Really? He’s a nice bloke to have a beer with but woefully under qualified for a CEO gig. His banking roles leveraged his network, not his non existent management skills. Shore school to the fore, to the detriment of Australian rugby, a la the last 30 years of incompetence.
Give me the qualifications for the right CEO from your point of view. I've worked corporate jobs for over 25 years and my observations are this:
* no actual qualifications required, tho something formal is preferred
* An ability to make things look good when they aren't necessarily
* Networking (of course) to be able to run some deals
* An ability to speak in public without looking like a complete muppet or harming the brand
* The odd new idea, but nothing too crazy or you'll get blamed for it
* Willingness to stick head above parapet
Besides any of that, you're not even relying on company performance to keep yourself in a job, a lot of the time. Inherent psychopathic tendencies appears to help.
It sounds much like a politician's gig TBH.
The difference is you want someone with experience. Maybe Waugh doesn't have a decade in the C-Suite. Maybe he doesn't need it.
