Hawko, I believe Foley has received a two-year contract already.

Yes but its not clear whether that is a two years full, one year rookie and one year full or two years rookie contract. The journalists who write this stuff don't seem to know what questions to ask.

Steady on - we are talking about the Tahs. It's the weekend now and they will think about putting it up on Monday. Mark my words it will be there by Wednesday.

Less smart-arsely, maybe the contract hasn't actually been signed yet and they are observing the protocols though there is no such constraint on announcing the Foley contract, impending or not, since he has no ties with another Super outfit.

It didn't seem strange seeing Rocky play for Leinster but on that one occasion he played for the the Brumbies it was like seeing a stranger in a strange land, or a cow playing the piano. Good to see him coming back to where he belongs.

I'd have him a skipper as I mentioned earlier.

Rocky hasn't said so; I suspect we'll only know after the WC.

Not yet, I reckon he won't put pen to paper to October/November - he actually has other things to do til then

Rocky Elsom says Tah very much - Wallabies star close to signing two year deal with NSW

ROCKY Elsom may have been stripped of the Wallabies captaincy but he could well be leading the Waratahs next season.

The back-rower is expected to sign a two-year deal to rejoin NSW after Australia's World Cup opener on Sunday. Elsom will be a consideration for the Waratahs captaincy following the retirement of long-serving skipper Phil Waugh at the end of last season.

Lock Dean Mumm had been earmarked for the role and took over from Waugh when the flanker was injured through the 2011 Super Rugby season, and is still a strong candidate.

It is up to new coach Michael Foley to appoint the new captain for 2012, and it will be one of his most crucial decisions after taking over from the outgoing Chris Hickey.

Elsom decided to leave the Brumbies midway through a disappointing year but talks with NSW broke down during the season.

Foley re-ignited negotiations after taking over and is days away from landing his man.

Doesn't look like he has signed here.

I have just seen that the Tahs website has updated its players for 2012.
No sign of Adam Ashley Cooper! But we can see Pretoris, Foley and Petersen.

They must still be putting his bio together. Meanwhile the Fox commentators mentioned during the Italy game that Rocky had signed.

Now I am totally confused:
  1. AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) is up on the website, smiling in his wallaby jumper.
  2. Axel Foley said that there were still places for a front-rower, backrower and outside back not yet filled. This was after Bernard Foley's signing was announced.
  3. Both Bernard Foley and Peterson are up on the site as fully-contracted squad members.
  4. Timani has been deleted from the site despite the reports he was coming back from Japan to play in March. He's been given Wallaby status, which assumes he is playing domestically, but if not for the tahs, where else?
  5. There are 28 names listed, which seems to only leave room for Elsom and Timani, but what do we make then of Foley's comments?
If Timani is out and Peterson has a full contract then we are suudenly much weaker at lock than I thought we were. Vickerman is getting on and naturally recovers slower, Peterson is having a full shoulder reconstruction after the U20's and these do not always go as well as knee reconstructions. He is unlikely to get a full pre-season in and yet as a first year player he desperately needs it. If Douglas extends his second year syndrome into third year we are suddenly in big trouble. The only hope might be Ducker recovering from Crones.

If Bernard Foley is in the main squad then the backs division is full. That being the case we are very short of outside backs. The 22 is very strong but as soon as injury strikes we are suddenly looking very short-on.

The front row is quite unproven at this level once you get past Robinson, TPN and Kepu.

We require a good rugby journalist from the mainstream media, who understands how the contract system is supposed to work, to ask those questions of the Tah management that would clarify this. I won't hold my breath, all the rugby journalists appear to be on junket in New Zealand writing fluff pieces and analysis that even I would be ashamed of.

I don't think that Zipper is an outside back these days speckie. Even in his last year at school he was getting smoked sometimes. He is playing 12 for Eastern Suburbs at the minute and pretty well too. That is probably his position now, however he could get a spot as a utility because he has played on the wing and 13 in Super rugby before.

There are a few promising young outside backs in Sydney but if was picking one to be ready to go if there are a couple of injuries, I would pick Ben Batger or Sean Foley.

People may turn up their noses up at fullback Batger because he has had chances at the Tahs and the Brumbies before, but he has been in top form for Eastwood who have lost only one game this year, and he was in the same form last year too. The Tahs took him to the RSA in 2011 even though he was not contracted, and he got on the park. His goal kicking hasn't been the worst this year either when the main kicker has been off the field.

Sean Foley (no relation to Bernard Foley) who has played on the big stage for Oz 7s and plays wing or fullback for Randwick, looks in pretty good form too. He is a mature player and will be ready to go fairly quickly, like Batger.

As for youngsters: Jake Woodhouse has been in the pro academy for a couple of years and looks handy when I've seen him for Manly, mostly in highlights, and his team mate BJ Hartman looks very good and is versatilte.

I see that 10. Ben Seymour (playing 15 recently for Manly with Ripia back) who is in the Tahs pro academy, is not wanted by the Tahs for 2012. The 21 y.o. would be a good pick up though he may have to wait a year or two.
