Campbelltown Harlequin Rugby Club . . . voted unanimously to return to the Illawarra competition for season 2015 . . .

The Committee believes that the club would not be able to fulfill the obligations required to remain in either the first or second division in the Subbies Competition for season 2015 . . .

The Executive Committee . . . believe the following benefits will come from the move to Illawarra.
  • The chance to be competitive in 2015.
  • The ability to downsize the number of teams without penalty should our playing numbers warrant it.
  • A better path into representative rugby with the Illawarra rep teams and the NSW Country system for both seniors and colts.
  • Less travel for players and coaching staff with the majority of away games less than 50 minutes from the clubrooms.

I reckon it will be Stars v Rays that will be televised in Round 9. They won't go to Dubbo and the Brisbane game is already covered plus the 2 Melbourne matches have rated very poorly on Fox.

Have you seen ratings figures for the NRC?

I understand you sentiment but how much credibility would the comp had if the best available players didn't play?
The fans want to see some superstars. Plain and simple.
The QLD derby on the weekend drew the biggest NRC crowd yet. I wouldn't mind betting a fair percentage of the increase was because Quade was playing. That's good for the comp and the game as a whole.

There's something like 175 new roster spots minimum. Why on earth would anybody want to waste their time with the players that do not form the top 350 players in the country?

I also think many no names before have gotten good exposure. Particularly young up and comers and playmakers.

Though I do think its wrong the amounts being paid to players is less than the shield

Not sure if it was already mentioned, but why is Dillyn Leyds back in SA for WP's game tomorrow? Was he always contracted to represent WP in the Currie Cup. Is his time at the Force (Perth Spirit??) over?
I haven't seen him in action yet this year.

There is this constant theme of always wanting more.

Oh, we have the NRC in it's first year. Now we need an under 20 NRC.

The NRC is good for developing young players who are vying for a Super Rugby contract but what about the young players who can't get a run in Shute Shield? We need more opportunities in case there's a guy in 3rd grade subbies who with the right develop could be playing 1st grade subbies and Shute Shield in a couple of years time.

No matter what is done, people still think there should be more.

We've already seen a handful of players from the NRC rewarded with Super Rugby contracts. We'll no doubt see a bunch more before the Super Rugby squads are finalised.

Realistically, there doesn't need to be a lot of players getting exposure in the NRC for it to achieve its aim. If 100 non-contracted players are involved and then 10 of them get a contract next year, that's still a lot of competition for the limited spots available.

Currently there are too many inadequate players playing NRC in fact.

I know the original post was deleted but I just don't get where this view comes from that club players would be prioritized for game time at all. Anybody watching the Currie Cup or ITM Cup would consider the NRC to be similar in it's squad make ups.

If players are going to develop, how are they going to develop if they aren't in an environment with 145 of the best 175 players in the country?

Who is going to want to watch a game with zero professional players playing? There's already enough people that don't watch the Shute Shield on the ABC for that.

35*5 = 175

23 man wallabies squad= 152.

7 international marquees = 145

145/9 ~ 16 per side.

So in a perfect world, no club players start in the NRC at all. Just mathematically.

The reality is that you don't get 145 professionals in the comp. After Super Rugby is over every team generally has about 10 injuries, plus every team loses certain players overseas yes they get new in but if they're from club rugby their not pros yet. I would guess that there are less than 90 conditioned pros available on any given week in this comp. Your number 145 is basically the 16 pros x 9. The number that Rising, Vikings and Spirit are allowed to hold back before offering the rest of their squad. This number is too high, unless, Rising for example select their 16 early in the Super Rugby comp and then just have to wear their injuries like every other team.
