I appreciate that it is the players decision based on advice that they are given. I also appreciate that he is (hopefully) getting the best advice available. I also appreciate that the pressure on players in his situation, and Berrick's last year and Julian's a few years ago, that this is their career and they don't want it to end.....

However, I have also been in the situation of trying to keep a player alive after on field incidents so am a little more cautious than most. Good luck to him but I still don't think that anyone is looking forward to being there the next time any player is injured to the extent that they can not play again. Be it though head injury, neck injury, knee injury or any other injury, first time or a repeat.

Brumbies have signed Harumichi Tatekawa.........

HE'S BEEN described as a Japanese version of Australian Wallabies playmaker Matt To'omua, and the ACT Brumbies are confident their first Asian recruit will come to Canberra ready to make an immediate impact in Super Rugby. The Brumbies have signed Japan's Harumichi Tatekawa, coach Stephen Larkham confident the 23-year-old will be a contender for a Super Rugby debut in round one.

Former Australian coach and now Japan mentor Eddie Jones recommended Tatekawa to the Brumbies, while Wallabies great Toutai Kefu has declared him ''the best Japanese player I've seen''.

Didn't McGahan say something is his podcast about a 36th player who they can sign? Or was it Lord Laurie? Who knows, but I think it's an easy signing for them and won't be too complicated.

The Brumbies seem a bit overstocked at 10/12, with To'omua, Lealiifano, Coleman, McCabe, Cronje and now Tatekawa.

They lost Holmes because he couldn't get any game time, and have replaced him with 2 players. Not sure if they can keep them all interested.

Coleman isn't moving from fullback/wing anytime soon.........

And Lilo won't be returning until March/April..........

Melbourne and perhaps others are already putting out feelers towards Christian and Matt for 2015 when they come off contract. While I'm sure that no-one at the Brumbies wants to lose either of them, it would be deporable if a bit of forward planning wasn't put in place now to cover the eventuality of one or both moving on after this year. And injury cover at 10/12 is extremely important as we've seen at the Brumbies over the past two or three years.

Looks like good contingency planning to me.

After Huxley, I think they're extra careful. I know a few members who didn't go to a game for a while after seeing him spasm on the ground.
Its the players decision to put onthe boots and run onto the park but its the Club manager and Coach and medicos who have to give the OK... the club is responisble for putting players at risk and has to provide medical profeesinals and insurance to look after the players overall health... ARU, IRB and RUPA must see that clun=bs and comps player safety standards are meet...

Maybe a sign of things to come - seems that players used to finish their careers overseas but maybe thae landscape is changing.

i think we will see more of our pklayers going overseas for a stint mid career and then possibly returning

Fox reporting the Mowen to play 2014 super season and then move to France. Wow
According to the article it was for family reasons. Certainly cannot begrudge a bloke for making the call for his family. Think he would have struggled to keep his wallabies spot with higgers coming back. Good luck to him.

'Family reasons' is PR speak for 'to make more money'. Would have been nice to see him hang around and push to retain his spot and hold onto the captaincy. Who knows what injuries or form will come up in 2014. The sceptic in me doesn't like the fact that he is taking the cash after his first breakout Wallaby season.

Mowen leaving is more of a blow to the Brumbies then the wallabies.

At least he has announced it now and not at the end of the year.
Still sad to see him go, (fucken French rugby with there fuck loads of money)

It's a pretty different lifestyle though. He'll travel for matches but will be home for most of every week and home for the entirety of every week with a home game.

Compare that to having two week tours of South Africa and NZ during Super Rugby and trips to SA and Argentina during TRC followed by a five or so week tour of Europe at the end of the season.

More money could certainly be a major reason for the move, but I also think it is unfair to disregard the fact that he will get to spend a whole lot more time with his wife and daughter.

He's explained himself very well in the article. I think that many of us don't really appreciate how long professional sportsmen spend away from home and underestimate the effects of this. When one has young children, these effects are magnified I would think.

He's not trying to have his cake and eat it, he sounds like he's made the call to spend a few years with his wife and family in France. I wish I'd had that opportunity as a young man. Good luck to him.
