I think its more they are missing a quality play maker rather than another utility back. As HJ alluded, if O'Shea gets injured or his form is down, they have nowhere to turn. I thought that the #15 was one of the best for Aus, but he didn't look like he could create too much at 10.

Jack Maddocks?

who isn't supporting him. I thought its a mandatory 1 week ..if he doesn't play on Saturday, Aus have 1 specialist 10 in the squad. I feel sorry for JJH, and there was no drive down in the tackle, but seriously if my son was on the end of it, I wouldn't be too happy at all, and 1 week seems reasonable.

It they were to call another #10 into the squad, and I reckon that is rather unlikely (but possible), my money would be on it being Jack McGregor (NSW II) or Alex Horan (QLD 1).

Scots 3rds to Australian Schools: no one in QLD would care, not even Horan's old man!
Not saying he couldn't have done it but he made his choices, for which he is to be admired.

It's about wining isn't it? He doesn't qualify because he didn't play 1st or 2s. Yet grammar had 3 players who played GPS. Yet they lost scots who had jack. Id say he should have been able to have been selected.

Toby Rudolf should have been picked in Aust Schools team back in July.
He deserved selection through his enormous work rate, set piece skills and sheer will to win ...which was on show in all NSW 1's game at the Nationals. I didn't see another 2nd Rower come near him. He also plays 8 and 6 bloody well and played a number of Scots games this year at LHP. That's versatility.
He also captained his team to an undefeated season in 2014 & is the ideal player to have in your squad against NZ teams.

The whole selection process seems pretty farcical with 3 Qld players added into the squad late......then a further 2 Qld players (Hewat & Tualima) get added in for Rodda and Crichton who unfortunately dropped out with injuries.

If Qld players weren't "match fit" in time for the Aust Schools Titles in July because their GPS season hadn't started ....then its time the ARU stepped in and sorted the Schools season timing out. It seems Qld players have been "advantaged" by being regularly seen by Qld based selectors once their season got underway ....after the Aust Schools Champ's, however many NSW 1's and 2's players who had played better at the July Nationals continued their strong form down here ....but perhaps a little sight unseen.

I have no affiliation with Scots College but believe Rudolf & Porter should have been selected for Aust Schools......also Luke Lough from St Augustines.

You need to be careful taking a line through TSCs victory over grammar.
It's up to the school to put him forward - which would look a little odd and might expose some linen it did not want aired.
Everybody else trialled against their direct competition.
I suppose you support ringing in kids who don't play in the tournament - as was done in NSW schools u16s. That's a slippery slope to loss of all credibility.

What about James Day from Oakhill. He was the NSW II starting #10 but got concussed and didn't play again at Nationals. Has a good combo with Goddard

It is quite interesting to see people from across the tasman supporting our flyhalf but not the people who share a country with him.
CB Set couldn't agree more. Very disappointing from some on this forum
From what I could see he was beating himself up enough without having to cop it from the peanuts on here.

I believe there will be a judiciary hearing before Saturday's game. If I were the Aust officials I'd be citing a clean record for his school (assuming that's the case, which I think it is), the fact that there was no intent or malice in it (the boy was pretty much thrown in the air by a hard tackle and fell to ground badly - looked awful, and in no way excusing it, but if he landed on his bum rather than his melon, would the penalty have been a red or a yellow I wonder?), and he has basically already served a 1 match suspension given it happened in the first 3 minutes of the game. Also, informally, surely his humiliation on international TV is enough punishment?

Match report and tour update from Aust Schools Website (http://www.schoolsrugby.com.au/2014/news/australian-schools-go-new-zealand-barbarians/):

AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS GO DOWN TO NEW ZEALAND BARBARIANS

AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS GO DOWN TO NEW ZEALAND BARBARIANS (From the ARU media Unit)

The Australian Schools side has suffered a defeat to New Zealand Barbarians, going down 39-21 in Wellington on Tuesday.

The team was left to rue missed opportunities with a red card given to the Australian Schools flyhalf in the second minute, which proved to be a decisive moment in the match.

Australian Schools Head Coach Steve Philpotts was disappointed with the result.

“Losing our flyhalf so early in the match was not ideal for our game plan, so we had to adjust to that.

“We were a bit shell shocked in those first ten minutes but we remained patient and put ourselves in good positions to capitalise on the Barbarians’ errors.

“I am very proud of the way we tried to play for the full 70 minutes, considering we were a man down for most of the match.

“We will review this game and get ready for New Zealand Schools knowing that we can attack well when we create space.”

Australian Schools next match will be against New Zealand Schools on Saturday 4 October at 11.40am on FOX SPORTS 3 & 3HD.

