If Subbies clubs have the money to pay players I cant see that voluntary agreements not to will work for long: they havent in any other sport.
Tennis = shoe money
Rugby = boot money

The support for Suburban Rugby is fantastic but 10 team comps are too hard. The reason why so many clubs collapse at the end of the year is because they don't have the money to maintain the numbers after injuries. 8 team comps would allow for a shorter season or more breaks and would provide a more even distribution of teams across the divisions.

Personally I would be happy with Rugby being played 12 months a year but the body would not and I know very few in Suburban ranks that could.

I agree that a ten team comp might be a bit tough to support. Thats why we need Div 4! We need to support the likes of St George, and get them to grow. I know they had a tough time of it when they were in Div 3 and needed 4 teams. However we should be pushing clubs like Merrylands and Harlequins up into Div 3 to make the comp stronger!!!!

So who are the new clubs and which have folded (from 6th Div) I hope none have from 5th div but it has happened, Blakehurst.
And out of interest, anyone know what happened to Bronte SLSC club after several very successful seasons, did they morph into Clovelly?

Any Knox Old boys out there?

Why are you guys still playing at Bara Brui? Has to be the worst oval in the whole comp! Surely you could get Loffberg Oval????

Why did Blakehurst fold?????

KOB played at Loffberg in the 90s for a season: they thought that they lost their home ground advantage by playing away from the Sh**hole.

Don't know Blakehurst's story

Knox moved to Koola Park but Council is redeveloping this year so they're back to Barra Brui. Lofberg was being redeveloped for the last 2 seasons and is home to Killara West Pymble.

Finding ovals in that part of the world is nigh on impossible. Within Kuringai is Knox Old Boys, BOBS, Lindfield, Roseville, Brothers and Killara West Pymble. Throw in all the associated Junior Clubs plus Wahroonga and then all the Soccer Clubs (not unique to Kuringai) and it's hard to swing a cat without hitting a rugby club. Barra Brui might be a dodgy field, but at least they have one.

That's the price you pay for living in very solid liberal electorates, having a massive baby boom in the 90's, and building medium density up the highway.

Haha this is so true! Bobs now have a soccer field running across our rugby field, means we end up with a cows paddock by the end of the year!

What are they doing to Koola Park? Big upgrades?

Is all of Koola out of action - that would translate to something like 600-800 games of rugby and football being scheduled elsewhere. Lindfield Oval will be turned to concrete if any wet weather early in season :-(

Did a bit of hunting around. Koola Park is set for massive upgrades. They are putting in a new oval, relocating cricket pitches and nets and huge underground drainage system.

The area badly needs more fields!!!!

Drainage system? Sure it wasn't top notch but drained a hell of a lot better that most other ovals in the area. It was the best rugby field in the district IMO, good grass coverage, full size (huge), and open most weekends. We tried to get flood lights there 8-10 years ago but usual bureaucratic issues interferred. Who is funding this project - Ku-Ring-Gai Council?

You can find all the info here: http://www.kmc.nsw.gov.au/resources/documents/koola_park_5Apr2011GB.04.pdf

Sounds like a great upgrade!

Most defected to St George

Any reason why they all jumped ship?

How old is Blakehurst as a club?

Is there any issue with too many clubs in the area? Oatley St George, Rockdale, Blakehurst and Southern Districts are all closely located!

I know this doesnt compare with the Eastern Suburbs, Inner city or North Shore, but still for the interest level in the area it might be a bit too much???

There is also Engadine (who play in the wollongong comp) and burraneer in the St George/Sutherland area. Less density than (say) the lower north shorpe where at one stage there was Epping, Mac uni, Eastwood, Lane Cove, Old Iggies, hunters hill, Norths, Gordon, Chatswood, Roseville and probably more, but I think your right in that the interest level is lower per capita in the south.

Hey guys, I am moving to Sydney soon and will be based around the Hills area. Can anyone recommend Hills subbies rugby club? If not any other good subbies clubs nearby that may be looking for a broken down second rower after a social run?

Hey Angrydog,

Hills Rugby are a good social club, whose 3rd Grade team made the Grand Final last year. They have had limited success in the other grades since coming into Division 3, but were quite successful in the lower divisions. They have a strong juniors network and I believe that they will be re-introducing colts this year. While they don't have a great deal of success in the higher grades, they are always tough to play and have some good young players coming through their grades.

Unfortunately though, I can't recommend them to you, as I coach/play for Epping which isn't too far away (I actually live in the Hills area as well). We play in Division 3, with 4 senior grades and colts.

If you are interested in coming to Epping, let me know and I can give you the details.
