Ladder predictions

1st - TGS
2nd - BBC
3rd - NC
4th - TSS
5th - BGS

have a good feeling about a couple of teams this year, what do you all reckon??

Yeah, look mate, the comp’s going to be extremely close this year. Realistically, I reckon anyone in that top four could take out the premiership.

BGS in 5th feels like a bit of a push. And ACGS at 9th? I honestly think they’ll finish higher than that, especially with some key players returning like their 9, 10, 15, 6, and 7.

Also, game of the season has to be NC vs BBC. It’s BBC Old Boys’ Round and there’s been a lot of hype around both teams this year. But NC played at BBC last year? Seems like the GPS chairman (aka the BBC Headmaster) isn’t ready to give up that home ground advantage just yet hahaha. Classic boater move.

Look im a bias for the boys down south but I believe the "our league boys are better then your league boys" conversation completely points in tss direction their broad league boys across the park is scary and I think they are going to be a force this year

Looks like we’ll find out on Saturday then, won’t we, T.U.G.? Gotta say, it’s shaping up to be a pretty intense trial match to kick things off. But considering TSS haven’t been too flash in their previous trials, I’m backing NC to take home the chocolates.

Word has it from down south is that Kingsley "no mercy" Uys, has been banned from contact drills at training as he is to much of a harm to his teamates, as in the off season he packed on 15kg, now sitting at 128 kilos.

Do we think we will get forum hill back together again for round 9. Would love to see everybody there for a beautiful yarn like last year. I believe the fixture is Nudgee v Terrace at Ross.

Wouldn’t miss it, mate. Battle of the colours, Round 9, on Ross Oval on crisp winter arvo? Doesn’t get much bigger. Word on the street is their Spirit Committee’s cooking up something wild - apparently trying to get skydivers to drop in with the match ball, just like the centenary game in ’91.

Yeah well, NC are still waiting on a few key blokes like Noah Fien, Bond Bradley, Harry Bate, Oli Patterson, Archie Mesritz… the list goes on. And even then, I’m still backing the boys in blue.

ACGS are speedy. BSHS are large af. BGS are street dogs, no one is stopping Big Barry.

Couple of different picks on this list, but I must say I don't mind it. Not too sure about TGS being this high up the ladder I reckon they will be Pretenders yet again, Nudgee are favourites for me. But the only major change I would make would be moving Churchie even lower than 9th! I reckon their time in the GPS is over and time for the vikings to move on to a competition such as the AIC. Not shaping up to be a good year for them, reckon there season could be over after the first trial.

Think of them like a curry pie, maybe a little plain on the outside, but the deeper you dig, the more flavour you find. Take Sam Williams (8), Alfie Bowman (9), Fletcher Austin (10), and Treyvon Pritchard (12), this spine packs serious potential. The loose forwards and inside backs? Locked and loaded. The tight five and back three? Well... let’s just say there’s room for a glow-up. Still, they’re a squad worth watching. I wouldn’t be so quick to slap the “worst in the comp” label on them, especially before they've even laced up for a GPS trial. Give them a run before writing them off.

BBC old boy round is round 2 vs GT according to the school calender. And also having a little go at Andre Cassen (BBC headmaster) is very unfair, he is one of the most lovely humans I know and many BBC students I know speak very highly of him. I was lucky enough to meet him early last year at cricket and had a wonderful chat with him.

Might be time to pack up camp young buck and come back when your voice stops crackling like your Year 6 trumpet solo to drop some real GPS ball knowledge.

Sorry QTT, got off on the wrong foot there I feel I may have overstepped. However, while there is SOME talent in this team I feel they lack the powerful engine in the tight 5, aswell as punch in the backs to do real damage. I'm just picturing a ruck late in the game where the Churchie tight 5 are unfit and sucking in the big ones, unable to set the defence and a nifty number 9 such as Kefu (BBC) or Hales (GT) just tears them to shreds around the ruck. You pointed out some shining lights in the team, but may I also add returning player and captain Thomas Wood (7) who brings relentless workrate and tikka to the undergunned Churchie pack.

My friend, it's clear that you simply don’t grasp the full picture do you? Let me spell it out for you.

From the 2024 Nudgee First XV, nine out of fifteen players had been enrolled since Year 5. The year before? Even more so. So to claim that Nudgee “buys” players simply because they happen to come from a league background is not only misinformed, it’s embarrassingly reductive.

You also seem to be forgetting - or perhaps were never aware - that Nudgee is a boarding school. A significant proportion of its rugby cohort are boarders hailing from rugby league-dominated regions like Yeppoon, Rockhampton, Goondiwindi, Moree, Roma, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast. Naturally, when these boys arrive, they gravitate towards local league clubs like Norths or the Dolphins, given their familiarity with the code. Hence the increase in Nudgee boys playing in Representative and Club league teams.

And speaking of the Dolphins, Nudgee has a formal partnership with them. This isn’t breaking news. It’s been public knowledge for years. So yes, when scouts show up, particularly from league, of course they're going to approach players already embedded in the network.

Now let’s address your point about scholarships. Nudgee is currently operating under significant financial constraints and has reduced the volume of scholarships, aside from bush bursaries. If you're looking for a school aggressively acquiring students in Years 9 and 10 with sporting scholarships, look no further than BBC. Their scholarship numbers are astonishing — and yet, despite all that investment, they couldn’t win a single match against Nudgee last season, not even one.

Let’s also not pretend Union is thriving untouched by external pressures. Rugby league is overtaking Union at pace. To deny that is to admit you're either willfully ignorant or completely out of touch with the current state of GPS rugby.

Now, I won’t insult your intelligence by denying that Nudgee recruits league players - because of course we do. So does every other GPS school. But to paint Nudgee as the same “cash cow” it once was is a gross exaggeration. If you've done your homework - and I suspect you haven’t - you'd know that for 2025, the schools leading in scholarship numbers are TGS, BBC, TSS, and even GT.

So before you throw around accusations with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, do try to come equipped with facts - not outdated narratives and misinformed generalisations.

Damn I must of hit a nerve there lol …. don’t want to start naming names mate but 5 met north u15 league nudgee boys this year. most nudgee boys ever. Last year was also 4 or 5. And yes 2024 and 2025 will have some boys enrolled in year 5. I was targeting 2026 onwards, how many boys in current u15 and u16 started in year 5? 3 or 4 already and they are 2-3 years away from graduation! The point is Nudgee don’t develop players anymore like the glory years when you had 5 or 6 players in the Queensland schools team and 3 or 4 in Aus schools team. Fluke, pasetoa and captain Harry vella. You had one out n out league player bulemor. Now it’s the other way around. Brothers Colts used to be the envy of other clubs when most Nudgee boys 1st, 2nds even 3rds play there after school. Union boys! Now most will play league after school. Brothers Colts 1 didn’t even make finals last year and only won 1 game this year! It’s just sad, wrong or rightly, the most iconic name in schools rugby union Australia is now producing more professional rugby league players than union and its going to get worse! Now that is a fact!
