"I would have made the assumption that a strong 1XV team equals a quality Rugby program but this appears to be anything but the case"

Too true. Barker, Knox, Waverley, Newington, Scots, Kings - their 'programs' are recruitment fuelled.

No ISA school offers scholarships, and yet Auggies and Oakhill have great strength across all ages. And Saturday sport at Oakhill isn't even compulsory.

I suspect this cross over 'comp' is going to be a one off based on the lack of respect CAS schools have paid to playing ISA head to head.
I hope you're wrong with this OSR. But I wouldn't be surprised if thats the case.

OSR, I think you will find that all the CAS schools use a level of recruitment, except Aloys, and same for the GPS, maybe not View.
However recruitment alone doesn’t guarantee winning, the Rugby DNA of some schools is just stronger, best example Joeys.

I applaud the ISA schools for their approach but remember the catchments of some schools like Auggies and Oakhill is way larger than any of the GPS or CAS schools, so you would expect strong depth. Also, I would suggest these 2 ISA schools also have strong Rugby/League DNA.

It will be interesting to see what the post-mortem delivers. You would like to think an agreement is reached to have all “like” teams play each other, just like they do in their respective comps.

Interesting that you mention not Riverview. They most certainly do also, I was made aware of a case only days ago. It is a widespread practice.

This seems to be very rapid Mule.

I'd ask ther question though - are academics and sport mutually exclusive? Isn't it possible to have both?
very possible to have both, but when you've got too much volume of one/both, the results suffer - in the Knox case, IMHO there's way too many sports on offer (25 choices in both seasons!!), spreading the talent (both players and coaches) very thinly....

Yes agreed to that.

Have just seen that Pats are now only running 2nds and A grade games on Breen Oval. All other fixtures cancelled.

EDIT - And Oakhill only doing 15a, 16a, 3XV, 2XV and 1XV. They've cancelled the non Knox games in the 14a and 13a

To quantify that, even if all students in a year group comply with compulsory sport, it works out at 375 kids / 25 sports each season = 15 kids per age group per choice ….. Rugby actually outperforms at 3-5x depending on the year group, but with the focus/prestige of the sport having been dialled down over the years / doesn’t get the special treatment of yesteryear, overall rugby is much weaker which is objectively seen through the results.

Very poor from the cas schools. Especially from barker who do put 50 points on in 1s but wouldn’t allow that to happen in say 15a. Either way I enjoy the new competition but I do think there should be rule changes around pulling teams. Augustine’s v Waverley would have been the best matches throughout both programs, shame the rain says otherwise. Looking forward too, im assuming the decider Barker v Augustine’s???
