Then don’t name Wilson, name someone else. But name someone. At this point he hasn’t given anyone confidence to lead this team and it’s coming off as if he doesn’t think any of them are good enough leaders

You were saying the same things last year. Need a new script mate. Joe has stated his reasoning. The team knows the score and what you think about it doesn't really matter.

Well, I think he wants Gordon as Captain, but his still under a cloud, and I think he thinks that as his picking Valetini at 8 and probably Hooper/Williams at 6 with Skelton.. but can't do that as Gordon's injured and Valetini too.. but that's how I think his leaning. So his picking no one and waiting. I'd say give it to 7As (Allan Ala'alatoa) and move on

Good to know I’m consistent. I stand by the fact it’s a bad decision to not make a captain and no top National team does it. Even the Lions named a captain when they named the squad

And I’m sure you’ll dislike this post like you always do

You can still name him a captain if he’s under an injury cloud. Scott Barrett is still the All Black captain despite being injured

Pretty much reflects my opinion of your constant negativity pretty succinctly without all the trouble typing it out. No wonder you're sticking up for that hack Doran.

Probably not as easy if it sounds with Gordon under an injury cloud. I’m sure Ala'alatoa would get consideration but I get why front rowers aren’t ideal and I can also see he may consider starting Tupou and finishing with Ala'alatoa.

Porecki - injury cloud, may not start and same deal as Ala'alatoa
Slipper - as above
Skelton - not always available
Williams - not tarter
Frost - can’t see it, possibly not gauranteed starter
McReight - maybe
Valetini - injury cloud & doesn’t strike me as likely
McDermott - probably not a starter if Gordon is fit
Ikitau - maybe
Wright - too far from the action and let’s let him focus on playing well
The rest are either to new or too unsure of their position (and are backs - so points off for that).

I’d hope he’s at least keeping Wilson informed of the thought process as he is the one it has the most chance of impacting mentally. Otherwise I can’t imagine it’s a big issue within the playing group. And for us it’s really a ‘nice to know’ rather than ‘must know’.
If it’s such a non issue, why does no other team run like this?

As opposed to your constant groupthink? What’s the point of this forum if no one is allowed a different opinion?

I’m sticking up for his right to say it. Feel free to disagree with it but it’s an opinion piece that has created a lot of passion and interest which is what rugby needs right now. Fan is short for fanatic after all

So we're happy going down the league journalistic path of appealing to the lowest common denominator and creating controversies to keep relevant?
That's a slippery slope.
You don't have to be happy about it, but this is how news works. There's nothing any of us can do about it. More clicks, more engagement, more money.

Not sure why you think it's a league path, it's a popular sport path.

Clearly JOC (James O'Connor) is no where near ready for the physicality of a Lions test. This never would have happened if he was in the squad earlier.

I actually think he makes some fair points. In other football codes this type of critique is common, but in Rugby in AU there's such a small band of journos that they're scared to upset anybody and be black-listed. Ready to be shouted down as a Doran apologist, but what has he actually got wrong here?

Because most times the situation is different. There is either an established captain or there is someone who is an easy pick.

I really doubt the players think it’s a big deal and so I don’t feel it should be for the rest of us - you appear think differently. Happy to agree to disagree.

This is genuinely insufferable dribble. The latest in Doran's (and Roar's, really) bizarre shift over the past few years from providing typically valuable and substantiated reporting towards self-flagellating, tabloidal garbage more at home in a NewsCorp rag. Nice to see some of the Roar posters giving him heaps in the comments.

Vale quality rugby journalism in this country.
He even called for Joe to step down following the series if Lions dominate

On the captaincy situation, could just be overthinking it. Wilson was captain last year, captain against Fiji and is probably captain now he just doesn’t see the need to name him until he names the first test team in a few days.
I don’t think he will suddenly inject Skelton into the starting lineup now, possibly put him and Hooper on the bench together and come on after 50/60 for Williams and Wilson.
