Interesting that 5 of the 6 most highly ranked players for the Wallabies in the Ranker on the RHS menu are forwards

Rucks and Mauls

commentary on Canal 5 was superb.

who did you get?
some know nothing pom and a guest kiwi?
Not sure who they were....two very average Poms! Couldn't have been much worse if they tried.
Clearly no one told them they were being broadcast in Oz.
Love to know who they were. Ex players?

i think i know who you mean. i can't place his name because i haven't watched "English language" rugby tv from France for several years, but there was a terrible pom caller on ESPN. he was a pom bloke who was a dreadful caller - however, have no sense of paranoia; he was very democratic, being totally incompetent about all teams and their players. he used to bring in a guest for most games - usually a kiwi contracted player in France who had time off for whatever reason. the guests were dreadful, too.

maybe Lee Grant will see this and name the caller for us?

Is it Nigel Starmer-Smith? And the Kiwi fella might be Willie Lose. Morgan Turinui does a few games with him.

I have just seen this.

Are you saying that ESPN broadcast the Fra v Aus game? Obviously you saw this overseas because ESPN doesn't have the rights in Oz - nor in the UK where Sky Sports has them (I think).

Maybe ESPN, where you are, used the Eurosports commentator Robbie Nock, who commentates the Top 14 games for Eurosports in Oz and has for yonks.

He is not a Pom - he is Welsh.

He is the worst commentator in the world but one of the most likeable. I wouldn't mind $10 for every time he says "um" and "err" in a game.

He uses Paris-based players as co-commentators in the Top 14 and has featured David Lyons a lot this year because he hasn't played yet. Games away from Paris they usually do from the Paris studio but sometimes they go on the road.

The Kiwi you mentioned - or at least one that he used a lot - was Simon Mannix who was backs' coach for Racing a couple of years ago, not a current player (though he played a test for the All Blacks, back in the day). He is now with Pau in the Pro D2 after being at Munster.

He was an outstanding co-commentator.

Likeable he may be and I can put up with the ums BUT.. he wouldn't know a rule book if he fell over it. I reckon I would disagree with about a third of his rule interpretations every game (not setting myself up as an authority, just a keen fan). He's likeable because when a French referee makes a howler (at least one per half) he just shrugs his shoulders and gets on with the game.

that's the bloke. Robbie Nock. seems a very nice bloke indeed. but hopeless caller. i didn't think much of most of his commentators but Mehrtens was usually good for a laugh. yep. Simon Mannix was very good.

to me, "caller" is the bloke who tells us what we can see on the screen - such as who has the ball and who wins a lineout. "commentator", to me, is the bloke who tells why things happen and how good are the things we see.

a few years back, when i had time on my hands in a shitty job, i watched a helluva lot of Robbie Nock and Co on my excellent satellite service. i don't watch much French rugby now, as i am too busy. i still watch most of the big games and those featuring interesting Australians (that's how i know how Tomani and Mowen are going).

you, being a Mod, will surely know that i can't tell you, here on GAGR, how i watch French club rugby in HD in my own room. btw, it's shown on almost every half decent sports bar outside Australia. btw, is Australia still devoid of real sports bars?

i watched the France v Australia live on French TV (Canal5) with French commentary. over the years, i tired of the pom and Australian callers' and commentators' appalling lack of understanding the game, of knowing the Laws and of knowing anything about the French players. this has become my standard now, as Canal 5 plays all French team tests live.

i hope that clarifies

cheers

remember how and why TSF went from being a top site to rubbish?
