CAS Rugby 2025

Ah, OK. But here's the thing: in recent years, the CAS-GPS game has quite often been played on a damp midweek night under indifferent lighting (eg at Knox). Should we tell the selectors not to pick Waverley players for games like that because they're consistently terrible in those conditions?
100% agree
Got to play what's in front of you.
Nobody should make any excuses and blame the lighting, this isn't cricket - it was 2 teams out there, same conditions for both.
Congrats to Trinity on the win.

Trinity 4th XV had to play sydney grammar as waverly didnt have the depth in there so called unbeatable rugby program. Not sure why you are questioning Trinity’s depth.
Hi mate
Thanks for the reply
Below are the results for Waverley
You will see why I question Trinity's depth:
Waverley 4ths played Sydney Boys 1sts and 5ths played the 2nds, C's in 16's must have had a terrific game vs the Trinity C's with a soccer score and the D's in 13's and 14's played Trinity C's.
I want to see more rugby played at schools and hope that not only Trinity but other schools push the program.

Not sure how i think about that, obviously, would be a lot of unnecessary effort and probably money to get some sort of judictory into CAS and for such a short season wouldnt be worth it, but from my view, headmasters may not hand out rugby related suspensions (and instead opt to give a school based detention or something of the other) to student sent off as it could throw the teams season into jepordy, whereas a non bias offical would give a just penalty to the student. Not sure if im right here but just something to think about.

I understand your point, and you're right that setting up a formal judiciary process for a short school sports season could be a lot of effort and may not seem worthwhile. However, relying only on schools to hand out consequences can lead to inconsistent outcomes. One school might give a detention while another might suspend a player for the same offence, which could create an unfair situation.

Having an independent and unbiased official or panel to review serious incidents could help ensure that penalties are consistent and based on the actual incident, rather than the school’s priorities or the impact on the team. This would promote fairness and reinforce the idea that discipline is about upholding the integrity of the sport, not protecting a team's success.

It’s definitely something worth thinking about, especially as school sports continue to become more competitive.

Game Report: Aloys vs Cranbrook (7–64)

Cranbrook dominated the scoreboard in a crushing 64–7 win over Aloys, but the match wasn't without controversy. From the opening whistle, the officiating raised eyebrows, with a string of one-sided calls that heavily favoured Cranbrook. Aloys struggled to build momentum as several promising plays were halted by questionable penalties. Despite the lopsided result, Aloys showed grit under pressure and moments of strong defence, but the biased refereeing made it an uphill battle from the start.

The future of rugby at St Aloysius is surely a major concern. Beaten convincingly by a Cranbrook 1st XV team yesterday with three probable starting forwards out injured. Also, Cranbrook who are pretty weak through the junior years only lost the 14As. The CAS comp need a competitive Alo's but the program looks to be pretty shaky.

Yeah, cranbrooks dominant prop and hooker both out yet cranbrook dominated at the scrum, what could CAS do, do you think it would be worth doing what GPS does and dropping the Aloys 1s to the CAS 2nd XV competition, they will be very competititve in those matchups making it better for everyone involved.

I think that would be a terrible shame and would be the end for rugby at Alo's. At least with new format they will finish the season with three potential reasonable match ups with ISA schools like Kinross & Pius. However, I fear they will struggle to get within 50 points in their coming CAS games.

Absolutely nothing to do with the refereeing. Cranbrook left plenty of points out there. Could easily been 80 point win.

yeah, CAS clearly not suiting them, they wouldnt be too bad in ISA and yeah should be good for them at the end of the year. The thing that stood out to me watching yesterday was there pack was serverley undersized, being dominated through the middle and making it very hard for them to find any means of footing.

Aloys rugby might go the way of Grammar if they are dropped. Has there been any significant demographic changes leading to the current drought in results.
I think u may find the school focus on exam results over the past 10 years has seen an influx of students with less sporting interests. Having said that I believe the year 10, 9 and 8 age groups appear to have some talent and are being nurtured closely to ensure competitiveness in the next few years. Perhaps some well considered scholarships should be offered to encourage some rugny talent into the programme. Much like the rest of CAS appear to have at their disposal.

After watching the Cranbrook aloys game, I can confidently say that they have a genuine shot at the CAS title. their challenge is playing the full game as the dominant side rather than 1 half. We've seen this play out against Newington where Cranbrook were the better side in the first half and then confidently beaten in the second, And now again at Alo's with the second half having double the points scored then in the first on cranbooks end. if they can string together a full 70 minutes of this kind of quality they can smash even the best CAS teams.

A great performance from cranbooks flanker Aymeric Schmidt who is consistently belting blokes in defence and running the ball hard. Cranbrooks 13 has also consistently put in performances with a good try against newington and again 2 against aloys with one being punched out over the line which would have been his hatrick.

Cranbrook have something about them this year,
