Not sure I follow - so if you are injured and can't complete the program at Riverview - say the final when NSW 2 d NSW 1 - you should
be selected over the top of those who did play? There are, possibly, a very small no. of absolute stand out players who could do this, but the vast majority would surely have to play out the tournament to be selected?

I'm not sure what you're not following? Obviously if two players are on the same level and one doesn't compete in a final game it's more likely the player who competes will be selected. However, I watched the majority of games at Riverview and, aside from Luke Rixon, Mohi was the form winger of the tournament, especially being the leading try scorer behind a NSW I pack that weren't performing as well as expected. Indeed, many onlookers and GAGR pundits had him as one of the few from NSW I definitively pencilled into AUS Schools.

The reason, therefore, that I compared Reilly to Mohi was simply to illustrate that it's not an uncommon phenomenon in the world of schoolboy rugby that a player is denied selection because of an untimely injury/illness that rules them out of a trial game even though past performance would indicate they are more than capable of playing in a blue, gold or whatever colour representative jersey it may be.

It's not a denied selection if you are injured and can't continue to compete in the tournament that selectors are selecting from. It's bad luck/life/the rub of the green. Otherwise where does it leave selectors - do they need to follow up with physios/specialist to see if the boy who is injured is likely to be fit to train for /play at the next match? They select what's in front of them and seemingly fit to play in the next match.

I agree it's the rub of the green to an extent but as you said previously there are a small number of stand out players who can be selected despite injury. In the case of both Mohi and Reilly I count them as being in the this small number of players. Perhaps, from what you saw in last year's tournament and Reilly's performances at the school level you disagree about there inclusion in this 'small group of standouts'. Any such disagreement, however is unlikely to be resolved as it is largely subjective and given this is a relatively minor issue I don't see much point in filling the thread with anymore pointless back and forth.

Unfortunately for Mohi last season, there was a glut of good wingers and with him not playing in the Final because of injury, was probably enough to sway the selectors towards other players and not necessarily away from him. He missed out on a final chance to showcase his talents but NSW1s were convincingly beaten in the Final so he may not have seen much ball anyway.

Who knows what reasons the Selectors had to omit him.

It was extremely unlucky for him because he was in most tipsters teams, but the tipsters dont select the teams. And selections can be influenced by State politics.

But where Mohi was really unlucky was when he wasn't called up to replace an injured player for the Barbarians against Tonga. He should have been there.

Instead, another player who shortly after went to league, was called up.
Mohi has not only stuck with rugby since and made an appearance for NSW U20s, but was the better player.

Some think that player was only selected to entice him to stick with rugby so he wouldnt go to league but it obviously didnt work.

So the selectors made a big mistake not choosing Mohi as a replacement for the Barbarians game over the other player who is now playing league.

His was one of many selection hard luck stories to emerge over the years. There will be more.

In addition to the 5 you mentioned - Yr 11 (or 17) as far as I know:

Douglas (is 17 not certain yr 11)
Freeman
Hopoate
Reimer
Ilias

Bell (prop)
Bremner
Easy
Bell (centre)
Harris (as for Douglas)
Wilson (as for Douglas)

Would just like to point out that Albert Hopoate has just turned 16 years old.
So has done very well to get into NSW 1, playing up TWO years

I do believe that 1 selection for Aus Schoolboys is not made at the conclusion of the tournament. 1 position left open and may include a player unable to trial.

Last year Harry Wilson went up to Aus from Barbarians and Brown came in.

Great news for Harry.

Is it confirmed he is the only NSW player? How does he know?

As far as I'm aware, it was an official from Combined States who informed Harry he was the only NSW player from CHS selected this year, during the phone call yesterday.

That's a change from last year, seems like a smart way to do the selection. . Gives any injured. Player a second chance.

Great game today between Vic Schoolboys and NWSJRU U18. The Vics start off the strong with a couple of quick tries, and scoring 4 tries with one conversion in the first half. NSW are kept to nil. NSW come back strong second half scoring three tries. Vics were able to make a late surge to score three tries, no conversions. Final Score Vic Schoolboys 37-17 NSWJRU U18.
