One of the best articles I've read recently on the state of the nation. He's right, each time I go home I'm struck by how amazingly well things are going, and just how affluent we are, particularly compared to the rest of the world....and how much whinging goes on about the economy.

On the whole a fair article. I wonder if author still has a $500k mortgage to worry about. Interesting that he believes the high costs of taxi is a function of the cost of petrol - where I live cost of petrol is the same as Australia yet for comparable travel times taxis are a third the cost. Hmmmm - still too many protected interests in Australia that keep cost of everything rising - banks, supermarkets, etc

Cheers to the blokes behind this thread, really is a joy to find some intelligent journalism after years of searching. One of the most under-rated G&GR threads IMO.

Provides some great light reading :)

GAME OVER

In 2009, Outside readers met Colton Harris-Moore, a smart, slippery teenager who became notorious for stealing cars, boats, and planes in the Pacific Northwest. The climax came a year later, when Harris-Moore swiped a small plane in Indiana, landed in the Bahamas, and vanished. As BOB FRIEL reports in this excerpt from his new book, The Barefoot Bandit, the ensuing manhunt had a strange sort of island charm—but got deadly serious in a hurry.
