NSW AAGPS 2025 (banter and commentary)

I like the CAS ISA crossover initiative, will only improve their respective programs. Aside from Waverley I’d expect the ISA junior programs to run amok. Too big a standard deviation in both their home competitions.
Will always see kids from the ISA schools migrate to CAS/ GPS so it’ll always push the proverbial uphill.

I like the idea but it dosent really work, some schools who have outstanding 1st XV sides due to lack of depth in juniors will be playing in the second division.

this just is a waste for those boys, idea was there but hopefully I’m proved wrong

Schools like? I think it is quite even in the second division with Trinity and Pius to be a very good game in the first, but I do agree with you that some teams do get either boosted up in the rankings by their juniors or seniors, and sometimes become an inaccurate placing. Knox, for example, their seniors have saved them while there junior teams were struggling heavily in CAS, now going into the junior teams in the likes of Auggies and Oakhill.Perhaps they could possibly do a junior and senior table which could maybe even it out.

Yeah good point but I don’t know there is a solution regardless. No schools will match up perfectly in depth but there will be some serious mismatches, particularly in the juniors. Good luck to the sports masters trying to find everyone a game. Kinross Wolaroi and AllSaints Scots have a good approach where they’ve generally joined and added depth to their individual programs with only two teams per age group becoming four but that level of collaboration is unusual and still won’t pair off for depth against the bigger schools. Those two schools have three alumni playing firsts for various GPS schools this season that I’m aware of demonstrating some talent out there.

Hopefully the result this year will help GPS selectors do a better job next year.

GPS 1 - ALL WRONG Don’t know where to start
GPS 2 - a conversion won the game for CAS how do you lose when you were 2 tries up?

I don’t mind losing if it was fair and square.
The more I write the more of a sore loser I sound tbh lol

WELL DONE CAS
WAKE THE F UP GPS SELECTORS

let’s be honest, GPS selections are a horse trading activity. most junior selections are. Look at the Sydney U18 selections this year, very wrong and the results they achieved demonstrate that.

Ouch…

They aren’t a bad side either they beat both NZ and ARG in the U20 RC
yes they did win some games but the players in this version of the SA team were playing pro rugby in the URC against men at the time. Pathways, Pathways, we stick ours in cotton wool and call them PONI’s, they send theirs out to prove themselves against men. These are the results.

seriously, poor excuse. the GPS could have picked a team to win but picking on rep rather than form is a sad Australian rugby tradition.
Thats rugby as whole, lets pick players on a reputation they developed as a 13/14 year old and guide them through a pathway despite other great kids being better than them. Take a look at the 20's this morning.

Rb,

I think it's a bit early to say it doesn't really work, it hasn't started yet!

Remember this is year 1, so it's quite understandable that mismatches will occur, particularly in the juniors.
But the whole strategy is to improve the overall quality of all the schools involved over time.
If schools wish to make no improvements and continue to perform poorly , they will be relegated to div 2, likewise for those who perform well, up to div 1.

Some CAS schools like Trinity and Cranbrook have been making some real steps to improve their programs over the last few years, so this new comp may throw more fuel on the fire, it will certainly highlight their relative standing across more than just 1 comp, across all ages.

In addition it allows all these schools to take part in, what should be, a terrific 2nd comp other than just their own association.
If you believe more competition drives a better level of performance, then this may/should address this belief.

Clearly these are all motherhood statements at this stage, but let's see what happens, my money is on a real improvement, for a number of schools, over all the age groups, and the beginning of a brilliant new comp that will spark on going interest for years to come.

What say the!

odd game, for the first part we actually looked solid but by the end of the second half the flood gates opened.

to make matters worse I think Fakafunu will be out for the tournament due to injury.
Fakaunu will be missed. many oddities about the game. also interesting that the SA coach Kevin Foote was head coach at the Rebels. Australian development dollars at work yet again.

Think there are going to be some cracking games in both divisions this year.
The only real question is how flexible the system is as the schools change.

Certainly this year I think Trinity would be compatible in Red / Div 1 if you put 4 CAS schools through.

Same with GPS. The two-round system has worked very well the last few years, particularly as Shore has improved, but that's no guarantee that the system will work forever.
Newington going co-ed might change their focus (or boys might prefer mixed netball to rugby), and equally what appears to be a growing s-word arms race might negatively impact others.

yes Probbaly to early to assume, just worried about some lower teams forced to match up against amazing sides due to school results!

however it’s sport and these boys will definitely grow from it…. Is their a trophy involved at all?

Not sure about a trophy, you would think something of the sort. The results will be the real reward.
