I’m guessing the coaches reckon Enever is a stronger scrummager, otherwise seems a bit odd that he goes straight into the starting lineup

Does Cheika just pick names out of a hat?
Maybe it’s alphabetical

Well the names left in the hat were - wait for it - Enever. That's it. It's interesting that he is starting though, although I haven't watched a lot of his games I suspect he's more a dour set piece professional whereas Philip can inject a bit of dynamism late in the game.

KOB, Enever is more like Philip than a a dour lock in the mold of Simmons (which is my interpretation of that description). While he will be willing in his hit ups, I don't think he would be as effective as Philip in that role. Seems odd to me that he would start when Philip has been in the squad and had at least one game off the bench.

It was really the starting point that I was making. So Philip had not been so bad that he deserved to be dropped but he's not good enough to start ahead of someone who might have replaced him on the bench if he had been bad enough to be dropped and Enever had been good enough to demand a spot.

No, dour as in workhorse, slogs it out, it's not a criticism. No reference to Simmons. Enever and Philip are likely to share a game and although there's certainly more prestige in having the starting jersey, from a coaches perspective it's likely more a strategic decision about which player is better suited to the first half of the game plan and which to the back half. Ask Inside Shoulder, seems like he knows best.

Well fuck. Enever has to be industrious and accurate, and Kepu, Sio, TPN, Ala'alatoa, McMahon and Hooper have to lift their workrate in carrying the ball if we're going to be successful tonight.

Who else is staying up for it? I have exams on Monday and don't know if I'll be better prepared by studying until 2am or getting a few hours of sleep in before it starts.

Coleman's a huge loss, would walk into any international side, but I'm confident we have enough high quality players in our pack remaining to get the job done. Dunedin was a huge challenge but just about every player stood up even Simmons went to another level. TPN, Kepu, McMahon, and Hooper will lead the way and I expect Enever, Phillip, and co. will ably follow. What a test of depth, will make a victory even sweeter.

I actually think Rob Simmons is the one who needs to step up the most, Simmons needs to lead by example and be industrious and accurate. Enever can be forgiven for being overawed in his first test match.. Simmons can't, he needs to play to his potential tonight.

Great preview from Reddit:

Painfully reminded about Wilkinson's drop goal and Itoje's lineout clapping / shouting from last year. The latter is one of those things where you go "yeah well fair play for taking any edge you can get" but also want to see him punched in the mouth for it.

Jesus Christ that bloke must be annoying to play against.

Also haven't seen it discussed here but Speight's fallen off the bench as Cheika's elected for a 6-2.

I can't find any announcement. It appears to be a 6:2 bench as Speight isn't in the team photo for the match.
