League Targets

Let glitzy Racing 92 waste millions on him and he can keep Tupou in line and away from the royals with cheese.

Under Armour are very much a global company..
I know it's not a like for like comparison but rugby union stars and clubs in the NH have larger social media followings than NRL players. Walsh has the most with 500k+ followers, they even claim SBW as the most followed with 1m+ and you can guess why he has so many. Ntamack, Dupont, Kolisi, Quade, Farrell all have more followers than any league player.

Any side deals Mark gets offered here can definitely be matched up north and then some. SOO had 4m watchers, the T14 final had 5m watchers and that's just their domestic comp.
But the money Under Armour is likely to use in those markets isn't going to be on an Australian playing Rugby there and someone locals will know. Off track now anyway. I hope they nab him so he is selectable for Aus.

It's an interesting discussion, NRL has deep saturation of a very lucrative market but with a very hard ceiling. It'll never reach outside Aus. Dupont for example on the other hand is a genuine household name across France, even outside of union. Unfair comparison I know because Dupont is unique and plays for their national team but he has the 65 million household name in France + name recognition of rugby fans from another ~6 union countries.

I concede it would be easier for Mark to become marketable in Australia too. Not sure if any Australian players who have gone overseas command much advertising recognition without playing for a national team (i.e., Mack and Sione). Maybe Will Skelton, Cooper and Giteau back in the day. But Jack Maddocks and Alex Newsome aren't attracting much attention.

Mark would need to go to a top 6 side and have an impact similar to Penaud or Wainiqolo which he could do.

After he's played for the Kangaroos juggernaut he could potentially go full SBW and give basketball a crack, or even try Formula One.

Back to Rugby for the RWC and then dedicate himself to getting a medal in indoor Volleyball at the Brisbane Olympics since Aus get a team in everything and he would surely walk into that side.

No disrespect to the fellas playing that but one of you is making way for Mark.

I can see QC (Quade Cooper) putting Marky Mark (Nawaqanitawase) away with the perfect pass on front of a packed stadium....except it's flag football

Cameron Munster eh. It feels like RA have conceded that the only way we are going to have the requisite world class #10 for RWC27 is to buy one. I’m not opposed to the concept for this cycle, is he the right one though?

Are we really in this market?

His current contract, which expires at the end of the 2027 season, earns him around $1.15 million per-season.

Munster knocked back a mammoth $6 million, four-year deal to become the Dolphins’ marquee signing in 2023, but eventually took a lesser salary to remain at the Storm.

I also think a guy like Munsters skill set more suited to playing 12 in Rugby as most Rugby fans would hate his ability to go 1v1 more often than not at 10 and then leave a backline without a 10. League with 2 main playmakers lets the individual attack knowing someone else slots in.

He is a world class talent though. Perth Bears are going to offer him at least 1m with what is likely to be 4 year deal. 4m+ once your past the 30yr mark is pretty good.

Also have to take into account he's captaining QLD in SOO and a likely candidate to Captain Aus in at least some games.

we have no money at the moment. We have no debt, sure, but we have no money. They are cutting costs big time (including womens XVs and Mens 7s) to make a sustainable model. The RWC money will be invested with dividends for operations. Until then we are still skint.

Can't imagine we are chasing anyone - but the Giteau law amendment is probably our strategy to cope with this. Let others pay for the big names, and we'll pick them for the Wallabies when we want. It seems a move towards the football model.

Unless its money from a 3rd party.

Surely the most obvious answer is to bring back Carter Gordon if he's interested - even if it requires offering the Titans a little compensation to let him go.

Though if Nathan Cleary was really keen and Penrith were willing to let him go early then he might be worth a huge offer, especially as he'd be worth about 3 Sua'ali'i's in terms of publicity and interest. Plus he's 4 years younger than Munster and his game style seems more suited. But if either of these guys were to come over I think it'd have to be starting next season to be a realistic chance of becoming a world class 10 in time for the world cup.

Just keep in mind the NRL free agency period starts on the 1st Nov (Officially). With the GF having just been played we are about to just read 3 weeks of agent tree shaking.

If we are going to do this who would be your top 3 candidates GOR?
I'd have a couple rules with any of them when we are hoping for effect by 2027.

1. A glaring weakness in the Wallbies
2. History playing Rugby. Can be overlooked somewhat for glaring weakness
3. Realistic about price. Watch the U18s and realise we need money for these kids. Cleary would cost 2m to come over.

1. Isaiah Katoa - I think he'd be the best 10 in Aus Rugby immediately. I honestly think his comparison is Richie Mo'unga
2. Kaeo Weekes - Tom Wright 2.0
3. Will Penisini - We lack genuine Centre depth
4. Ethan Strange - Goes against my rules but the violence this guy runs with he could play 10 or 12. Kicking would be an issue potentially but a world class centre without a doubt.
5. Tom Dearden

Unrealistic targets:
1. Nathan Cleary
2. Mitch Moses - Think he'd actually be better than Clearly for some reason. Little bit more of a runner in him
3. Stepehen Crichton - Too expensive now but could be the best back in either code soon. Athletic freak

Katoa is better
