The Boss man has been cited. Just looked at the incidents and honestly can't see how he'll cop a suspension but you never know.

To put this in perspective: Bakkies Botha still out, reports are that Rossouw won't be fit, and if Matfield is suspended the Bulls are left with Flip vd Merwe (who was excellent against the Brumbies) and Fudge Mabetha (lightweight). They have sent a lock on loan to Durban - Steenkamp. May rue that decision now. Bulls could be taking on the Tahs with a fourth or fifth best lock combo.

Bulls captain Victor Matfield has been cited for foul play in Saturday’s win over the Brumbies.
Matfield was cited under Law 10.4 (a) for striking Brumbies flanker Rocky Elsom around the head area in the 16th minute of the match. The Springbok lock was also cited under Law 10.4 (k) for charging into a ruck without binding onto another player.

The hearing will take place on Monday at 12pm at Loftus Versfeld. If Matfield is found guilty, he will miss the next match against the Waratahs.

Now they are going to cite every second player entering rucks? Anyway I cant see the Brutes losing this one, even without Matfield they'll have the stock to overpower the Tahs. Mocve Wanneburg to lock and let lose Kuhn & Stegman as a combo on the Tahs.

Matfield not guilty
Mon, 22 Feb 2010 12:27

Bulls lock Victor Matfield has been found 'not guilty' on a foul play charge. He is free to play against the Waratahs on in a Super 14 Round Three match on Saturday.

Matfield appeared before a SANZAR judicial committee on Monday, after being cited for foul play following his team's impressive 50-32 Super 14 win over the Brumbies in Pretoria at the weekend.

Matfield was cited under Law 10.4 (a) for striking Brumbies flank Rocky Elsom around the head area in the 16th minute of the match.

The Bulls lock was also cited under Law 10.4 (k) for charging into a ruck without binding onto another player.

He was cleared on both charges at the hearing at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

Wouldn't matter if he wasn't playing. Judging by the game against the Stormers, this Tahs team couldn't pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the sole.

Yeah, and fixing the current problems the Tahs have is fucking hard on a road trip to SA. Really can't see it happening when they've shown practically nothing in the first two games. This is why I picked the Stormers (but completely fluffed the margin, dumb Tahs) - you can't fix that many problems in the week that you are travelling to SA. Hopefully the Tahs can just get through this trip and work on it at home.

The question is, how much will the Bulls win by? I'm hoping the Tahs keep it close, but suspect they'll fade in the last 20 like the Brumbies.

Not that I enjoy seeing the Waratahs go bad or anything like that.. ;), but I reckon they are likely to get plenty put on them this weekend. Bloody hard to turn it around on a SA roadtrip, like Ash said. Shades of 2002 on the road - anyone?? :fishing

45+. That's my guess. By which I mean Ruck and Maul turnovers for the Bulls. The score might be higher. Expect to see at least one of the 'Tahs forwards actually run away at some point. If this game doesn't provide incentive for Burgess to clear the ball quickly, then its a lost cause.

I predict Phil Waugh getting in a jersey wrestle with someone but not throwing a punch and he will bleed at some stage. Can't see the Tahs winning after watching the Bulls the last 2 games

Great news for the Bulls.

Matfield cleared. Rossouw will be fit to partner him at lock (although I would be tempeted to play the young vd Merwe if I were the coach - he was brilliant). Spies will also be fit.

Dewald Potgieter will return from injury to replace Wannenburg and adds a lot more pace and he is the best cover tackler in SA in my book after (an in-form) Schalk Burger.

Moving on from 'how much will the Bulls win by'...

What would the Waratahs have to do differently in order to win this one?

Quite a lot, is the short answer, but I don't like the idea of throwing my hands in the air and accepting that the Bulls are unstoppable and the Waratahs irredeemable.

There are plenty of things the Waratahs need to attend to, no matter who they are playing, the main ones being (again):

-selection: any chance we'll see a specialist 13 this season? I really have nothing against Carter, but he is not playing in his best position (insert bench joke here)
-intensity: get some soon
-forwards: solid set plays, varied tactics ie maul, pick and drive, pop balls as the defence becomes more fractured (essentially the best stuff from last season), FAST BALL AT ALL TIMES. There are some very strong ball runners in the pack (Palu, TPN, Mowen, and Mumm when he is back) so it would be nice if they did the bulk of the 'hit ups' with the others supporting and securing possession-which is not to say the others should never run the ball as with quick ball everyone needs to be prepared, just that I'd prefer to see Waugh in the middle of rucks and mauls and Palu charging onto the ball with support close behind. What I really don't want to see Baxter taking a casual run one off the ruck and getting smashed because he is all alone, the defence have been set and ready for a long time, and he really doesn't fancy a run anyway.
-Burgess: Pass fast to Barnes or Beale. If you want to run or kick, do that fast too. If there is no one to pass to - pick it up and run (hopefully the forwards will be ashamed of themselves enough to back you up)
-backs: Don't kick away possession. If you must kick, please do it for a good reason ("I couldn't think of anything better to do" is not a good reason) such as the opposition defence being up too fast, opposition fullback or wingers being out of position. Be inventive - Beale was a creative and exciting player once upon a time and I believe he still can be if given the OK. Someone has to cut inside or straighten up the attack if there is going to be any lateral movement. Get Turner and Mitchell involved as much as possible (if you get ignored, come looking for the ball boys - I don't care if you have to clear Burgess out of our own ruck). Small steps though - how about a clever move off a scrum?
-coach: take the crap players off, leave the good players on. If you have more crap players than reserves, take them off in order of crapness. If you have it in you, get them fired up and let them play.

The next issue is finding areas in the Bulls' play that might be vulnerable.
.
um
.
.
-their defence can't be all that great as they have let in a few tries
-when the Brumbies pressured them they did melt away a bit, and they did give away plenty of penalties
-Waugh could do a rabid dog impersonation on Steyn (pressure him, not bite him)
-the Bulls scrum is solid, but the Tahs have it in them to put pressure on there

I think the Tahs will step up
They always lift a gear when they're up against it. Bulls by 9 but it won't be easy for them

If the Tahs of the past 2 weeks turn up I'll be turning off the tv. Not going to put myself through that again

Waugh to the bench is a big call. Even if he isn't the best player for the position, dropping the captain could have a detrimental effect (who else is a real leader there?). I wouldn't go that far, but I like the rest of your line up.

Whatever the team, the way they approach the game will be the telling factor.

I would like to see Hoiles dropped as well although the new rules should suit him in theory.

Right now I don't think that Tom Carter is the Tahs problem. The combination between 9 and 10 is poor, then 10 is insanely deep and passes to a very shallow 12 on the rare occasion he doesn't kick, and their ruck technique is poor. They are also giving away too many penalties, when being well disciplined had been an important hall mark. Inside backs are not getting good front foot ball out, and that is a problem of the forwards, 9 and 10.

Quote from Rupert Guinness in today's SMH

... the Waratahs are expected to field the same 22-man squad that lost to the Stormers at Newlands. Hickey has indicated he is hesitant to change his line-up.

Still no Horne. Hickey hesitant to change. Oh thats right Chris, I forgot, everything's going so well at the moment. FFS!!

Memberships still open to the FHC. I think this might generate a few more applications.
