I've been thinking about how the changed points structure might or might not have impacted match scores so I've done the math & found that the 13 matches to date have averaged 55.7 points.

By comparison, the 30 ITM Cup matches to date are averaging 49.7 so it seems to me that if the purpose of changing the points structure was to produce a more entertaining style of footy, it hasn't really worked to any great degree.

The points aren't the issue, its how those points were scored..
Your average punter finds a try more entertaining then a penalty goal, Australian Rugby needs 'your average punter' to watch the game to increase the value of the broadcast rights.

Bar TV Sports, who have been streaming the Newcastle comp for the last two seasons and have started doing Subbies recently, will be streaming their first NRC game this weekend with the Rams vs Stars game. Hopefully the first of many games they cover.

That's excellent news! Well done to the Rams. Do you know if it will include commentary?

That's great news. They do a good job of their NHRU gig. Just one camera but that's all that's needed when the equipment is up to scratch. Well done Rams. Hopefully others take their lead.

The QLD games have been single cam but they have an onscreen scoreboard and good quality ref audio. I'll be at the game of course but I'll be interested to see the results.

BARTV do exactly the same. I checked out one of their streams of a NSW Cup game and if they can replicate that quality I'll be a happy camper.

Can anyone tell me how the ITM cup players are contracted to their teams?

As much as I love seeing the Rising freaking dominate, I really want to see players fairly distributed as the comp grows. Obviously finances play a part in the short term. Still loving the comp though and the chat it's generating.

Any Gaggers have any ideas?

Short answer:

ITM Cup players are paid anywhere between $18K & $55K. Each Union has a total cap of $1.35Mn or 35% (?) of their total revenue & can pretty much pay whoever they want whatever they want (but clearly Canterbury wouldn't be allowed to have Dan Carter on the books at minimum wage, NZRU have a "reserve" figure for players based on where they sit in the overall setup) & players are allowed 3rd party deals subject to them being above board, transparent & not contrived to under-value the player.

Players who also have an NZRU contract (125 Super Rugby plus 25 NZ7s) must be available for AB etc & their Union is reimbursed: $5K per week up to $50K max if they don't turn out for their Union at all.

In other words, you can sign 10 AB but it's still gonna take $550K out've your cap for guys who are unlikely to play more than the occasional game for you. Hence many more player movements than used to be the case & a wider spread of AB across the provinces: I seriously doubt that any AB will ever again include more than 5 or 6 players from the same Union.

What about a Radelaide team then, Capt'n Crowie?

All of their other live streams have commentary, so I would expect so. Even if it doesn't, I've quite enjoyed being able to hear the ref's mic in the videos the ARU has posted.

I actually have no issue with the Rising thumping teams. If they can build support for rugby in Melbourne and get their form to flow onto the Rebels it will be great. One of the reasons behind the comp is to grow the game.
