Aussie Player Exodus

The Ghost of Raelene

John Eales (66)
The irony of Makasini is he is from a rugby family and only started playing league when he was 13 or 14.

He played rugby exclusively up to that point.

He goes to my son's school. He enjoys playing both codes. Tigers just threw ridiculous cash at him which for a young Polynesian lad who is big on providing for the family, was impossible to say no to. He will have a crack at rugby at some point I believe.

Tbf, this season for Newington he was solid without being spectacular - last 2 seasons he was ridiculous. He had a calf injury early in the season and he was not as impactful as previous seasons. To his credit, Tigers asked him to stop school this year and play full time but he wanted to finish school and play one last season with New to try and win a GPS title.
Didn't know he was a Rugby kid prior to junior league. Good to know and have a pre built relationship over the game and not just pay.

Can never blame an athlete for taking the money. It's a job that has a short shelf life.

Yeah absolutely. Don't have any issue with kids who play both, and enjoy both, playing either really. Of course, being a rugby fan, I'd prefer them to only want to play rugby.

His family are rugby tragics, so hoping the pull to return happens down the track.

19 year old former Reds U18 THP Lehopa Leota debut'd for Racing 92 as their starting THP on the weekend.

The LHP from the same Reds U18 team Macarius Pereira is in a top 14 team also with Pau Academy, yet to debut.

Maybe we're too precious with our young players? The form of Lington Ieli at 20 YO in Super Rugby this year perhaps shows some of these young blokes are up to it and could be given opportunities here to keep them at home.

I'll cross post here Adam. I didn't actually have Pereira in my original data because all.rugby has him as a Kiwi.

I'm not really across the youngsters so I have to take all.rugby's interpretation of their nationality as gospel, and lets say it's sometimes a little curious.

So I probably have some non-Aussies in this list and also missed some. Appreciate any corrections.

I believe all rugby goes with place of birth as the nationality listing in just about all situations. It's a single country, so it's not an indicator of exclusive eligibility, but it's usually pretty correct in listing one country that a player is eligible for (or at least was before they were first capped).

I’ve been trying to keep tabs on these two. I hope they come back to Aus rugby (particularly leota!). I would even be ok with him being signed to another franchise.
I know racing 92 is a bit of a basket case but this is actually an unreal effort to force your way to the top at THP at 19!

I think Pereira is pretty keen on becoming an All Black, I’m not sure how old he was when he immigrated here.
Leota I’ve been told loves the Reds and saw that as a dream.
So much talent is flowing there particularly in the front row. Hasani Bloomfield is another one that is rumoured to have signed.

I think they need to be special players to be able to deal with the scrum side at such an early age. And they probably need to have played that position for a while. Lington appears to be that. And if you’ve ever seen leota you’d know he’s special. The kid is literally the best size for a THP since maybe Tupou.

Also, it will be interesting when Tupou gets to racing 92. I hope he gets in his ear and helps him get back to Aus rugby.
I think someone had a good idea on here to start selecting these boys for Australia A matches. And tbh if he’s being picked to start for top 14 he’s probably pretty capable of playing for Aus A.

These feels like a bit of a first, Bayonne have issued a statement to assure their fans that Reece Hodge is not on that good a contract:
