Out of interest - what schools in Newcastle play rugby? or is it just the clubs that generate the colts players?

No schools participate in the weekly Hunter Rugby competition in both seniors and juniors.

However a local school competition organised by Hunter Rugby takes place every year for about a month.

The Steve Merrick Cup (boys) and Morgan & Stewart Cup (girls).

ok great - thats a decent list. Though it does include Tamworth and Gosford.
The key to the growth of the game in Aus lies with public high schools. ( and primary).

It has grown a lot.
Started in 2019 with 8 schools and playing 10-a-side.
Eventually grew to 12-a-side, now at XVs.

15 Schools participated in 2024. So solid growth.

Hunter Rugby Round 2 Results:

Round two kicked off on Friday with Merewether hosting Wanderers for their annual ANZAC day matchup in Premier and Womens XV.

Premier 1:

Merewether took and early lead over Wanderers, the game got close around the 50' mark but Merewether too good on the day.
Close first 15' in Maitland vs Beaches, but the Maitlands experience ran away with it.
University got out to an early lead, but Hamilton fought back into it making it 12-17 at half-time. University ran away with the last 10 minutes.

Big Crowd for the annual Merewether vs Wanderers ANZAC fixture:

Merewether vs Wanderers do an ANZAC derby match every year, with the venue switching between Townson Oval (Merewether) and No.2 Sportsground (Wanderers). It is usually the biggest crowd, other than the Grand Final every year.

Hunter Rugby has released the Friday Night 4s draw now, and teams involved.

Teams:

This means Wanderers, University, Beaches, Merewether and Hamilton all have 4 men grades.
Maitland have put two teams in 4s, meaning they have 5 mens grades.
Medowie and Cooks Hill have two mens grades (Suburban and 4s).
