Talking Points:

-Is this team controlled by JFRU or is it owned by one of the companies within Japan?

-What sort of recruitment plans are going to be used, do they plan on filling the roster with players from Japan or is this going to be the Japanese version of Toulon.

-Coach?

-Home games, are they all going to be played in Japan, which city?

-If an Australian player signs with the Japanese team, should they still be eligible for the Wallabies?

-What impact will this have on the broadcast rights, will it prove to be lucrative in Japan?

1) I would say try it through the JFRU first and allow bids later on if that doesn't work out.

2) Surely the aim would be to have as many Japan-eligible or Japan-capped players as possible. Maybe 75% minimum. I'd have thought that would be competitive.

3) What is Eddie Jones up to post-stroke? It would be great to have his input in some capacity.

4) No idea. Spreading it around sounds good given the distribution of the Top League teams. But you'd want to build some consistency with around 75% of games in Tokyo.

5) I reckon so. I don't imagine there would be many and they are still available for the Wallabies for all of our tests so let it be. Might be a good alternative to the sabbaticals malarkey that is going on.

6) I hope so.

What do you reckon, TOCC?

Eddie Jones is in great condition according to an article I saw fairly recently.

Off the booze, lost weight, and generally far more zen!! Seems to have made a great recovery which is wonderful news.

And still coaching the national Japanese team.

Like others I don't really like the structure, with them in a South African conference, but I'm excited about having a Japanese team in the competition. Hopefully it will be a great thing for Japanese rugby and help grow the game in Asia in the long term. If Super Rugby can really crack Asia then the Top 14 etc would become much less of a threat. And future super rugby formats could make a lot more sense with multiple Asian teams.

I think they'll be competitive too. I'm hoping it'll basically be the Japanese national team topped up with some foreign talent. Hopefully a few PI players and maybe a couple of former internationals from SANZAR countries.

It'll be very important to get the whole Japanese rugby community behind the team. Will be great for them leading up to the 2019 world cup.

Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't sure if he would continue on in that role. Given that the Super Rugby team would be a big developmental pathway to national honours, I reckon Eddie would have a lot of input.

Hopefully the Japanese Super Rugby side has access to the best of the Top League.

If it is seen as being above the importance of Top League success I can envisage companies reacting negatively.

A lot comes down to the placement of the competition in the calendar. Something I'm not too sure about when it comes to Japanese rugby.

Fairly sure it is. Think they wore hoops as the clash jumper. Really wanted the 1994 Syd blesidloe shot where he ripped off the arm.

that's a great one too, with the cut-off jersey. I loved that jersey from 95. Romania in yellow etc.

I think Top League starts after Super Rugby and only overlaps for teams that make the finals. I don't get the whole club vs country thing. Surely it has to be in the club's best interest to see a strong, successful national team. Success and the media coverage it brings is a great way to attract new fans to the sport.

Wouldn't be the first time for outsiders like ourself to shake our heads at the actions of clubs when they seem obviously at odds with the national interests.

I have concerns about the SA conference, I hope there is some provision for them to switch to the Aust or NZ conference in the future if SA decide they need another team

Nice pic there. Guess I like the current photo because it shows the rare sight of tony daly actually 'running'. Kearnsey must have been waving a bucket of KFC in front of him.
