QLD GPS 2025

FNC Rugby

Peter Burge (5)
Let’s be honest the QLD GPS rugby is on a serious glow up. Year after year it’s getting better, flashier, and more hyped than ever. Slowly but surely, it’s morphing into a bigger, better, and more marketable beast than the NSW AAGPS. Give it five years and I dare say QLD will leave NSW in the dust.

Sure, NSW has traditionally had slightly stronger players but let’s not forget they’re being slowly swallowed by league focused schools who’d rather kick a Steeden than a Gilbert. And let’s talk about recruitment, this year alone a couple of key 1st XV and 16A's palyers in QLD actually got their start at a NSW AAGPS school.

But where QLD truly wipes the floor? Atmosphere. Culture. School pride. When it comes to passion, NSW just can’t compete. Schools like NC, GT, ACGS, and even BBC put on a show like no other. THE QLD GPS brings the thunder. And let’s be real if school spirit were a try, QLD’s already converted it and kicked the goal from the sideline with the wind against it.

Now respectfully if there were a game between the best of QLD GPS and the best of NSW AAGPS, it’d be a 50/50 matchup. We’re talking about elite talent from both sides, not some random trial game.

Glow up??? Dont forget Nudgee got dusted by Barker College who aren't even the top rugby school in Qld, Shore beat State High recently. NSW is far superior in all under age teams as well.

Happy to be corrected, but fairly sure Nudgee beat Barker in both 2023 & 2024 trial games? No trial against them this year. Speculation of course but I’d be very surprised if last year’s Nudgee side wouldn’t have been extremely competitive against Shore had they played?

TSS game report?
Saw some highlights - looked like Nudgee scrum was dominating in the scrums and lineouts. Backs looked quicker and better drilled than the TSS backs. Score probably flattered NC a little with it pretty even in the first half and NC scoring a few in the 2nd half when the TSS bench came on. Overall they looked a better team but certainly seemed to be some holes in their midfield at times in the first half

Mate let’s not kid ourselves, Barker in 2022 weren’t just good, they were biblically good. Ranked 2nd best schoolboy rugby team on the planet according to NextGenXV (https://nextgenxv.com/schools_rankings/2022-global-top-20/). Sure, they don’t have the ancient scrolls and castle ruins that some schools call “tradition” but that team could’ve beaten a few Shute Shield clubs on a good day.

And speaking of history, Shore lost to BSHS a couple months ago (29-25, in case you missed it), and BSHS were okay at best. So let’s not pretend NSW schools were steamrolling through everyone.

As for underages? Mate, that swings harder than a Year 12 on formal night. Some years NSW dominates, some years QLD hits back. It’s like State of Origin. I can tell you’re a proud AAGPS disciple, and I respect the loyalty, but let’s not ignore the signs: QLD GPS is rising like a suspiciously well fed Year 12 prop.

Times are changing brother.

I went to Southport to watch Nudgee play and all I could see were soccer fields where once were Rugby fields , I asked a young soccer player where the Rugby fields were he didn’t know ! I eventually found 2 sub standard rugby fields- no scoreboard, goal posts that were maybe adequate for under 13’s, concrete drain running 3 metres from sideline length of field, no grandstand, if this is an indication GPS rugby intensity in Qld I fear for the existence of rugby in the future ! What are other Qld GPS school footy fields like ?

Completely agree it is a very sad state. When was soccer ever played over a 1st xv rugby match. The gps competition has been poorly managed, by weak people. It reflects Australian rugby as a whole.

Those are not the rugby fields, they are training fields which they use for trials when the soccer teams are using the main fields. Because winter is split into half soccer and half rugby, the 2 sports share the fields and I suspect there is a similar scenario at most schools, where alternative fields are used for trials (eg Ipswich trials this week are at a local rugby club)

I believe rugby should be played for a full season - home and away matches across 2 terms. We are told soccer and rugby seasons need to be separated as boys want to play both but the truth is, there is very little overlap in players so I can't really see the point

Will Dennis played like he had spiders in his boots, stepping like there was no tomorrow. He hit the ruck with venom. I’m sure his starting debut is within the horizon.
Will Dennis looked to me like the best player on the field for the terrace side by far his execution around the park was professional and was looking for to have a crack, look for opportunities and examine weak defenders.

Where do GT fit him into the starting XV in your opinion? I would love to see him with that number 15 on his back…

100% start him at fullback keep Hales at half with his experience. let Dennis use his game and natural awareness and just let him run, he could be one of the most dangerous players in the comp. It would be a shame if they make him kick, with his rugby knowledge.

Still soccer was played on the main oval why wasn’t 1st & 2nd XV Rugby teams allocated the main oval with covered stand named after a very eminent rugby player obviously soccer is gaining serious momentum at TSS

Very Simple - Rugby is a term 3 sport and Soccer is the term 2 sport.

Soccer get the run of the grounds in Term 2 as far as matches go at NC. Come Term 3, Rugby takes over and soccer nets etc removed and goalposts up on all the fields including those down on that area referred to as the "Flats". It's simply a case of setting up the fields based on the GPS sport that is "officially" on that term.

Two words for you: Treyvon Pritchard

Additionally, James White was a standout for terrace, despite being a young boy. HE PLAYS LIKE A MATURE MAN
Wow wasn't Treyvon electric. Another standout for me was Charlie Hollyman (2024 GPS 1sts XV Team of year) with his experience the GT fowards will be having a field day running behind him.

Overall though neither teams seemed at there best. For GT's first trial not too shabby for the boys from Spring Hill, I'm keen to see how there season pans out. Churchie were alright at best, most plays revolved around Treyvon Pritchard and Sam Williams, both will be key for Chuchie this year. Not expecting heaps from this team though, I'm yet to watch there other trials but it seemed it was Treyvon and Sam Vs GT on the weekend.

Very excited to see GT vs TGS this weekend, I think it will be a massive step up for the boys in Red and Black. Keen to see how they combat the relentless size and power matched up agaisnt them.

How was Hollyman with the lineouts?
