This has flown under the radar somewhat with the start of SupeRugby upon us.

There will be 3 games in Australia over the weekend, so get out and see some up and comers if you can.

The IRB Pacific Rugby Cup kicks off on February 24 when Fiji Warriors, Samoa A and Tonga A travel to Australia for the first round of matches against Super Rugby development opposition.
Funded by the IRB, the key development competition proved to be a hit in 2011 as the very best up and coming locally-based players from the Islands had the opportunity to pit themselves against the next generation of Super Rugby stars in Australia and New Zealand in a new-look tournament.
The successful three-leg format is retained with the first hosted in Australia, the second in New Zealand and the third to be held later in the year in the Pacific Islands.
The Australia leg comprises nine matches played from February 24 to March 5 between the Islanders and Australia based teams the Brumby Runners, the Junior Waratahs and Queensland A.
Holders Fiji Warriors, Samoa A and Tonga A then travel to New Zealand for the second round of nine matches from March 9-19, where they face, in a change from last year, all five of the New Zealand Super Rugby development teams the Crusader Knights, Chiefs Development, Hurricanes Development, Highlanders Development and Blues Development teams.

Below are the matches to be played in Australia:
Fri 24 Feb 12
Brumby Runners v Samoa A Canberra Stadium, Canberra 17:05
Sun 26 Feb 12 Junior Waratahs v Tonga A Foreshaw Rugby Park, Sydney 15:00
Sun 26 Feb 12 Queensland A v Fiji Warriors Ballymore, Brisbane 18:00

Round 2
Wed 29 Feb 12 Brumby Runners v Fiji Warriors Seiffert Oval Queanbeyan 18:30
Thurs 1 Mar 12 Junior Waratahs v Samoa A Foreshaw Rugby Park, Sydney 15:00
Thurs 1 Mar 12 Queensland A v Tonga A Ballymore, Brisbane 18:00

I don't mind rugby at Foreshaw park but is there a reason it's become popular for the Academy and the Pacific cup games?

Samoa A 30 - 24 Brumby Runners

Upset to say the least especially after Samoa A being thumped in their previous two games.

I saw about 50 minutes of this match off and on and when I got there Samoa A were comfortably in front. The ACT XV then got back into the game on the back of some ill discipline from Samoa with back to back penalties at times and some talking to from the referee. The match was played in around 30° of heat so both teams struggled on that front.

Samoa A were very physical with a few bone rattling tackles but may need to control that aggression to avoid giving other teams key field position.

Found this on the Samoan Rugby Union website...

Samoa A wins First PRC Match Samoa A’s official campaign for the Pacific Rugby Cup Championship title kicked off with a well deserved win over the Brumby Runners on Friday at Canberra Stadium Australia.

Samoa A 30 to Brumby’s 24, full time score is a boost to the boys confidence as the tournament starts to roll in.

Speaking from Australia, Head Coach Fepuleai Selefuti Patu is pleased with the result adding it was a very physical contest and the boys fronted up well “The boys played with their hearts out the last two warm up games gave us an excellent opportunity and final assessment of our players.”

Fepuleai says there were areas that they identified as were the main weaknesses from their trial matches that have improved during their match against the Brumby’s. “We improved a lot on the set pieces, our forward pack was awarded with two tight heads and also counters the opposition’s rolling maul, and we beat them in the physical contact area.”

The momentum build up for the boys furthered, with the boot of Titi Esau kicking 5 penalties, 1 from Patrick Faapale and 2 tries from Meki Magele and Suamalie Tuiletufuga.

“We are not going to dwell on with the win, we have just started and we would like to keep on with the momentum for the remaining matches.”

Samoa A’s next opponent will be against the Waratahs on the 1st of March.

Samoa A:

1 Gody Schuster, 2. Ofisa Smith, 3, Heroshi Tea, 4. Afioae Maiava, 5. Maselino Paulino, 6. Suamalie Tuiletufuga, 7. Iosefa Timu Sa, 8. Misioka Timoteo (C) 9. Faatalatala Fagasoaia VC, 10. Patrick Faapale, 11,. Faleniu Iosi, 12. Meki Magele, 13. James Roache, 14. Titi Jr Esau, 15. Tupu Ulufale.

Reserves:
Aifala Taelega, Tuliloa Malaga Pauga, Emile Faanene, Maene Mapusaga, Teofilo Lepou, Fale Sooialo, Tafaipaia Sila.

Tries: Meki Magele 1, and Suamalie Tuiletufuga 1.

Conversions: Patrick Faapale 1, and Titi Jr Esau 5

Disappointing indeed. Were you at the game Intruder? Could you tell us how/why it all unfolded?

Sorry mate wasn't at the game, recieved a msg from a friend who was present at this fixture.

