2019 TV ratings and crowd numbers

Collector, a small NSW town of 330 residents, attracted 18,000 visitors to its pumpkin festival. Sort of shows up the crowds going to rugby these days, but, of course, who'd choose to go to a Super Rugby game when they have the option of all the excitement of watching a pumpkin grow?

Maybe rugby grounds should look at hosting some sort of weird festival on game days to get a half decent crowd through the gates.

Maybe get RA directors to put themselves in the stocks and the crowd can pelt them with fruit.

You'd sell out every venue in Australia, guaranteed.

Will those payments be going up … ?

It seems RA (and indeed Sanzaar) really need something like the "World League" to get happening.

To that extent, hopefully there's still a flicker left in the concept.

Personally would be great to see Rugby Australia not just rely on others for rugby to have a pulse. Only for so long you can shuffle the deck chairs until the music stops.

Locals must be disappointed with those Shute Shield ratings. Wasn't so long ago they were averaging 35k and up over 50k at times.

Last year most games didn't crack 10k. So these ratings are actually an improvement. I'm also quite dubious over those claims of averaging 35k. Pretty sure that was for the GF a couple of seasons ago. There's a bit of a myth being propagated by a number of people about the true popularity of the SS. Based off three crowds a season.

That said, it probably does deserve more love in terms of viewership. The games on TV so far this season have all been pretty good with a few being great. Very entertaining. But certainly not widely viewed.

I'm talking back on ABC, as reported on these very pages!

The way the sample works the difference between 5 and 10 thousand is literally two or four people on the sample watching

Blues v chiefs 35k
Reds v Tahs 49k

Thought the game was pretty good and deserved a bigger crowd than that, but 11 losses in a row, and plenty of ordinary games amongst them must be having a toll.

Election night also impacted everyone's numbers

Super Rugby games wasn’t too bad over the weekend with 49,000 tuning in for the Reds/Waratahs clash on Saturday night – again probably affected by Election coverage – and then a further 19,000 watched the replay on 10 bold in the morning. 45,000 viewers tuned in Friday night to see the Rebels take on the Bulls.

Lovers of the Shute Shield will be delighted to learn that 12,000 tuned in to see the action between Gordon and Eastwood on 7two on Saturday.
