The Galah

Darby Loudon (17)
The Galah gave himself a self imposed red ( ex parrot) card last year . The stress of adding to the sage comments of others , looking for a new scoop on SS and the need to claw back lost social media hours caused me to fall silent. I've been dipping in and out of GAGR since and note today's suggestion from a contributor who suggests my club the MMM's are killing the SS and are warehousing players. I know abuse of fellow GAGR contributors is frowned upon but the Galah feels free to suggest the word Turkey might apply on this occasion !

Let mediocrity reign supreme and watch Australian rugby die. I have nothing but respect for Uni (renewed sympathy for Bruce Ross having to defend them from the same attacks) which has served as a model for Manly . The Marlins are in the black and well run , coached and conditioned around a deep player base of largely local players developed by village clubs and the colts system . Of course Sean Treweek is at the club - opportunity to continue to develop his game in a great rugby community .

Now I've red carded myself again till the Marlins lift the SS

Stinging and a deserved response Galah, as I posted earlier - kick back and thank her majesty for the birthday, turnovertwopasses posts aren't much chop.

Have you taken ten to go back and look at turnovertwopasses contributions or opinions in various threads though.
Agree with discussions about rugby but I'm not sure that turnovertwopasses approach to a discussion was the right way.

I have been consistently critical of the University model of world dominance and will continue to be so. Manly is a district club which, in my opinion, makes a huge difference. A kid growing up in the Manly catchment can identify with the Marlins, just as I did with Eastwood when I was a kid.

It was that identification with a local team that instilled a love of the game in me.

How many young kids throughout Sydney identify with Uni? At a rough estimate, none?

That is the essence of my continuing criticism of them. Self-interest is not necessarily a bad thing, but surely those inhabiting the Ivory Tower at Camperdown must have a tiny inkling that the game does need to grow at the grassroots, and for that to happen, viable district clubs are essential.

When I played the game, Uni were always pretty strong, but they certainly did not dominate to the extent that they have for the last 15 years, to the clear detriment of the game as a whole. In those days, very few graduates continued to play for Uni, some did, some retired, and a lot moved out to play for district clubs.

If there is anything more likely to lead to the death of the game, it is not the dominance of the stronger district clubs, it is the overwhelming strength of the Camperdown Corporation.

Some of us would settle for mediocrity, at a pinch, if the alternative is a long slow death.

I don't know Manly's players completely inside out but if I was to hazard a guess these are your local juniors?

Mitch Lewis, Dave Porecki, Harry Bergelin, Katoni Ale, Mali Hingano, BJ Hartmann

Tyron Rota, John Wunder, Daniel Alley, Fabian Natoli, Alex Northam

To add a few others Michael Hooper, Wycliff Palu, Lalakai Foketi, Jordy Reid

Not as many as first thought this doesn't include current injuries I just went through your last week teams?

Gordon Juniors who have played 1st or 2nd grade this season (might be more but of those that I know backgrounds of, went through team lists off NSW Rugby website) :

Hugh Cropley
Jim Handlin
Andrew Chapman
Roni Scarano
Jack Dempsey
Gordon Broome
Lex Fairley
Mark Williams
Michael Broome
Jack Maguire
Jonno Broome
Terry Preston
Matt Hayter
Will Shirvington
Henry Carmichael
Tom Matthews
Erik Moss
Matt McDougall
Nathan Scarano
Lucas Simkin
Xavier McCoy
Brandon Quinn
Sione Ala
Michael Manners
Lachlan Mitchell
Rohan Pixley
Ryan Matthews
Michael Cunneen
Michael Balk
Justin Rodgie
Mitch Lockley
Adam Vilimaa
Matt Vaughan
Scott Pursell
Alex Gregory
Jason Seage

We have been seeing full back lines of Gordon Juniors in 1st grade.

Sebastian Murphy and Harry Rorke could be added to that list but have missed most of the year through injury. Luke Rissman & Mark Johnson have taken the year off by the sounds of things.

Not sure why anyone would want to write Uni off at this stage.
They are currently running 4th and have to play Parra (twice), Norths, Wests, Woodies, Gordon and Easts. Have to assume they will win at least 3 of those and probably more. They'll comfortably make the playoffs and then potentially get some Tahs back. If they're in the playoffs they'll take some beating.

Could add a lot more to your listbut a quick through last weekends team lists and taking account of injuries lets me identify at least another 20 or so contributing to Marlin's depth - won't bore people but several have played first grade or are thereabouts . Some examples Baranyi, Daniels, Crerar, Wood , Brisby , Carolan - I'm sure others on this thread could elaborate to the extent it is worthy of further discussion .

Whatever way you slice and dice it Manly ain't Uni

Have to agree coach they are still a strong chance of making the playoffs

If you take into account the two losses they will have to Parra

Which are the 3 games you assume they will win.:)

Plus gee there are players that now call Manly home and have played there for a number of years now because it's a great club.

But you're winning the race for the wooden spoon, perhaps it's not just about retaining in numbers but retaining the right juniors. Dempsey was good to keep, there's a horde of Gordon's best juniors wearing a lot of other shirts these days.

All clubs go through it, lets just hope the Rays JV are sitting 1 (Manly), 2, 3 4 in a couple of years hey

Would expect Norths to have a decent representation too

Why ? It should be Manly and Warringah getting majority.

Ashley - Cooper and Crawford are certainties. McNamara has been selected apparently.

Matwijow, Cunningham, Miller, Wells, Cameron, Clark, Weeks,Grant are all outside chances but well down the pecking order.

Yes your right Gordon still wearing hangovers from the disasterous financials left over from 2011 and before that both financially and reputation.

Almost back on track financially though and starting to make some headway in regards to local area reputation - small steps.

Cooper wont be in the squad for the same reason Hooper and Palu won't be. Few clues in the rays thread. More possibilities and I understand these players could end up playing for their super aligned team.
