ACT Brumbies 2026

Hong Kong China playing with a lot of intent and flair. Correct me if I'm wrong but is this the team that has qualified for the RWC?
Yes - HK qualified for 2027 RWC. HK #7 and #8 well into their 30s now - they'll be looking to uncover some youth to fill those backrow gaps. HK have youth in the backs which is encouraging.

Am at the game - hot here 28C and humidity quite high.

This was picked out of a post in October…

“The camp is the initial step on Hong Kong China’s road to Rugby World Cup 2027 (RWC) after qualifying in July 2025 - becoming the first men’s team from the city to achieve the feat after the women reached the RWC in 2017.”

Anderson playing really well at fullback. Looked a little shaky under the high ball early but has looked composed since. Set up two tries from first-receiver and has had a strong kicking game from the back-field.

Meredith on fire again - catches HK #11 out of position again with a very smart grubber for Wilcox to score.....HK fitness exposed - backrow struggling to keep up.

Uh huh

Jim Clark (26)
Who will be fullback? Muirhead? Would Meredith be an option there?
Over the past year or two, Debreczeni seemed to have usurped Muirhead as the preferred back-up 15. Combined with the general preference for play-making at 15, this leads me to suspect Meredith will have first dibs on the fullback jersey.

Rose coloured glasses comment was towards BR.
Meredith having a higher ceiling than Edmed absolutely baffles me. At 26, I’m not sure how is suddenly going to take his game to new heights.
Chris Latham went from a chronically error-prone journeyman at 29 to the best fullback in the world at about 31. I don't know why anyone would think it's some kind of ridiculous fantasy that a good Super Rugby bench player can become a good Super Rugby starter or a Wallaby contender after passing the ripe old age of 26.

Having said that, I don't claim to know which of Edmed or Meredith will end up doing better if they're both given a chance at 10 next year, but I sincerely doubt that their 10 month age difference is going to be a major factor.

Austin Anderson made an excellent fist of fullback in tonights game in HK. I think he's well and truly in the mix for that spot until Tom Wright returns.

Others who impressed against HK were :

Hookers, Chris Mickelson and Lipina Ata both had really strong games. Both hookers nailed their throws.

Props, Baxter and Brndusic were both good at set piece, while Hepi and Chan-Tung were strong around the ground.

Locks, Harvey Cordukes pick of the group tonight.

Backrow, all solid though Toby McPherson made a few too many mistakes.

Half, Klayton Thorn excellent in the first half. Dan Nelson good in attack but more than a couple of forgettable box kicks.

No 10, Declan Meredith was outstanding with game control, setting up attacks and 9 from 9 off the tee. Scored a try and set up at least four more.

Centres, Kadin Pritchard was a standout at 13. Scored a couple and set up others. Made a lot of line breaks.

Wing, Shane Wilcox did what he does, chasing kicks through the line to score a treble.

Fullback, Austin Anderson very good at the back. Set up line breaks playing first receiver and contested high balls from both sides.

Meredith MOTM just ahead of Pritchard, while both hookers were top performers in the forwards.

Ok.
Lets look at what we know. Brumbs went after Edmed when it was obvious Noah was out the door. Meredith has 18 brumbies appearances with no Aus A representation so it’s purely speculation that he’s up to this level (admittedly he’s been stuck behind Noah and wright). Edmed on the other hand has vastly more experience (I personally don’t rate him all that highly but he has more runs on the board than Meredith). Wright has gone down, which means Meredith will almost certainly now go to fullback so the No.10 debate is pointless anyways.
I’d love nothing more than seeing Meredith absolutely dominate and boss the brumbies team around but based off the evidence I’ve seen I’m not holding my breath. Good luck to him.
No need to hold your breath Tom. Meredith very clearly answered your concerns about him against Hong Kong China tonight. Recommend you read the posts about the game on this thread and the game blog on the Brumbies website. None of the No 10s playing elsewhere in Aus has ever shown the game control and management Declan showed to night. And how does 9 from 9 off the tee grab you?

Yes - #10 looked in complete control tonight.

As a spectator at the HKFC, I expected more from Hong Kong - they are going to be on the wrong side of some huge scores come 2027 RWC, unless they find some young guns who were born in HK, that they haven't signed up yet.

Brumbies took a while to get into the game (it was very hot and humid), but they owned the 2nd half.

Very enjoyable rugby.

Yeah must admit I was pretty concerned with how he would go against the mighty Hong Kong China.
