Paul Roos hurt Grey

Paul Roos Gymnasium of Stellenbosch beat Grey College of Bloemfontein 9-3 on the Markötter Field in Stellenbosch on Saturday. It was a great occasion even though tarnished by the absence of several top players. It was the last FNB Classic Clash of the season.

There were nearly 20 000 spectators at the 1st XV match which was the highlight of the weekend which saw more than 500 Bloemfonteiners descend on Stellenbosch for various activities.

Grey, sadly, were without eight of their top players, seven of whom played for South Africa Under-18 who, watched by some 200 spectators, beat France in Wellington. The missing players were captain Pieter Rademan, fullback Riaan Britz, centre William Small-Smith and Piet Lindeque, flyhalf Johannes Goosen, locks Jean Cook and Carl Wepener. In addition their SA Schools hooker Baksteen van Heerden was injured. Paul Roos were without their captain Rick Schroeder, who seriously injured a knee at practice, fullback Craig Barry and tighthead Kelvin de Bruyn who were in the SA Under-18 group.

There had been heavy rains in the Cape and the field was heavy. Neither side managed to score a try though both came close, especially Grey in the last ten minutes or so as they fought to keep their famous record intact. Both teams defended with great bravery and concentration. The scoring belonged to the flyhalves. They did all the scoring, all of it in the first half - three penalties to Paul Roos (all in the first quarter of the match) and one to Grey in a match in which Grey were much penalised and suffered two yellow cards for repeated infringements. In a schools match! One was for a deliberate knock-on which prevented a try and could well have ended in a penalty try and one for repeated infringements. For a while Grey were reduced to 13 men but still held out.

The foundation for Paul Roos's victory was in their forwards. They dominated the line-outs and in the second half had the upper hand in the scrums, but it was particularly at the post-tackle contest that they did well with their two fetchers on the flanks.

Grey were generous in defeat refusing to make excuses for losing though they are not used to losing. Their last defeat was in 2005, also against Paul Roos. Paul Roos were jubilant in victory. As the final whistle went there was a touching moment when centre JP du Plessis, the star of the match, raced to Rick Schroeder, on crutches on the side line. The two embraced, shed tears of joy, said a prayer and then joined in the local happiness.

It's a real shame that this duup kid is going to be exposed to the awful 'mungo' culture that surrounds rugby league. It will corrupt him and pull him down. Sure, you have 'mungos' in your game as well but I'm sure it isn't anything like you get in league here. If he's a god fearing boy he's going to be in for a bit of a culture shock. Hopefully he can find some saffas or Dutch Reformed Church types in Sydney to mix with and keep him honest. I think you need to save him PB?

Ag well I think his culture and feet is cemented. Our Boer lot dont fall that easily in the traps of milk and honey. He sure will give it his best shot in being working hard but maybe you lot can get him into playing rugby again after his stunt.

Sneaky Aussies poaching our kids
Brisbane - Springbok rugby captain John Smit is concerned about the escalation in Australian poaching of young South African rugby talent.

In an interview with Brisbane's Courier Mail newspaper, Smit said he had noted with alarm the importing this week of two South African youngsters to Australia, 18-year-old centre JP du Plessis on a three year deal to Rugby League team the Sydney Roosters and 21-year-old lock Hendrik Roodt to the New South Wales Waratahs.

"South Africa produces a huge amount of schoolboy talent and the boys are being seen as good assets for rugby league and rugby union. And it is defintely picking up of late," Smit said.

"Rugby League is a new and major threat to our playing stocks and we have to be wary of this threat so that we keep our best players.

'JP du Plessis won't be the last South African joining the NRL'
South African has already produced three Wallabies in Tiaan Strauss, Clyde Rathbone and Dan Vickerman.

The recruiting agent for the Melbourne Storm, Greg Keenan, said he had travelled to Craven Week and had been very impressed with the talent.

"There were some amazing players there. I can tell you that JP du Plessis won't be the last South African joining the NRL (National Rugby League) ranks next year," Keenan promised
.

That's all well and good Keenan saying that, but the reality of signing young rugby players from a foreign country to play a game they've never seen before in Australia is a completely different thing. I doubt very much whether they'll be signing up too many. The risk factors are too high for both parties.

Well in the end young JP du Plessis decided to stay and will play next year for the Lions. His dad is on the Lions coaching staff and surely with Jake White involved there he is going to meet up with some fine talent coming through in SA rugby. SA Schoolboy players going to the Lions are : Garth April, JR Esterhuizen (Paarl Gym), Jaco Taute (playing CC for the Lions) & Gareth Topkins (Rondebosch Boys). Finaly it look like the Lions is starting to investigate in the right fashion, their youth structure and is sure they'll get the dividends.
