Like most people here I find the selections of only two hookers and the non-selection of Horwill pretty astonishing. Cheika is taking a massive risk here and I hope it pays off, because an injury to either Moore or TPN would be catastrophic. Kev has a right to feel very hard done by.

The rest of the selections are pretty much bang on I think.

Surprised that Horwill missed the cut, but only a little. More surprised about 2 hookers and 2 halfbacks, that is really interesting. You certainly would not want any injuries at finals stages to 2 or 9. Still no doubt Ckeika has considered that.

I hope the risk they're taking is based on some statistical investigation. What are the chances 2 front rowers get injured without an injury to a back or a backrower? They've stacked the latter 2 and could easily drop anyone who got injured for a hooker. (except maybe AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), Folau, and Kuridrani)

a prop and a hooker getting injured between a team selection and kickoff is pretty rare based on my last 30 years of watching rugby. Not saying it couldn't happen but I don't ever recall it happening.

Even in a game.

The rules dictate you cannot replace a squad member without a 72 hour wait, but also the squad member must be ruled out for a period of 2 weeks or longer to be able to be replaced.

I disagree.

Gits third cover for halfback.
Sio/Smith third cover to hooker.
If there is a minor injury to the starter the backup will play 80mins.

It's not as bad as first thought.

The inclusion of Douglas is really doing my head in, he got the chance to play 20 minutes which he didn't deserve in the first place and was really poor. Horwill the best performer but misses out completely.

I'm in agreement with everyone although maybe a little less outraged. It is what it is. Cheika is the coach and he gets to make these decisions and then be judged by the results they produce.

I can't understand not picking a third hooker. Looking through the squads that have been named so far it certainly seems we won't be alone with this decision but it is a strange one. I would have taken Hanson instead of McMahon.

Not taking a third halfback is a risk I would have taken. I would have probably picked White instead of Genia though.

Kane Douglas is a baffling selection and one that is a big risk for Cheika. Douglas was a passenger in his 20 minutes last weekend and has a month to get himself to a level where he's as asset to the squad. That's going to be difficult. Horwill should have been included.

If Cheika really wanted to include Douglas then he should have done it instead of Speight or Tomane. I have absolutely no idea why both have been included. We clearly have too many wingers and it's clear that both Speight and Tomane won't be our first choice pair and potentially neither of them will be in our first choice wing pairing (which I think could be Mitchell and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)).

The thought of Smith or Sio playing hooker for 80mins is actually much worse then first thought..

Yep. The only thing I hold against Palu is that with his inability to play long minutes, he limits your substitutions by absolutely having to sub him.

It would take 2 simultaneous injuries for that to happen. If any position we had 2 simultaneous injuries then we are screwed.

Except winger cos we have a shit load of those - and they always get injured apparently ;)

In any side where we pick him though, he's likely to be replaced tactically at some point. He has shown over the last two years that he can play longer minutes if required.

I'd be starting Pocock at 8 for all the big games but I do think Palu should have been in the squad. Number 8 is probably the position that suffers the greatest injury attrition.
