NSW AAGPS 2025 (banter and commentary)

Reporting from the Bridge.

Riverview played a strong game, looking confident and connected when moving the ball. They also tore the Shore scrums apart, and the lineouts. Shore is definitely missing the Galtitude in the lineouts, mis-executing plenty of lineouts this evening, luckily this is an area that can definitely be improved over the season.

In the first half, the Shore boys played a winning game of football, definitely dominating the Riverview side. The defensive efforts were outstanding, holding SIC out on their own line, in those moments of 'surely they should score here'. Shore looked in control of the game in the first half, despite losing Stirling and Armati in his first game back and playing a brilliant half.

However, the standard dropped. This is a common theme this season. The game just gets away from Shore, we saw it against Joeys, we saw it to a certain extent against New, we saw it today. If Shore held onto their standard in the last 20-25 minutes against Joeys, there was not a single thing stopping them from coming out on top. Exactly same thing today - they were even 1 try up beforehand. If they can hold onto the game in the last 1/3rd of the match, they are going to be winning matches. I don't think 20+ gives it the evenness of much of the game, maybe 7.

Unfortunately, there were plenty of mistakes & errors from Shore (although almost matched by SIC), serving View a bit of a clean sheet. View copped a fair red for a high tackle (timestamp 01:10:43 if you really care), and I thought it was going to be a momentum push for Shore, but it seemed to be the exact opposite, Riverview ran circles. Even though Shore had sparks of brilliance, it wasn't enough unfortunately.

One of those sparks was Jarret (1). I though he ran hard and tackled harder. He was in almost every tackle, sending plenty of boys back on their bums. Also Clout (8), who ran with some ferocity that knocked the wind out of many and ate many more metres post contact. Of course, Callaghan was almost untouchable at 10, symbiotically appreciating Robertson's defensive effort in return from the 2XV.

E MOM: Jarret HM: Clout, Sidwell, Robertson
I MOM: Reich HM: Plamondon, Lenehan, Folkes - Grover didn't play his best I don't think.

Onwards to the Kingdom...

Another thing that was critical in View vs Shore: Lineouts

I think Shore may have won 2/10 of the lineouts they were given.

Reich was an absolute menace at lineout time and im sure Ed Craig will be having none of that. The Shore lineout is historically the strongest. Complete disruption from the viewmen today.

Credit to L.Sidwell - He must've had 50+ carries.

Littler easily one of the more underrated players in the comp at the moment.

Guess having four back rowers who don’t jump consistently is not helpful. But also over throws from both 1/2s. Plenty of drills next week.

The View forwards are easily the most underrated of the comp. A solid ball running, hard scrumming front row with Osbourne an unheralded standout. Great jumpers in Reich and Spora who also operate well outside the set piece along with two turnover winning “no 7” roles in Dempsey and Perkins.

The tight five has outmatched every opponent this year with the possible exception of New where it was quite even.

What has frustrated the pack is the seeming lack of will of the refs to permit actual scrummaging in the comp. Lots of penalties for angling, early engagement or whatever when absolutely splintering opposition scrums. The penalty or short arm often goes the other way.

No wonder our country sucks at the scrums if this is how the kids are brought up.

A bunch of relative no names in the backs with the possible exception of Grover, Plamondon and Scarr who are definite dark horses this year if they can overcome their Joeys nemesis (never a given) and play good return home matches against Kings and New and avoid a potential banana peel away at Scots.

A lot still needs to go their way, but they play like a side with a lot of belief as demonstrated today putting a 15 man Shore school to the sword while playing 50 odd minutes with 14 men.

Also worth mentioning that they are the only side in the comp sans imports, with zero come lately leaguies, or stars from warmer climes, big name or otherwise. A team worth admiring in the brave new semi pro era of AAGPS rugby.

Their weakness? Depth, which also flows from no imports. A key injury or two and it will be uphill for them.

Agreed the View forwards have repeatedly carried strong and challenge the line out have performed solidly. Marshalled by a 9 who is class they ran away with it. Shore have some challenges in the front row with injuries, backs looked more energised with JC at 10 (who impactful with less space - making me wonder what he would have injected from 15…...) however the back line looked under sized and error ridden when they forced their hands even though a man up watch the game back and see they missed the solid defence of the injured winger Dalemdia (sp).

Kings capitalised on the weaker new forward pack with 3 key injuries in Sheck, Simmons and the big no 5, which gave them easy metres and confidence to defend in wider areas, which made it very difficult for new to attack. Gonna be a tight race for the trophy.

Any insight into what happened in Stanmore?

I understand the dragon was slain... Why? Plenty of chat about how Newington being dominant and by far the season favourites, has Kings taken their place or is it just a sign of an even steven season?
I watched this game on streamer, and from what i saw, New's injury rattled forward pack was outmuscled by a strong Kings pack.

You’d have to fit him in though he is already lost to league so I don’t know what the policy is there.

A fine Hunter Sports High/Shore product.

He was heroic today, although at times wanted to do it all himself. Would probably appreciate the space more at 15 I dare say.

6 tries to 3 for a team away, not sure what the ref did to make that one happen buddy.

if we watch the streamer footage a clear punch from the newo sub prop is seen so he missed that call
