QLD Colts 2021

Dean Moriarty

It was Mason. With Carter out of prems, he was being considered but they’ve gone with Jono Kent.

Having said that ...... I don't see Mason dominating Bas Ward who has probably been the best 10 in Colts 1 Rugby this year. Jeeps do have a lot of weapons and tbh I have never really been on the Campbell Moller train to the degree that others have, but in truth, he was the best player on the field last week v UQ . Killed it. The hapless UQ midfield had no answer for him or Bas Ward. Or Barker. Or Aubrey.

Having Christian Krause back will help contain Moller in the midfield a bit but where it does get a bit tricky for Wests is that the midfield defense for Jeeps this season has been very very good .........which is why I am baffled that they have moved Gus Rozanowski to the wing when the guy they are replacing him with was part of Jeeps 2's midfield -back line last week that had 5 tries scored on them - noting that the UQ2's had no front foot ball off set piece given their scrum had no answer for the awkward length of Jeeps Darcy Hammonds at 1

Anyway ....it will be interesting to see if Mason and Vahiu Jr can exploit a potential defensive chink in Jeeps midfield

Didn’t get played for starters. Wouldn’t worry about whether cancelled or postponed. I reckon the season is over.

Well they did ....without Moller , that 15m channel was a problem for them the majority of the game .But ....without the size , Jeeps were just a much more conditioned, disciplined and composed team as they clawed their way back under the game management of Bas Ward at 10 , and for mine , a best on ground performance from Jeeps 7 , Lachie Howse. Consistency of defensive effort and ball pressure was pretty good - but very few young backrowers actually play productive link roles in attack. This aspect of Howse's game on Saturday was a difference making impact. He carried into impact with intent , took contact / committed defenders and made smart off loads that led to big territory gains against some of Wests big boys that were just too gassed.

Impressive win for Jeeps against a very competitive Wests team.

JEEPS won on raw talent, talent which wasn’t there last year, the coach seems to be getting them firing with little support,he needs to get some technical support with the scrums and lineout though.

This is why teams of the week are a joke . All respect to Max Hurwood who is an honest , heart and hustle player who anyone would be glad is on their team- he played well but he wasn’t close to Howse and then Geraghty . Noa Zuna (if that was him as Wests 3) demolished the Jeeps scrum and probably deserved a gong.

But good to see Alec Robinson getting some recognition. A junior No 10 / No 12 he hasn't lost any of his ball handling skill and interesting to observe his progression as a lock.

Don't want to criticise the Courier-Mail because any coverage is good coverage and the Team of the Week I am sure is just a bit of fun for the click baited. Will be interesting to see their team of the season and if players get picked in the actual position they play in? Pretty sure Bas Ward is a 10 and Nick Baker a 6 or 8? Also Max Hurwood was listed at 6 but may play 7 too?

The last three Colt Player of the Year awards handed out by QPR rarely actually played Colts.

Mac Grealy who won it last year has only ever played First Grade.

Flook in 2019 and Wilson in 2018.

Wouldn’t be too worried about the CM picking players out of position.

Not sure what you have been watching all year Gidgee but the set piece has been fantastic. The best thing about the GPS colts this year is the lack of "big names" to rely on, yes there is plenty of talent but there is most certainly more to it than that in this big turnaround. The new coaches that have come in seem to have done a great job with this group and turning around the disappointments of the past few seasons! I think the top 4 is very close and they are all in with a shot but giving the young gallopers a big chance of going all the way! Hopefully we can get back underway ASAP as think it will be a cracking finals series whoever takes it out!

The team of the week has been all over the place all year with misspelt names and guys out of position, nevertheless it is great to see grass roots rugby get a write up from the Courier Mail!

Respectfully (and very biased) GPS backrow was pretty rock solid on saturday against Wests, who's big bodies seem to struggle in the big games. Make no mistake Wests have some really good players, which like UQ, begs the question how are they not in the top 4 given the cattle? I think there would be some serious questions asked at Wests and UQ next season in the coaching ranks. Interestingly the 2 most improved colts teams (IMO) are coached by ex wests coaches...

I'm hoping the finals series gets going, amongst all the lockdown speculation as this is our best window to win a premiership. I'm told Easts benefited from some very generous refereeing on saturday against a physical norths team, poor blokes cant take a trick. Easts have gotten out of jail a lot this year, noticeably when their fullback kicked the ball dead against us and a lineout was still awarded, which they ultimately scored from to win the game, similar with a penalty goal some 6 mins after fulltime v Norths in the first round courtesy of Aaron Pook. Good teams find a way to win I suppose

I believe the journos rely on coach input for the teams of the week. Dawso will usually see one game and then do a call around.

I’m not so sure about the Wests situation as to why, but at a surface look, it looks like an over reliance of size that has led to poor conditioning in finishing off games and an over estimation of quality / impact of a few of their key pieces - probably their most coveted forward and a couple of their most coveted backs.

Doesn’t seem to have much volume of depth quality either.

In UQ’s case it is just a good old combo of nepotism and incompetence with a stubborn resistance to make changes that were crying out to be made and that ultimately cost game wins. Said Nepotors and Nepotees have either already bailed or affirmed they won’t be back. Let’s have 3 cheers for culture …..hip hip …(crickets)

LOL! I have to say as an outsider looking in at our west side clubs, I have had many questions around the environments/levels of coaching. I couldn't see Mick Heenan or Carl Marshall being overly happy with their potentially future 1st grade players development this year?

The colts merry-go-round for 2022 will be interesting, any idea where said nepotors and nepotees are headed DM?

^Well,Ruck and Maul,as Billy Joel famously crooned in (bonus points to name the song title)

“Then the King and Queen went back to the Green but you can never go back there again….

Whoa ah oh whoa ah oh”

I was thinking of referencing the Beatles last recorded track on top of the Apple Record Studio on Saville Row (as in Apple Records before there was Apple Computers ) as a way of answering the question but I thought it may have been construed as insensitive and lacking in inclusivity by the Woke Police and they wouldn’t have liked those Apples.

Other teams have been happy with your set piece also,6 or 7 top players who were not there last year and throwing a few thousand bucks at them make the coaches job much easier also.
