There were a few surprises in the Oceania 29 for me but not a lot.

The Oceania event is not all about winning at Bond University, but about doing well in Georgia also.

In the Worlds they will be playing five games in 19 days and they need to look at players who can deal with three games in nine days at Bond.

As much as we don't like to use versatile players because specialists tend to play better in any position, every team playing in Georgia will have to compromise because they will have only 28 players available.

Therefore the remarks of Braveheart above, regarding the no. 8 position, make sense.

But sometimes it's difficult to know which compromise to take.

The choice of Swinton above Girdler for Bond may look odd but he can play 6 and lock with equal facility, and is a lineout expert, whereas Girdler's best attribute is being a ball runner.

On the other hand it's a bit of a risk because with Leota crocked for the season they will won't have a big bopper ball runner in the backrow and they may need all the ball runners they can get, even if they are not as large.

And there are no versions of Lukhan T and Rodda in the second row this year to balance that, as I have been saying for months.

They may even look at scrumhalf Strang playing at flyhalf in parts of games in the Oceania Champs next week.

That may be one reason why he was safe for selection there: who knows what would happen if two flyhalves get crocked in Georgia at short notice, maybe in the same game?

All that said, I was a bit surprised that Goddard was overlooked for Lonergan, who was a schoolie last year. He played well enough for Aus Schools in 2016 but Goddard is talented and is a good enough goal-kicker.

But Lonergan has always got spots ahead of older players; so let's see how he goes.

Glad to see Maddocks pronounced healthy, and likewise the emergence of Horton was a complete good surprise. But he wasn't in the Gen Blue team, even the extended squad - no doubt because of injury - so he could be underdone.

Good to see Jack Mac at 10. Dunno if he was injured before but his exclusion for the original 48 invitees to the first Bond camp was otherwise unaccountable.

Agree with your logic Lee. Girdler was a standout with for his ball running and aggression so I hope the others step up. Your blog clarified most of the non inclusions, but Goddard must be considered unlucky. A standout year for the halves this year.

The significant thing about the lists I got last night, for any trainspotters out there, was regarding the players who weren't in the 29 for Bond.

They could have mentioned lots of players who weren't in the 29, but they explained the absence of only some, but not others.

Sevens - Hutchison, Anderson, McNamara, Kennewell
Super Rugby - Perese, Vui, Ha'angaha, Uelese, Tuipulotu,
Injured - Walker, Luka, Valetini….

… were the only not-selected players they mentioned; so you can suppose they were interested in them but not any others in those groupings.

They also mentioned only Leota and Hoopert as being out for the year; so you can assume that they would have been candidates had they not been crocked. No other long-time injured played was mentioned; so they probably weren't on the radar.

Not a trainspotter? Carry on then.

Where are you Hugh Jarse? We miss you mate for this stuff and other things such as plain common sense.

Based on form and availability, it'll be pretty close. Obviously a Horton was injured for the Super under 20s so didn't see much of him. Swain and Hockings would be my starting locks, and like it or not I wouldn't be surprised if Jooste gets the nod at 12 based on reputation and experience. Looks like a handy back line but a bit iffy on the wing

Pretty good lineup HTC, although Jooste is experienced I'm still not convinced. I'm not a fan on past form. Anyway we see. Silverado, wot you mean with wing?

Ngamanu will be good and Ramm, from what I saw in u20s comp, has some speed. I'm sure they'll be fine. What position does Jooste play? If he is a 10 keep him at 10. It never worked playing the boys out of position in the backline last year.

Just that I don't think the Super 20s showcased much on the wings. Ngamanu had to be picked if he missed out at 15 but I've never seen him on the wing. Ramm was good but I don't think we're as strong in this position as others in the backline. Similarly, the front row has a touch of Bradbury about it.

Ngamanu is contracted as a wing for the Reds, he has pace and is light on his feet, he doesn't have a brilliant boot, the likes of Maddocks but he has been my pick all along for the wing much the same for Perese. If you want to play a fast running game as Cron has said you need someone in the centers with good hands that can also run good lines and a 12 that can run it up (Tuipuloto). If you have Jooste at 12 then have a runner the likes of Perese maybe at 13.

Interesting line up. Notability for me Nucifora left out, McGregor on the bench and Horton reserve prop?

This whole tournament exists to look at the possibles. Especially, our first two games against the PI teams.

Expect some selection eyebrow raises, and 2 or 3 of them will come good. Along with these surprises there'll be the 5-10 from this group that we expect to make it, plus 5-10 current Super Rugby players (Uelese, Tuipolotu, Perese, etc.), and that'll be the squad for the tournament.

16 is usually the reserve hooker - it would be Malolo who would be the reserve prop. I can't remember his playing other than hooker in the Gen Blue training squad games last year, but he's big enough.

Obviously there are a heap of first choice players in the starting team named for the first game - especially in the back row - but I doubt if the list purports to be the best 15 or 23 attendees at the Bond camp.

Likewise for the game on Day 2, when they play Fiji (which is ranked lower than Samoa).

But against NZ I think they will pick the best possible 15 and 23 of those that are there.
