WOW! Ref tried to rob Warringah

I agree, cracking game, the yellow card was harsh I thought but some consolation for the disgraceful display of refereeing.
I've seen that bloke do some other games that were also shocking.

I'm just a supporter, not connected to the ins and outs of refereeing and club politics but can someone tell me. How many rubbish refereeing performances does it take before someone finally takes notice and fires you? This kid obviously had no idea about the rules and was making poor and inconsistent decisions all day and has done so in the past!

If I went around doing a crap job week in week out i'd get the sack, why not the same with refs?

I watched the game on TV and didn't have a real problem with the referee, but I was a neutral observer ;)

My understanding is that all refereeing performances are judged by a former referee (at the ground) with feedback being given immediately to the man in the middle after the game and a report then lodged with the ref's association so I would have thought it unlikely that a succession of bad performances would go unpunished.

The only information I could find:
18/04/2012
By NSWRU Media Unit
Elections for the 2012 Board were held and the new SRU Board was announced as follows;
President - Rob Millner
Vice President - Grahame Boyle
Club Nominated Directors - Michael Jorgensen, Steve Bartrop, Bob Ellis
Independent Directors - Rob Millner, Chris Birch
NSWRU Appointed Director - Bruce Worboys
NSWRU Delegate - Chris Birch
The Chairman will be elected at the Board Meeting on April 30, 2012.
Incoming President Rob Millner thanked the 2011 Board for their efforts over the past 12 months and looked forward to being a part of a positive and productive Board in 2012.
This has to be out of date?

Definitely out of date - Jorgensen is no longer on the board at Randwick and the same goes for Bartrop at Easts.

Pretty much sums up the state of things when none of us can discover who runs the SRU doesn't it?

This is really just preventative refereeing. Referees do it all the time. Players know that the referee is giving the player the chance not to get penalised.

The hooker was probably defending in the back line. The "defending hooker" or man in the tracks is required so there is not an unfair advantage in the defensive backline. This is particularly critical in Sevens. You may also notice that the Tahs use Foley there so they can have an extra forward to defend in the backline.
A number of teams change their positioning on defensive lineouts. The hooker will often stand behind the lineout in the traditional halfback position to be able to join the lineout to lift an extra pod, or join a defensive mall/sack. The half then fills the vacant 5-metre channel position.

Can we get someone from SRU or NSWRU on the G&GR Podslam to discuss:
a. issues about Shute Shield in general, (some pearlers of games this year and the prospect of more to come even though all the Rockstars are away)
b. the pathway to NRC,
c. SRU player development in general,
d. Initiatives to grow the game in Western and Southern Sydney,
e. Opportunities for Newcastle, Central Coast or Illawarra Teams in the Shute Shield,
f. better integration with the Juniors, Subbies and Schools,

I thought the ref was ok, scums and lineouts were a lottery at times (but have yet to see a game this year where I agree with all set-piece decisions) but generally the first hour of the game was handled well.
Last 20 he lost the plot with some rather odd decisions, then gave a yellow that wasnt a yellow and then managed to penalise the Rats at often as he could (even if there was no "real" infringement.
I'll be honest I didnt see if the last penalty was a penalty - but Uni getting a win after the bell again made me see that it was very wrong however;)

I think they give feedback to all refs after the game apart from the 1st grade where they have a more formal meeting rather than just a quick sit down in stands - but a former ref does indeed watch all games.

Major problem is that there are a shortage of refs - good or bad, so I would imagine demoting somebody would be a last resort.
That being said I have watched four 2's games this year where the same referee has shown a severe lack of understanding/knowledge of playing the game and has made so many wrong decisions it has left players/coaches/fans extremely bemused. Yet I understand this referee is being fast-tracked to 1st grade very soon...

I dont think I agreed with a referee as a player or a coach so hardly likely to start as a grumpy old man!

It would be great to get some ex SS or Super players reffiing. I get the feeling Steve Walsh used to be a player and you can tell by the way he refs. I would say not overly pedantic but gets the right call most of the time. Think how good a Phil Waugh or someone who is well versed in breaking the rules would be at calling them

dave Beat has the program for Saturday been worked out yet - what games are on at manly and what times do they commence? In past years the 1st grade colts played at 1.30 before 1st grade

Yeah, if you go to NSW rugby website, draws and ladders you can see the times. It's an early start.

Wow! Just watched the highlights of the Rats v Students and even though I wasn't there...what a game! I nearly threw the computer out the window when the ridiculous penalty was given at the end, because I didn't know the end score. However, I have to give it to the Students, I've watched them play only a few times and I never seen them beaten until the final whistle. The waratahs could learn a lot off them. Unfortunately, the mighty Wicks just lost to the Woodies as well.

And I mean all day

2nd v 5th in 4ths, 2v6th in 2nds and 1v2 in 1st. Plus the Colts, which is always a willing contest with both sides truly believing the "Battle of the beaches" call.

Did anyone follow up with Rugby News' idea of a digital copy??? If enough people miss it - and pay some subs - you may be able to print a program out and take it to the game with you.

Uni provided an A4 simple printout and summary - nothing complicated at all and its a hand out as you go through the gate. It included all grades teams, and basically had their summary - basically what the club sends out to supporters via email / web usually on a Thurs / Friday.
