired, he's associated himself with a few people I wouldn't exactly call good characters, and his social media gets a bit weird at times.

I feel like he should have really set himself up with all those years playing abroad so I was actually surprised to see him getting on board with this RUNIT stuff (who are clearly flicking him cash).

Voluntary assumption of risk..

Bit of devil’s advocate but if you could sue for the realisation of a risk you were clearly warned about and is inherent to the activity this country would be uninsurable.

He always seemed like a nice bloke with a good head on his shoulders and I'm not calling him anything for doing this stunt but it's just disappointing.

But, he very well could have done it naively and then thought wtf.

I think he's had ample time to remove all the social media by now if he was seriously doubting the organisation.

The wallet seems to be overruling the head at the moment.

I wonder if there is a bit of a general acceptance of these kinds of events from many in the rugby and league communities, both here and in NZ, because it's not that long ago we were doing similar things at training.

Hopefully everyone starts to see the error of our ways

I don't know where you were training but my coaches never laid out a strip of fabric on some concrete and asked me to run straight at the biggest guy in the team.

I take your point, but it wasn't that long ago before councils closed fields due to rain that it was fairly regular to train on fields with no grass to speak of, and you couldn't much tell the difference between the surface and concrete, as well as the places with the cricket pitch through the middle!

My comment was a bit of fun and I do agree with you.

In terms of the RUNIT concept being accepted here in Oz and NZ, I feel like there was definitely an element of 'this sounds cool' for the first couple of events but the feedback from a large number of spectators has been a massive backflip on that attitude. It is easy to build hype for an event when you only show 1 or 2 big hits on social media and everyone having a good time. Different story when you have to watch it happen 30 times and the damage it is causing.

The Oklahoma drill as they do the US is a bit different though and was meant to be specific to the O Line and D Line competing for space and positioning.

This is just human dog fighting.
