in 2017 10 boys were returning from Aust School Boys (ASB) and Barbarians (BARB) Selections in 2016.

In 2018 by my count 7 are returning from 2017. Can anyone verify or fill in any blanks?

1 Angus Bell ASB (NSW)
2 Jack Winchester (BARB) (edit)
7 Luca Moretti BARB (NSW)
10 Campbell Parata BARB (QLD)
12/13? Joey Walton BARB (CS) (edit)
14 Albert Hopoate ASB (NSW) (inj 2018?)
15 Brendan Jiminez BARB (ACT)

Looks like there are lots of opportunities for new blood to come into the squad.

Additionally I think there are 9 players from NSW I or II who remain at school in 2018 (please edit if I missed any).

4 Williams NSW 1
6? Freeman NSW I
8 Reimer NSW 1
9 Tejcek NSW II
10 Savala NSW 1or 2? (Added to squad)
12? Harris NSW II
12? Easy NSW II
13? Bell (Back) NSW II Selected Aust U18 Sevens
15? Ilias NSW I

Would be good to know how many from other States including Combined States that are returning as well. So please post.

Does anyone know how many Aust Schools Rugby Union are looking to take to the UK on tour at the end of the year? I assume 25?

Do we know who has been appointed in the roles of coaches for this year?

Would be a great year to get some quality coaches with the tours taking place, I hope they have created a good team of coaching staff.

Head coach has been appointed https://www.schoolsrugby.com.au/2018/news/australian-schools-team-head-coach-appointed/

Has caused much consternation and Alan Jones has weighed in (refer post #6) AJ makes a few good points (never thought I would ever say that) but I suspect it wont lead to any changes.

Remaining Coaching appointments I havent seen.

Thanks for sharing that info.

I’m interested to see who else gets in those positions now. They should advertise who applies- make the process transparent.

Got a question guys...as someone new to rugby coaching and looking to progress through the system, is there are good reason as to why the coaches must be teachers or "members of the teaching profession"?

Not saying the best suited coaches for these teams aren't teachers, but seems strange as an outsider to limit the field of candidates like that.

I believe it's to say that the school boy pathway is one for not just players, but teachers as well.

Yeah all of the school coaching positions, across all sports, are taken by teachers as far as i know.

Good teachers also make, good coaches. In my opinion and Graham Henry’s as well.
Pretty sure i wasnt questionning that teachers can make great coaches, just looking to understand the reasons better. Seems like a reasonable action in response to the annual claims of nepotism...

If you can’t handle someone commenting that teachers make good coaches without taking criticism, despite none being directed towards you. I would recommend avoiding coaching in roles that are often met with routinely harsh judgement.

Do you have a crystal ball fkj?
From Alan Jones' piece in today's Australian:
"These are facts that the St Edmund’s “club” can’t deny England call their team England Under-18 and the players and coaches are selected by the Rugby Football Union. The best players get picked and are fast-tracked with academy contracts after they leave school.
In New Zealand, only one teacher is part of the coaching team of three. They use the know-how of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union to select and develop players. Whether we like it or not, we’re a joke at this level in the rugby world."

The role of coach for a schoolboy rep team is bigger than coaching a rugby team. You need to care for 20+ young men who are away from their normal environment for a week and competing in an elite tournament. Teachers have the natural track record to do this and are much more accountable to the boys and the schools. It would be a more difficult decision to appoint someone from outside the schools system due to the duty of care. Potentially it is prohibited by the Schools Rugby Union.

Agreed that teachers have a better skill set in organising and managing the "away trip" and as someone who has organised events like this before, I always gravitated towards teachers/ex-teachers because I knew they knew how to work in this environment.

But this isnt a trip to a camp ground or conference centre. And nor is it a low to mid level schools rep team. It's the pinnacle of the Junior Player pathway in this country and the coaching of the team, the outcomes desired and the guidance of these players towards high performing adults should take priority over where a coach works. The boys and their Rugby development, at this level, take priority over a teacher's needs or desires.

The question I have in my mind is would any of the recent Australian Schoolboy coaches be an appropriate pick for say an NRC or Junior Super Rugby team or higher? If the answer is yes, then all good, they are the right choice for the job. If the answer is no, then they are not qualified to take an Australian school boy team and shouldn't be considered.

I have no idea if the current appointment fits the above criteria or not, but I think any future school boy coaching role needs to factor it in.

Agreed.

And the medical staff would be selected based upon their medical/physio qualifications, not if they are school teachers.

Coaching and selecting should be the same.

organising and managing the "away trip"
There's your manager role right there.
Coaching and selection is a separate task.

The issue you will come up against is how school sport is funded in Australia. Schools fund these programs and they are run by teaching staff. While it is beneficial for all for the school rugby unions to work with the state and national organisations it will not be at the level of other countries. You'd be better looking at other Australian sports and see how the governing bodies work with school sport for a comparison, rather than rugby in other countries.

I also note that this issue seems to only be relevant for high profile roles and not lower level school rep coaching roles. Do they open up regional and association coaching roles to those outside the teaching ranks too? Who would have the time or willingness to take these roles?

For full disclosure I am a teacher.

Some great selections.

While many disagree with the Head coach selection, there are some great choices in this coaching group- James hilgendorf is a no brainer and future schoolboys coach in the making.

I believe Brad Gill has shown he is consistently capable in the role, a fantastic coach.

Jon Fitzgerald is a sensational coach and it’s great to see him move up to into Australian selections by being a part of the combined states team. With him at the helm, there could be a chance for an upset at the championships.

My apologies I do not know all the others, but I’m sure others can add to there capabilities.

Congratulations to all appointed.
