4 from 7 for Manly against Norths, and Manly's depth is working hard given unfortunate injury, and notable representative honours with 4 players heading to France for the U20's (could have been 6 but 2 injuries) the Manly academy!!!!, and Eddie and Will off to join Vis to represent Tonga for a month. It'd be great to have all these players back on deck towards the seasons end.
Missed 4's but 3's Manly fought out a tight game and closed it out in the later stages.
2's kept there record for the season in tact but did work hard all game given the pre game changes. Andrew Davis had a great game leading by example and was always on the ball with some good turn overs.
Having some tall timber in the line out with the return of Dave Shotton upset the Norths rythym with some good steals in the first half.
With Tom Chesters being called up to 1's Sam Brisby played his part at 10 and the backline lined up.
1's 1 - 8 played a tight solid game, Kotoni made same big plays when required, and Sig had some strong ball carries. The first half was a hard fight with neither team having real dominance, it appeared that if either team could score back to back they could continue on with it. A try 5 minutes before the break, and another try just after was just what we needed.
After the break, and with some points buffer we looked to play with a bit more space and there were was some nice backline play that did not lead to points but was great to see. Brain Sef again was very strong with ball in hand and defence, on a number of occasions his runs had you thinking Vis was back on the field. Last year Norths Bill Meakes created trouble out wide - Woodhouse chopped him down every time with some great old school defence. Chesters has had a great season to date in 2's and was rewarded with a start in 1's, he continued his good form a the back.
The score line would have been more impressive if the shots at goal went over.
What a season to date;
After last season and the preseason chatter about the Wicks - after 8 rounds they lead the Club Championships - congrats.
Beasties having a solid start with some wins, a couple of very close losses, some bigger ones, then making a statements beating the Woodies.
Randwick downing Souths yesterday was also against the run of all the tipsters.
Next week has some interesting clashes
Club Championship leaders Randwick V Uni.
and Manly travels South.
and albeit the 2 Blues are now a quality team - the clash of the west.

It was a rough day for the Highlanders at Chatswood. The students got away from both 3s and 4s. Grand finalists in the making there.
I had some really encouraging feedback from the uni 4th grade coaches. They stated the heart and challenge, while not reflected on the scoreboard, was as strong as they have had this year.
Off the field, the club showed that the back office is starting to hum with some great partnerships with UTS and the local Junior clubs.
Hopefully the CEO of UTS and Bill Pulver were impressed with the organization and execution of the first running of The Vice chancellors cup.

This will challenge them as leaders of the club championship.

Yes now that TC is not clogging up a spot as the biggest plod with the Waratahs it really is a bit much for the lower graders at other clubs to be running a competition to see who can be his best sledger . It was funny last season though....
Not sure about Mr Pulver he's been very diplomatic of late about the Shute Shield being the 3rd tier, listening to plenty of people who want to bend his ear in club land etc. We'll know its more than platitudes when the cash flows direct (what cash you ask?) , the Super 15 franchises are directed to send their players not in the 22 competing each week back to their clubs to play and if the 3rd tier is not meant to pay players , what he and his Uni mates are going to do to enforce a level playing field ie; will Uni be required to give up its natural recruiting advantage.
Re Club Championship its great to see a real contest for the first time in a while - next three weeks will be very interesting across the grades

Huge Arse, unfortunately thats the difference between Australian rugby an the ARU. Great seeing a Hooper, Lucas, and Petersen down at the Village yesterday.
From a distance I think (could be wrong) a Marlin and X Brumbie Hegerty was also sitting with them - could we see him in a Marlins Jersey this year?

Taaf is a champion. After the game, he grabbed the goal post pads with one arm and hauled them in, then picked up rubbish with one arm and later MC'd the after match at Merrylands RSL, buying beers for debutants on both sides and 'sponsoring' the boat race. A true club man.

I really enjoyed the day of rugby yesterday. I was able to get there early and see all grades.
We lost fourths , won thirds , lost seconds ad won firsts. Great effort across the board.
Being able to chat with the guys after the games, talking to Andrew Cox on his recovery ,saying Gday to TPN.
All while sitting in the sun , eating a Two Blues burger ,sipping on a beer and not forgetting he DJ.
It was one of those moments where I thought this is what it is all about, The joys of club rugby

Great performance from the 2B's yesterday. I have to admit to an abiding fondness for the way they play their footy. When they front up in the pigs and are able to get front foot ball for their backs it's dynamite stuff. I'd love to see them against Souths on the telly this season, it would be worth watching.

Agreed and it's something I've reconnected with in the last couple of years. A suburban rugby ground in good weather on a Saturday afternoon is pretty tip-top isn't it.
