6 October 2012: Round 6
17:00 (local) South Africa vs New Zealand - FNB Stadium, Johannesburg/Soweto
Referee: A. Rolland (IRFU); AR: R. Poite (FFR), G. Garner (RFU); TMO: S. Veldsman (SARU)

They are playing for pride and bragging rights now. No game between these two teams is ever an easy one.

You can rest assured that the piggies will not be debating the merits of ankle supporting boots or the advantages of a three call scrum engagement sequence, and the backs will not be swapping salad recipes or discussing the exciting possibilities of having a subtle red wine with a poultry dish.

Both teams hit their top form in Round 5.

Will we see a repeat of this form in round 6?

Daylight savings kicks in the progressive states in Australia over the weekend of round 6 so be on your toes when setting reminders and alarms fot this game which is set for a 5pm kick off (same as the Wobs v Saffers in round 5).

They never come bigger then this, Bok vs Black. If the All Blacks were to drop a test, this will be the one. The young Bokke show their intend and this will be their ultimate test IF Meyer pick them. Goosen a must , Frans Steyn will be back. Jean show that he is much better in his custom position of 12 and the logical move should see Frans in 13. Other then that I wont change one bit. If our forwards played like they did in NZ we'll drop them.

Boks v NZ: Soweto sizzler

2012-09-30 21:10

Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writer
Cape Town - Never mind that the Castle Rugby Championship title has, not unexpectedly, been decided ahead of the clash of grand foes South Africa and New Zealand at FNB Stadium in Soweto next Saturday (17:00).

The All Blacks’ admirable 54-15 disposal of Argentina in La Plata put paid to any lingering hope the seemingly revitalised Springboks might have had of belatedly snatching the crown.

But at the same time there are unlikely to be any half measures on display when the world champions tackle their historically most respected rivals on their own terrain at the weekend ... “dead rubber” is very unlikely to be a dampening thought on the minds of the respective combatants.

The New Zealanders will be seeking to end the maiden campaign of this restructured competition with an unbeaten record, not to mention a 16th win on the trot which would take them to within one victory of matching records held by both the All Blacks and the Nick Mallett-era Boks of 17 in succession by top-tier nations.

As for South Africa, with good reason to be chuffed about a five-tries-to-one dismantling of the Wallabies at Loftus and a pleasing fresh sense of adventure, there can be no disputing that they would end the tournament on a statement-making high of their own - considering that this is their first season without a variety of once-legendary, World Cup-winning personnel - with a win on Saturday.

It remains to be seen, of course, whether the probably jet-lagged All Blacks will field their strongest possible line-up on paper, although these days “rotation” can actually be a shrewd and strengthening device on a murderous first-class itinerary.

Hats off to them, too, it is not normally the New Zealand way to disrespect the rich tradition of battles with the Boks by putting out anything too closely resembling a second string – if anything, South Africa have sometimes been more shamelessly guilty of this.

You could also argue quite strongly that both sides go into the fixture with a score to settle, given that the Boks lost in Dunedin recently but their opponents also knew deep down that perhaps they ought to have been beaten on the day.

In addition, Jean de Villiers’s outfit seek to confirm second-placed finish on the Championship table; a bonus point on Saturday, even if they lose, is almost certainly enough to ensure that the injury-decimated Wallabies cannot even overhaul them by
earning a full house of five points (unlikely under current circumstances?) in Argentina.

Boasting a four-point advantage in log-point terms, South African are presently also 69 points better off on a “for and against” basis.

What is becoming clearer is that, once again, the regrouping Boks are shaping up as likeliest challengers to the All Blacks’ No 1 mantle and will seek to only underline that at FNB Stadium.

Perhaps stung just a little by portions of the local rugby public voting with their feet by leaving significant sections of Loftus unpopulated on Saturday – was it at least partly a statement of disapproval for the previously rigid, robotic, kick-obsessed game plan? – South Africa’s far more spontaneous, have-a-crack approach against the dishevelled Aussies would have given many of their diehard fans a really warm glow.

Understandably, the Boks may be reluctant to turn the All Black game into too much of a free-flowing, fast and loose spectacle because that could play too heavily into the eternally attack-desirous visitors’ hands.

But they certainly have the pack (already proved in Dunedin) to match or eclipse the New Zealanders both for quality ball and physical relish, and now with a more progressive approach to flyhalf play - initial warts and all, welcome, Johan Goosen! - should also be in a far better position to keep the All Blacks guessing as to how they will play situations.

Skipper De Villiers and later also coach Heyneke Meyer didn’t manage to pull too much wool over our eyes by suggesting that the Boks didn’t deviate a great deal from their prior formula.

Yes, Jean, and we all just saw a blue giraffe stampede down the streets of Sunnyside in sunglasses.

Speaking of De Villiers, he may be one of very few Bok players linked to possible alteration to team composition plans for the All Blacks challenge.

It is quite possible that the starting XV will get a blanket vote of confidence, although the availability of versatile Frans Steyn, who sat out Loftus injured, is not yet known.

Should he be passed fit for Saturday, it will introduce the dilemma of whether to vault him straight back into battle -- and whether that should be at No 12 again, meaning a return to less familiar outside centre for De Villiers.

The captain, albeit still struggling to capture his known best personal standards, looked much more at ease closer to the action in Pretoria, where he also seemed - not surprisingly - to be able to pull leadership strings more effectively.