THE MATCH
Australian Schools suffered an early blow with flyhalf Jordan Jackson-Hope red carded for a dangerous tackle in the second minute of the match.

Despite the early blow, Australian Schools registered the first points of the match through scrumhalf Harrison Goddard, who converted a penalty from 40 metres out to give the Australians a 3-0 lead.

New Zealand Barbarians’ first points came through flyhalf D’Angelo Leuila, who darted around the covering Australian defence to score underneath the posts, taking the score to 7-3 in favour of the host team.

A further penalty to the Barbarians side allowed them to extend their lead to 10-3 through the boot of D’Angelo Leuila.

Despite missing their playmaker, Australian Schools continued to throw around the ball as they looked to attack. They were rewarded with a second penalty, which Oakhill College’s Harrison Goddard converted.

However, New Zealand Barbarians were quick to extend their lead with a penalty from the sideline through D’Angelo Leuila, taking the score to 13-6.

The Australian Schools side patiently worked their way back into the first half through some tactical play which allowed Harrison Goddard to kick his third penalty.

The pace of the Barbarians and the extra man advantage began to take its toll as Losi Filipo scored a try in the corner to finish the first half with the score at 20-9 in favour of New Zealand Barbarians.

The second half started well for Australian Schools. The young team applied pressure to their opposite backs with great runs from Ned Yeomans and fullback Julian Fulivai, who combined well in the 47th minute to create a break in the midfield.

A patient effort from the Australian forwards created enough space for Fulivai to score a try underneath the posts.

A successful conversion by Goddard brought the scores to 20-16.

New Zealand Barbarians replied with a try through fullback Caleb Makene, which was followed by another try to New Zealand winger Losi Filipo, taking the score to 34-16.

The Australian Schools side refused to give in with 16 year old Harrison Goddard scoring off the back of an Australian scrum to bring the deficit to within two converted tries for Australian Schools, 34-21.

The tiring Australian defence was unable to hold off New Zealand in the final moments of the match with a late try ensuring New Zealand’s domination on the scoreboard, taking the final score to 39-21.

New Zealand Barbarians 39 (tries D’Angelo Leuila, Losi Filipo (2), Caleb Makene, Paripari Parkinson cons; D’Angelo Leuila (4) pens; D’Angelo Leuila (2)) defeated Australian Schools 21 (tries; Julian Fulivai, Harrison Goddard cons; Harrison Goddard pens; Harrison Goddard (3))

Fox played well in patches, but was a bit of a spectator here and there (might have been fitness or form) but has seemingly stepped up and is now playing for Australia. Good on the

Judging from the first half of today's game I would say fitness

Slightly incorrect:
The Colts scoresheets record Craig as starting hooker for Eastwood Colts 1 in round 4, and coming off the bench in Colts 1 in rounds 16, and round 18 (position unknown). (Colts 1 = 1 Start, 2 Bench). He started in Colts 2 as #6 in round 16 vs Penrith, #2 in round 18 vs Rats and in two finals games v Manly and Uni, and off the bench in Round 17. (Colts 2 = 4 Starts, 1 Bench). He started round 17 in Colts 3 as LHP. (Colts 3 = 1 Start)

Hugh, great stuff as usual with the facts! Sounds about right. Craig missed a number of Colts games due to injury (several teeth knocked half out = 2 weeks, fractured eye socket with surgery = 6 weeks), and therefore returning to play in lower grades. As colts 1s didn't make the finals, he qualified for the 2s finals campaign. The Colties coaches at Eastwood also gave him several weeks off during lead up to Nationals due to heavy training for school and reps + HSC trials (oops, did someone say the dirty word "study"!).

^^^ Reasons have been discussed elsewhere.

Believe the lad and his folks decided that he attended School to learn some stuff, and not to spend <insert number of hours> in the gym or at team training each school week as part of the School 1st and 2nd XV programme. The "powers that be" at his school only wanted kids who were prepared to commit to <insert number of hours> each week to the rugby programme in their 1st and 2nd XV squad. Therefore the kid happily played down in the school 3rd XV for most of the year.

Reasonably talented player by all accounts.

I'm pretty sure the school took away his opportunity to play 3rd (apparently too good) so he stopped playing rugby all together..

The Australian Schools team will have their proverbial backs against the wall against this strong NZ Schools line-up.

Watch out for Rieko Ioane of Auckland Grammar. A strong centre who is actually the younger brother of Akira Ioane (a NZ Schools representative in 2013 and now All Black Sevens representative). He captained the side against Fiji today and scored a strong double in the process.

Word has it that this lad has signed (or is expected to sign) a contract that will see him join the Blues in 2016. The deal is in the vicinity of NZ$100,000. Not bad a bad pay day for someone his age! Comes from good rugby stock as the dad was a former Manu Samoa representative.
