Agree @JPR. Newington have not yet failed to score any fewer than 4 tries in any match so far, win or lose, so clearly it ain't their offense that's put them mid-table at the turn. That they've leaked an average of 31pts per game across the first 5 matches says much, but they have started to sharpen up that defensive average in their two most recent games. Hence my Round 2 'smokey' call on them.

New will be dependent on the right conditions to cause an upset against the top 3.
Heavy rain and a game played in the forwards and they could steal a win against anyone.
A dry pitch and conditions that suit running rugby and they will struggle.
Having seen all the sides now they have the heaviest but least mobile pack. Some beefy boys that are carrying a few spare rolls.
They tired against Scots in the dry conditions and gave away 3 late tries.
The fitter sides align their forwards quickly across the paddock.
Late in the game some of the New forwards were slow to their feet into the defensive line so the gaps opened up.
But Round 2 matches and coming into the heart of winter we may well see the rain and mud again....it's still wide open.

Yup, and it will not hurt New's chances any by having their first-choice Flyhalf, Kuenzle, back and fit and firing!

Yes those were the 4 that I would think are likely to make NSW 1s

hardly controversial given 2 were in NSW 11s in 2015, and one was Vice Captain of NSW u16s

and the other ... well he is the son of an all-black .. not sure why he wasn't in 2015 rep teams ... injured?

Highly mobile packs give coaches many more options and definitely makes for attractive rugby IMHO

Another reason why the New Kings match will be interesting is the New 1's coach used to coach Kings 1's .....and it was a very successful period for Kings.

I'm sorry but a scrum half from a team that has lost 16 games in a row in the top division and a fly half that experiences the lesser pressure of 3rd XV rugby....Is there nobody at 9 or 10 from Riverview, Kings or Scots that you consider worthy. How are these guys failing week in week out?

The Under 19 scrum laws are not at all relevant to level of GPS 1st and 2nd XV. The laws are designed to prevent large packs from dominating at junior level, think Under 13's and below. The reality is that a large pack adds very little benefit to your scrum, as is evident by the dominance of the Kings and Riverview scrum which features comparatively small tight fives.

I don't think any GPS 1st XV side would boast any players that could be considered midgets... Purely from the anecdotal evidence of my observations, teams such as New and Joeys seem to have large tight fives. On both occasions I've watched them play, the View scrum has gotten the better of them.

Apart from Petterson (5), I wouldn't consider anyone to be particularly big. Fenn (8) and Rorke (6) are certainly an intimidating presence in the forwards but at their given positions, are fairly irrelevant at scrum time.
