anyone shed any light on the rumour that NSW will play QLD again today when QLD & ACT square off in 15s & 17s? Al the action is supposed to be at Woollahra.

Thanks CASA - now that's just a mockery of the system - we bang on about the lack of selecting skills - looks like that lack is directly proportional to the lack of organizational & planning skills somewhere in the system!

Thought that today was ACT vs QLD - hot on the heels of 4 intense games during the week, and NSWJRU Vs QLD yesterday, what irresponsible Einstein put that schedule together!

It is my belief, young leaguies signed to scholarships/contracts get between $5k and $8k per year (depending on the rep honours acheived), at least at the Harold Matts level. Newbie would know more.

I heard that the side that was to play Queensland today pulled out and Jamo Clarke put a side together so that they had at least some opposition. Don't know that it was an all Merrylands side though but more a composite team of players available to play today.

Thats right, Merrylands could not get their side together at short notice, so a team was put together consisting of a few Merrylands, Cantebury, Coogee and a couple of other clubs. They went pretty well considering they put together via text at about 830pm last night. They got better as they game went on and probably could have got some continuity if the halves were a decent length. I think it was 31 to 19 in the end (that could be wrong). Very much a cobbled together team to give QLD a run.

Since when does a 15 yr old boy (albeit a very talented player) get invited to organise an invitational team to play a visiting interstate squad?

There was not a game cancelled – their never was an U16 fixture scheduled between ACT & QLD. The replacement game WAS put together on zero notice because of ineptitude on the part of one or more of ACT, NSW or Qld Junior rugby!

That said - well done to WHOEVER for getting something together!

Milne does not have the ability to effectively cope with this at this stage in his developement. It was obvious from the first trial of these problems yet the coaches played him anyway. I said it before and I'll say it again. The schools team would have been infinetly better off with Tepai at 12, AK (Andrew Kellaway) at 13 and either Cochrane or Delore at 15.

Good to see that someone else thinks Kellaway is better placed at 13. Putting Tepai aside for the moment I think that those inside Kellaway in the Schools team should have been Davis (9), Deegan (10) and Tulloch (12) but then again for some unfathomable reason Tulloch didn't get picked in the Schools team. Noticed also that during the week Country played him at 15 when 10 or 12 are clearly his best positions.

Whilst the Schools backs defence was poor, as I expressed in an earlier post I thought that the Schools front three and their bench replacements were very dissappointing, particularly their workrates around the paddock. They certainly missed Jarrod Matairavula not playing and whilst I'm a huge fan of Matt Sandell I've seen him have much better Carnivals. I'm sure that given a second chance to choose their 4 props/2 hookers combinbation that Schools may have been turning to a couple of other players.

As for Tepai, at the risk of getting absolutely howled down, does anyone see him ever making a move to no 8? Would love to see his size and skills put to more constant use in closer.

I think that you may find that those most responsible were Jamo and his mum.

I agree. It was a huge ask of the teams - I understand a proposal to have the three age classified NSW teams to play Qld prior to Aust Vs NZ (next week at Knox) didn't get up because Qld had already organised their travel.

Would have a been great day of rugby! And allowed the teams some time to get over the niggling injuries sustained during the week and never really getting time to get over them.

Perhaps will get factored in next time???

I agree wholeheartedly. Seems there was a proposal to have all of the NSW vs Qld games prior to Aust Vs NZ next week. Didn't get up as Qld had already arranged travel etc. Would have been of great assistance to the players who have been carrying niggling injuries all week. Six games in seven days not good for anyone.

Seems we expect more from the younger lads - all the participants of the open Nationals this year were told to do nothing the week after their games- when they played their four games in five days.

I best give up on this topic now as I too am now digressing, and heaven forbid should I incur the wrath of the moderator who has the name of 'JUXTAPOSED AMERICAN CIVIL WAR GENERALS' ... LMAO!!

Late Developing Rugby Players - Don't give up on any kid playing Rugby.

Thought provoking article.

This bit caught my eye, and supports much of the Jarse philosophy

This certainty about how to play the game underpins the development structures of Canterbury rugby. It may be homogeneous, with training systems drip-fed down from Super rugby to schoolboy level, but it's also cutting edge. When everyone is on the same page it makes it easier for people to commit. And rugby "down here" is all about commitment.

"We've got 53 former students playing professional rugby and half of them started in our under-14 'b's or below," says Dods.

"Colin Slade started in our under-14 'c' team. Owen Franks started under-14 'b's. At that age they just weren't X-factor players, but the system here allows boys to develop at different rates, and then make the 1st XV when they're ready. We really put a lot of emphasis on our 'c' and 'd' teams because we can't afford to miss the gems that come out of them."

The other bit about the article that caught my eye is how many top shelf #10's have come out of Christchurch Boys High School.

In recent years the CBHS No10 jersey has been worn by Andrew Mehrtens, Aaron Mauger, Daniel Carter and Stephen Brett, all sophisticated, goal-kicking playmakers with time on the ball.

Last year's NZ under-20s captain, Tyler Bleyendaal, and Fletcher Smith, the 16-year-old CBHS incumbent, look set to continue the school's output of high-class first fives ....

Probs not the right thread to post this article but couldn't seem to find another "good fit".

I reckon its the perfect fit: not many of our players are permitted the luxury of later development. The Quade Cooper's and K Beale attract all the attention at the under age tournaments.

As a matter of interest: how many wallabies have been produced by the u16s - not that that is the test

I'm fairly sure that nearly everyone in this forum recognises that the overwhelming majority of what will be the next generation of Wallabies are not mentioned in these pages. In saying that, history also tells us a fair percentage of truelly talented juniors will fulfil their potential and become elite players also.

Here's my attempt at a team of the tournament.

1. Robert Lawless - Qld Whites
A smokey because he was a reserve for the Whites, but he shifted people around whether they had the ball, he had the ball, or nobody had the ball.

The Qld White Prop was actually Benroy Sala. He had swapped jerseys with hooker Rob Lawless before the first game due to sizing so he wore no#17 instead of no# 16

Thanks for that. I didn't know the lad and thought the names against the numbers in the programme were right.

Know for certain after conversations with the broncos football people that 10 Paai'aua and 15 Placid are broncos boys.

It will be a relief to the Foxtel rugby union commentators that the first-named player will be playing the other code. The ground announcer at Riverview struggled a bit.

It's a pity we couldn't keep them. These lads would have been great in our code.