" 2 Tightheads " Did Jono Owen and Jerry Yanu start because if this is the same Samoan team that played The Waratahs and Uni in the trials their scrum was very much overpowered.

Tahs were a little disappointing, dropped the ball too often, scrummaged well however and the breakdown was quite good. Way too many penalties conceded by the Tongans at the breakdown which spoilt the game I thought. Tahs won 5 tries to 1 I think.

I thought #3 Lotu Taukeiaho was quite unfit and struggled around the park, #2 Ulugia played a nice tight game with some big collisions, Peterson had a poor game, needs to fix his hands and lineout jumping. #7 Latunipulu was good around the park getting in everything. Betham was class at the end of the game. Grayson Hart took good options and generally gave good ball.

QLD v Fiji
A thrilling late-game comeback and three tries to Queensland A flyer Mitchell Felsman has seen the Fiji Warriors stumble 36-24 in their opening Pacific Rugby Cup clash at Ballymore on Sunday night.
Felsman scored three of the four Queensland A tries to secure victory for his side after they let a comfortable 18-11 halftime lead slip to fall behind 24-18 in the final quarter of the match.
Fiji battled bravely to push their way back into the encounter before Felsman hit top gear to score two late tries, while flyhalf Dallan Murphy put the game beyond doubt with two penalties goals extending the winning margin.
St.George Queensland Reds winger Chris F’Sautia was a standout and showed why he is such a valued young member of Queensland’s FxPro Super Rugby squad with his combination of speed and strength difficult for the Fijians to handle.
Reds Extended Playing Squad scrumhalf Nick Frisby was equally as impressive as F’Sautia with his up-tempo brand of Rugby and tactical kicking game continually putting the Queenslanders on the front foot.
In the forwards captain Eddie Quirk produced a busy performance across 80 minutes where he was a menace at the breakdown and in defence before breaking out with a 40 metre burst in the dying stages of the match.
“It's a credit to the team to see them produce what they did tonight on very little preparation. We only had one training session together and our captain’s run got rained out so it was a really huge effort,” Quirk said.
“The guys showed that they are just naturally talented football players, but we’ve now got a bit more time together so we’re excited by what’s ahead with games against Samoa and Tonga.
“The guys really stepped up and we were forced to adapt. It’s always hard to play the Fijians, they throw it around and it’s a different style of game.
“The Pacific Rugby Cup is also a great concept and it gives the young guys in the Academy an opportunity to be seen to reach their future ambitions.
“It’s also good for the Islanders teams. It’s good to see them come to Australia and get a lot out of it. The Australians play a different style of footy to what they are used to so it’s a good test for them and a good test for us.”
The Fijians did show glimpses of dominance at stages and led 24-18 midway through the second half before two quick tries to Felsman saw Queensland A regain their lead and walk away with a physical and hard earned victory.
“I thought the boys were great today but I think we can be a little better in defence and with our communication,” Fiji captain Apakuki Vuaviri said.
“It’s a new concept the PRC and it will help us a lot as we’re coming up against a lot of competitive teams."
Despite Fiji shooting out to a 3-0 lead it was Queensland A that enjoyed the majority of early attacking opportunities with scrumhalf Nick Frisby and winger Mitchell Felsman both crossing for tries in the opening 20 minutes.
Frisby was the beneficiary of a Chris F’Sautia linebreak down the right touchline while Felsman utilised his speed to finish off a beautifully weighted Dallan Murphy cut-out pass.
Fiji hit back on the stroke of halftime to bring the margin back within a converted try as fullback Metuisela Talebula showed some great individual skills to score a breakaway try, bringing the score to 18-11 in Queensland A’s favour.
That margin disappeared 10 minutes into the second half when Fiji lock Iliesa Ratuva crashed over from close range to bring the scores level, while Talebula gave the visitors their second lead of the match with two successful drop goals in front of the sticks.
Queensland A fought their way back into the match with Felsman scoring two quick tries in succession before two Murphy penalty goals but the result beyond doubt.
Queensland A 36 (3 Mitchell Felsman, Nick Frisby tries, Dallan Murphy 2 cons, 4 pens) def Fiji Warriors 24 (Metuisela Talebula, Iliesa Ratuva tries, Jonetani Talulu con, 2 pens, Metuisela Talebula 2 drop goals)

Got to the Qld v Fiji game late so only really took in the second half.

What struck me the most about this Qld A side was how young they were. Five of them from my count were at school last year! Tell you what though they don't lose anything in size comparison, a couple of them are monsters, and I didn't see any of them looking intimidated when they were on the park.

A 40m carry from the kickoff by Ed Quirk was probably the highlight of the second half, but there was a well constructed play that led to one of Feldsman's tries, and Murphy controlled things well with some judicious kicking. Sautia is certainly a strong ball carrier and UJ looks a balanced runner.

A good win to the young Qld side.
