NSW Waratahs 2026

This is true, but my understanding from a connected source is that ARU were lowballing/delaying resigning all these players because the writing was on the wall re: the rebels.... understandable, but also caused a few players to move who would have been happy to stay with a comparable offer.
This is tinfoil hat talk... delaying, lowballing.. sneaky games.. do you have any actual proof? or is it just what you think.. or is another, chat with a player who cannot be named

Feel free to go play for your country in the international window. We won't be paying you during any weeks you join the squad though......(Said in a French accent)

The Ghost of Raelene

I suspect we’ll see him in Wallaby gold Cyclo
I don't.

I reckon Les Kiss has been around long enough as a player and coach to be a good judge of a bloke and where he's at. They'll keep tabs on him and may mention his name from time to time to see if it sparks something but TT seems content and that never results in physical performance .

The player and potential is there but the drive is gone. He can get up for bursts but the sustained effort isn't there and that comes from between the ears.

Ben O'Donnell was at the Brumbies this year.

I'd argue you upgraded at prop with Fotuaika, Alatini and Ieli.

Swain was a loss but it allowed you to promote Lachlan Hooper.

Brown wasn't that much of a loss but you've also added Tualima to replace him.

Tua was certainly a loss but you got Feliuai from the Rebels.
You are missing the point a little BH. The question was about the distribution of the Rebels players and what effect that might have on the Brumbies success this year had the five players who went to the Tahs been available to them. I also made the point that I have no criticism of the Brumbies approach to fill a number of gaps from the Acadamy. It seems that almost every year three or four Acadamy players are promoted to the main squad, and there have been some very good ones among them. Ieli is the latest example.from those you mentioned. An outstanding prospect at such a young age for a prop.

Of the others you mention, BOD, Hooper and Alatini didn't play game all year. Fotuaika only came in late as an injury replacement. I expect the first three to play big parts in future competitions but none of them contributed on the playing field this year.

Incidentally, Jahrome Brown was Wallaby eligible from November last year IIRC.

Thinking back a lot of these signatures/negotiations happened before Brumbies agreed to RA takeover, which occurred because the Brumbies were facing potential administration given the financial state. So it's entirely possible Brumbies weren't in a financial position to negotiate or make offers until that issue was resolved anyway.

Remember RA couldn't force players to go a team, it had to all be agreed by the players, and mostly there would have been no salary/extra payments on the table to convince players that (eg) Canberra was a better option than Sydney.

RA were in control of contracting at the Tahs too, but not at the Brumbies, so could make the decisions they needed to clear the spaces for the Rebels players where they needed to. RA also can't grant more money to one Super Rugby licence holder over another, so couldn't do financial deals that way either

This is frequently completely forgotten. Or ignored. If a club wants these players it is incumbent on the club to attract them. It is nonsense to blame another party (eg RA) for failing to allocate. Do the work in the first instance for goodness sake.
