Rugby Championship 2025: South Africa v Australia

Uh huh

Tom Lawton (22)
Does anyone know how Lennie came back on? I thought he went off with a knee complaint. Unless it was a HIA.
- Valetini to sub for Wilson.
- Toole to finally come in for Pietch or they could start Kellaway but he seems pretty useful off the bench. I would like Daugunu but I think he's still on leave with the arrival of his baby.
- Ikitua maybe a swap with Paisami if he struggles to back up.
It looked to me like the knee injury was an impact laceration. He went off for blood and probably got a load of stitches and superglue on it.

IMO JOC (James O'Connor) (James O'Connor) has taken over the No 1 ranking for the No10 spot. Not one of the group who has featured in that spot in the past two years has attacked the line like O'Connor. In this test we actually had some backline flair in attack and were able to put the Bokke defence under pressure. At least in the second half.
Ahead of Meredith??

Watching a replay, good to see our rushed defence has been maintained. Even before the momentum turned we shut down a great opportunity of theirs Sua'ali'i and Ikitau both flying up quick. There were other promising signs as well. Pietsch stole a ball back from our kick off. Really good kicks in behind which were super close to tries. Definitely wasn't all one way traffic.

Ahead of Meredith??
I think Meredith is better than each of Lynagh, Donaldson, Lolesio and Edmed. Just hasn't had opportunities to play his own game at Super Rugby. Has some of the skills shown by JOC (James O'Connor) this morning, notably a short kicking game, longer touch finders and better running game, but JOC (James O'Connor) has it all over him, and the others, for big game experience. Right now JOC (James O'Connor) is our best option but given chances in Super Rugby next year I am confident Meredith will demonstrate a higher level of skill than the currently more favoured options.

On the kickoffs, something I noticed was that they mixed it up once they realised something wasn't working. From memory, the first couple of kickoffs were deep to a set forward, and SA punished us with a good set and contestable box kick. The Wallabies then ran with a shallower kickoff on the other side, which brought Pietsch into play. I feel like previous Wallaby sides wouldn't have made that adjustment, or would have made it too late.

While Meredith has shown a glimpse of some good games, I hardly think he is better than our Wallaby 10's. I'll be interested to see how many more games JOC (James O'Connor) plays with Wallabies before returning to Leicester? I'm guessing Lynagh, Donaldson and Edmed on Spring Tour? JOC (James O'Connor) might get some Tests next year possibly depending on his contract. Meredith and Edmed's battle for the Brumbies 10 jersey will be interesting next year. The more games these blokes play the better they will get and hopefully we have 3 guns for the home World Cup to choose from. Noah may come back a better player too?

I think Finn Mackay is better than Meredith just hasn't had the opportunities yet at Super Rugby level.
We're going off vibes and unrealized potential rather than data yeah?

From. Bok perspective, five things for me that stand out in terms of letting the Wallabies back into the game:
1. How many times did Kriel rush in only for a pass to be floated over his head? It was a tactic but falls squarely on the coached. He kept doing it.
2. Boks got looser and looser. Seemed to think they could just score at will. Then when they ent behind they tired to run everything. Pollard on at this point would have been very different picture.
3. Many squandered try opportunities though poor finishing and lack of discipline.
4. Fitness was questionable.
5. Bomb squad in name but not in the personnel needed. Bomb the whole bomb squad.

Really did feel like they could score at will. They were making huge metres easily when they weren't playing silly buggers. Similarly to the Lions the Wallabies had no response for their big men except for miracle turnovers from Hooper and McReight.

The more Len and JS play together the better as well with it likely they are a pairing at the WC all going well. May shift at Super Rugby but these are valuable mins given they play at different franchises.

Makes Lynaghs injury suck even more. Having those 3 get games would have been great when they all play separately for most of the year.
If JS wasn't on a huge contract and the face of the game, I think Flook at 13 would be better come world cup time. JS on a wing

As a Reds fan I am comfortable with some of the criticisms aimed at Wilson. I even called for his replacement after the first Lion’s test.

In saying that, you have to also acknowledge his good points. It’s clear he is a good captain but more than that, it’s not a coincidence that he scores those tries. His link play and positioning is his calling card. As Wallabies fans we have been desperately in need of a player like him who can turn a 10m break into a 20m one since fucking Eales TBH.

If you think it’s luck that gets him those scores and stats then you probably also believe Mars being in retrograde is affecting your life and I would like to sell you some seafront property in Canberra.

Kellaway brought some real positional nous on to the field - think he had a fair bit to do with the improvement in defence in the wider channels. Hard to say if thats best brought on or started with!

Vannek (Slipper) and Daugunu (Pietsch) flying out. I'm assuming Wilson out (knee) and Ikitau in (coz he came back on)

For me.

1. Bell 2. Pollard 3. Thor
4. Frost 5. Skelton
6. Hoops 8. Valetini 7. Mcreight
9. White 10. JOC (James O'Connor) 11. Kellaway 12. Ikitau 13. Sualii 14. Jorgo 15. Wright

16. BPA 17. Ross 18. Nonggoor 19. Williams 20. Gleeson 21. Mcdermott 22. Edmed 23. Daugunu

If Wilson is good - I'd consider a 6/2 split again with Hoops on the pine. (LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) will get his shot if Skelton goes back to france after capetown)

After a very shaky start by both he and Wright they really came into their own as the game went on.
I think altitude had a bit to do with this - yes, they had all week training for it but with the speed and intensity of the opening stanza the ball movement would have been at a level they aren't used to under match conditions. Then they got used to it a bit, combined with the speed of the game settling.
