AUNZ Invitational XV v British & Irish Lions Saturday, 12 July 2025, 8:00pm Adelaide Oval

I initially thought so as well (and said as much at the time in the thread), but I saw later that Laumape stayed on. He definitely slotted in at first/second receiver a fair bit, however.
I thought Laumape had moved into 12, but iirc Havili also stayed on for much of the match (unfortunately).

Yep, both Laumape and Havili remained on - Campbell was playing on the wing, so one of the three had to have moved to 15, and I came to the conclusion that HMP was most likely. Doesn't really matter at the end of the day, as there was a fair bit of job sharing going on.

LOL@Captain Dave.

- Captain Dave drops the ball!
- Captain Dave gets turned over!
- Captain Dave gets turnstiled!
- Captain Dave tries the crosskick just like the kool kids do but he stuffs it up!
- Captain Dave inspires his team to ship 40 unanswered points!

It's Dave's world, we're just living in it.

TLDR; Dave = The Mark Mayerhofler of the 2020's.

Don't forget kicking the ball out on the full with one of his first touches leading directly to a Lions try

I think Schmidt has had plenty of showings to try and understand this Lions team and in particular their defensive approach and line speed.

My take is that there's two real ways to address it:

I think Beauden Barrett would have a field day grubbering through or chipping over the top, his vision and his touch off the boot with a chasing Will Jordan would really exploit it and keep them honest, not sure Donaldson/Lynagh/JOC (James O'Connor) have that in them however, but something to think about. You definitely would have to front foot it though, if you stand flat and go for it - no good.

The Wallabies NEED to adapt to the way the referee handles the line speed. If the referee lets the Lions set the line speed then you NEED to match as a unit. As someone pointed out, what makes it work for them is that they're all aligned, the refs see 5 guys up quick - what are the chances 5 of them would be offside? The ref sees one guy shoot far quicker than the rest of his team? Much easier call.

I do think this whole flick around the back and try exploit out wide is nice in principle, but you need some big units to just take some dirty carries in the middle to keep them honest first. That's what the Lions have done well too. My hope is that Bobby V, McReight, Wilson, Skelton, Williams, 7As (Allan Ala'alatoa) etc. can do a job here.

Despite my disappointments from this weekend, I'm still an optimistic and I'll always believe in the men in gold. Once again, Australian/South African Brits never, Tongan Wallabies forever. Les goh.

Saturday was a pretty trash match but the atmosphere and fun in the crowd at Adelaide Oval was excellent.

As a Victorian whose nanny state administrators deem full strength beer too dangerous to sell at sports events, the offering of a full bar including Guinness pints, a grassy hill beneath the scoreboard, and a few thousand pants-pissing drunk travelling rugby nutters was astonishing.

Couldn't tell you much about the game - partly because the sight lines from the flatter end of the stadium meant you couldn't see much outside of the 22m, partly because I imbibed too many said Guinnessii, but the event was great.
