We're about to find out what this new competition is. Pulver is announcing something at 12:30pm today.

My understanding is that all conracts in Union in Australia, including those in club land, include a clause that effectivly allows the governing bodies (ARU, QRU etc) to call players to higher representation and the clubs have little or no input. The only time this can not happen is if the player has, in writing, 'retired' from representative competition. This is in line with the IRB regulations regarding international representation.

So, from my point of view, if the proposed 3T comp is run on a representative type basis by the ARU then the clubs will have no choice but to let their selected players go unless the said players refuse, in writing. In which chase there is then a time limit before they can be considered again and then they need to 'unretire' in writing.

I think until we know the structure of the proposed competition we are all jumping at shadows.

The 3rd tier comp should be in Sydney and every other franchise should pour their players into one big talent pool. This is the only way for Australian rugby to progress.

Australian Rugby Union today announced it will launch a new domestic Rugby competition in 2014, the National Rugby Championship.


Australian Rugby Union CEO Bill Pulver said the competition will be an exciting spectacle for fans and will enhance the pathway to develop elite players, coaches and match officials.

The competition will be sponsored by FOX SPORTS and Foxtel, with FOX SPORTS set to televise one live match per round plus the semi-finals and final.

Mr Pulver said in addition to providing additional broadcast content, the National Rugby Championship will generate extra revenue for Rugby.

  6. A modest salary cap will apply to keep the competition balanced and to keep expenses manageable.
  7. Steps will be taken to ensure there is a close working relationship between Super Rugby Clubs, National Rugby Championship Teams, and Premier Rugby Clubs.

I wonder if there is a model to allow for, for example, the QRU to run both teams? The infrastructure is there for most of the above. Access to Ballymore a considerable factor.

Although if only one game a week is telecast, perhaps it isn't?

all of it though? huge call from fox, they wont gain much out of it. good on them for supporting third tier rugby in australia though

If it's a success they will gain a great deal as it will cover 5 states. That's including 2 with the weakest market penetration of subscription.

NRL and AFL are tied heavily to FTA. The stronger rugby gets, the stronger Fox will be for it.