Throw in the fact that debutant outside centre Jaco Taute warmed increasingly to the combat after a tentative start, and the return of the hefty Steyn is not a foregone conclusion, should he be given the green light for consideration.

Fullback? He is capable of doing a smart job there, although Zane Kirchner was much improved against the Wallabies and Meyer will be reluctant to ditch someone he has been stubbornly loyal to, under those circumstances.

I a bit worried about this one Paarl, thought your boys looked pretty good on weekend. Funny thing I one of those old buggers that just can't quite ever stop myself getting built up when we play the Boks, not disrespecting Wallabies or anyone else, bit all those years playing rugby on bacl lawn in 60s, opposition alwys had to be Boks. And I know you buggers always come and give AB forwards a workover at the rucks and mauls.

Yep, ask any 7 year old SA rugby player against who do he want to play and it will be the All Blacks all the time. Its the measurement for our young lot. This will be Goosen, Etsebet, Vermeulens ultimate test. I have been waiting a very long time to see Duanne playing the All Blacks, this is it. Good to see Bekker getting his mojo back. If our forwards keep up the form they showed in NZ, we'll take this one. Scrums a bit of a worry.

Only because all a 7yo SA supporter can remember is losing the five of the last six games against the Wallabies ;)

Not really, its only because most of them play cricket aswell. ;) All Blacks will always be our biggest rugby rival, also the most supporters around. You dont get many Wallaby supporters in SA, they are a very special breed. My oldest son is a BIG Aussie supporter. He love to watch with me when we play your lot in all sports. Have my hands full with him. He learned this kak habit during his UK year when his biggest pals were Aussies and they watched sport together.

Could be worse PB - at least it's at home where there's no audience. How would it be in the crowd at Newlands? :)

Boks Rocked with bad news:

Francios Steyn is out for the rest of the Season after it was revealed that he has number of loose bodies - pieces of bone that have broken off over time and move in and out of the joint. Frans has been replaced by Lionel Mapoe.

Coenie Oosthuizen will fly to Durban with Dr Roberts on Tuesday to see a neurosurgeon for a second opinion on his neck injury. Oosthuizen was forced to withdraw from the Bok team to face Australia last week because of a worry over his neck and the neurosurgeon, who has operated on the likes of Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis before, will make a final call whether he will be able to return to action.

Sideshow Bob is also in doubt as he sat out of training on Monday with a hip injury.

No replacements have been called up for Coenie and Zane as yet.

This has the potential to be a fucking ripper.

If both teams played like they did last week I'll definatly stay up and watch it instead of the Wallabies.

I think Frans is a big loss. He is our best 12. JdV is too pedestrian and one dimensional.

Frans gets us across the line and there is no better tackling 12 than him.

But it gives Taute another go which is good.

Sounds like Kirchner is gone so Lambie will start.

Coenie Oosthuizen's neck is still a problem which is a bid worry.

:) He made the mistake once in a pub in Paarl starting to chant "Aussie, Aussie" when the Brutes played the Saders and the only Aussie in the match was Kiwi Aussie ref Steve Walsch. One big Boer came up to him and told him what a stupid chant that was. ;)

I dont agree with this. Jean played much better in the 12 position. Frans is a midfield basher and should have been in the 13 position. Anyway this will give Taute a second change to show his worth. JdJ will probably bench again with Mapoe and Lionel Cronje joining the sqaud. Coenie is a bigger worry for me, Da Beast isnt in great form at the moment and thats the only worry for me for this test, scrums.

Taute will have to have his act together it will be the biggest test of his career facing off with Conrad in a Black jersey.

Lionel Mapoe? Quota pressures or has he been good? Recall he had potential but has he kicked on? Is he wing cover though?

Strange selection. Ebersohn or the little Sharks laatie made way more sense. Genuine centres.

Mapoe is in great form in 13. He can cover wing aswell.

No need to stay up for the Men in Gold. It will be shown at 9am, 10 am or 8am depending on how Daylight savings works. 10 am in Sydney ( I Think).

HM rates size over finesse (?) ie a bigger player like Mapoe will always get in over a smaller guy like De Jong who has a very good step on him. He has shown this time and again via his selections Brussow, Daniels, Aplon etc etc.

I dont necessarily have an issue with that, but it may come back to bite him.

With regards to de Villiers, he has done a great job stepping up into the captaincy role, but his form as a player has'nt been the greatest. That Break he got last week, I couldnt help but feel that a younger version of himself would have had the gas to go all the way. I know that HM said he does not coach stampkar rugby but I feel that with de Villiers and Steyn as the centre pairing, they are both stampkar players and dont provide a lekker balance.

Jac Potgieter is also out injured and Arno Botha has been called in.
Hope jhe never comes back in.

Is Botha just about the last cab off the rank? Covers 6 and 8 right? Who else is there?

Seems like a tough kid.

Still think the Bulls and SA Rugby have screwed it up badly with CJ Stander.

Conundrum. Must play Steyn when he is fit.

The two together in Meyer's mind will suit his game plan. It is going to be interesting to see what happens next year. In my opinion JdV will have to play out of his skin in the Super 15 to keep the gig.

Between now and the EOYT Taute could stitch the thing up. That could force Henyeke's hand, especially if Schalk is back and the rumors that Fourie due Preez will be back are true (any news on that).

According to my family in Petoors, Fourie du Preez will Captain the Boks next year with the view of going through the the next Cup.
