I see on the Sydney gold site a reference the the Brisbane and Gold coast side playing the curtain raiser to the Reds v Rebels trial game. Good to see the Brisbane guys delivering on their promise to the boys of games before super matches.

Some photos from the Gold Coast v Brisbane Yellow game at Ballymore on Friday night at this link

The game ended a 17-all draw, with Gold Coast scoring a try after the whistle, but unable to convert for the win.
Players who stood out were No. 5 (?) and 15 (Clifton Setu) for Brisbane Yellow, and 23 (?) and 6 (Lachlan Currie) for Gold Coast

The result from the U17 North Harbour V Illawarra match was 32 to 5...IMO the teams were quite evenly matched with handling errors being the key difference

Agree with Azzuri on the difference between the two teams. It seemed to me that the Sydney Nth boys had their combinations working better, Illawarra made too many passes to nobody and ran into each other too often. As is often the case the Illawarra boys were "harder" at the breakdown and I felt they should have tried going through the middle more to draw Sydney Nth, in before going wide. The Sydney Nth boys worked their backline well kicked well for position constantly turning the Illawarra boys back on themselves.

This was the first hit out, both teams will be much better for it.

My view is that this is just what is needed for club land rugby. The games were a good standard testing both sides, played in good spirit. It gave the coaching staff of both sides lots to work on. After 5 games at that speed and intensity all the boys standard will be much better for it.

Players to watch:
Sydney Nth (didn't provide number with the program so don't know names)
No 19 blindside flanker good solid hard hitting player, no nonsense.
No 11 winger hard for the defense to deal with.
No 12 Inside centre plays the way I like IC to play, hard and straight into channel gives his 5/8 good options.

Illawarra
No 28 Brodie Ford winger never stops fighting his way forward, which means the forwards can get to him support him and keep the momentum.
No 6 Jordan Ieremia flanker works hard and is hard on the ball (put a couple of big hits on too)
No 13 William Latu fullback constantly coming into the backline and causing problems for the defense. Kicking needs to improve.

Well done ARU a big step in the right direction.

Both the 15 and 17's Sydney North West (SNW) v's Hunter games were entertaining. In the 15's Hunter looked strong early but failed to convert, once SNW got a little ball they looked the better side. there was plenty of dropped ball and both teams didn't play to the conditions (wet). SNW improved from their hit out the provious week and i think the extra continuity was the difference. 27 - 19 SNW. The 17's was much the same plenty of dropped ball with SNW taking advantage of having played last week by stringing more phases together. Hunter were gallant but appeared to be a couple of standout players short of really testing SNW. For large parts of the game Hunter played really well but were undone by mistakes which resulted in tries to SNW. SNW completely lost their structure at times during the game and played without composure, both teams, will be better for the run. 34-12 SNW

I went along to watch the Illawarra V Sydney West games at St Gregorys College Campbelltown.

While the Illawarra 15's held there own in the first half, going into the break one try down, the second half saw them succumb to Sydney Wests constant raids on their try line with 6-7 unanswered tries in the second half. The Illawarra side certainly showed they had the skills but as the score line started to blow out their heads dropped and Wests turned up the heat.

The U17's was a hard fought, scrappy affair (penalties a plenty) with both sides dishing up their share of big hits, strong running and tough contests at the breakdown. Wests were big and mobile as was expected but the tough Illawarra pack had come to play and had several chances (including two disallowed tries) to take the win. In the end both sides had to settle for a draw with one converted try a piece. It was a big improvement for the U17 Illawarra lads after last weeks debut match against North Harbour.

Did anyone else get out to watch this game...any match reports from other games in the pool?

Ii was also out at the West v Illawarra, I agree with you assessment. Once the Wests 15's got a roll on the Illawarra boys were just starved of the ball and in the heat just couldn't hold them out.
The 17's was a scrappy affair, Illawarra had their chances to either score tries or take the two reasonable simple penalty shots in the second half that would have won them the game. West had very little ball all day and the ball they did have they wasted by rushing the play. The stand out passage of play for me was the last 5 minutes of the first half of the 17's. Illawarra were pressing very hard with their big forwards banging away at the line, the Wests boys kept them at bay with some exceptional defence, even after no 7 was sent to the bin for repeated offences. The 4 and 5 for Wests were exceptional during this period. I think the Wests boys could go ok going forward if they value the ball. Illawarra are just missing the mark in the backs. there forwards are very strong.

I was out watching the Townsville Boys play Brisbane Purple at Ballymore Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday. The Townsville boys had a full weekend of Rugby with games on Friday Night, Saturday Afternoon and lunchtime on Sunday.

The U/15's Townsville Boys had a tough 2nd day on Saturday with purple showing that they were a well drilled unit. With very strong running forwards and creative backs, purple dominated in every position and constantly denied Townsville space to create or time to setup plays. Purples support play and running from all their players was a highlight Townsville 0 Brisbane Purple 59.

The U/17's game was a different story. Townsville came out full of running and their backs were constantly forcing Purple backwards. Townsville scored first (out wide) in a well constructed draw and pass play through their backs 5-0. Townsville continued to attack and force purple backward until a cut-out pass was brilliantly intercepted by one of purple centres and he scored, untouched, (after running 70m) under the posts 5-7. Townsville from the restart again attacked and after a few fazes put a kick across the ground to the winger. The winger, at full pace, under pressure and on the half volley (only centre metres off the ground) scooped the ball up with his right hand, ran 20m and scored in the corner. This had the whole crowd clapping and cheering with the amount of skill shown 10-7. This seemed to awaken purple forwards who started to find some go forward. Just before half time, purple again scored through some excellent lead up work and some tiring defence from Townsville 10-14.
Brisbane made six changes just after half time and this really seem to lift Purple and affect Townsville. The No 6 and No 8 from Purple were everywhere and when they weren’t putting on crushing tackles, they were hitting the ball up and making 10-20m on each run. Townsville were a different team in the second half and seemed to tire and loose a bit of structure. Brisbane on the other hand became very confident and started taking easy yards up the middle of the pitch and eventually scored 3 converted tries. Townsville tried hard for the whole of the second half, but only challenging Purples try line on a few occasions.

Final Score Townsville 10 – Brisbane Purple 35

Unfortunately, the score doesn’t show how close the game was. Townsville had to travel and play the night before in Toowoomba and then travel back to Brisbane (4hrs round trip). It was a high skilled game and played well within the spirit of the game
