Tom Lynagh announcing medical retirement this year would be one of the most high-profile concussion-based retirements across any sport we've seen to date.
Regardless of where you sit with him in the Wallabies flyhalf rankings, he would essentially be retiring whilst very much on an upwards trajectory and likely with a decade of test match rugby ahead of him. Or even if he fell out of Wallabies favour, there would be millions of dollars thrown at him to play D2 Japanese rugby.
Boyd Cordner of the Sydney Roosters in the NRL is the probably the current most high-profile Australian retiree, hanging up the boots at 28yrs old and at the time the incumbent captain of NSW SOO and the Roosters.

Worth noting there has been no official announcement on Volavola, but given the previous remarks about Carter fitting into a side with the existing young 10s I don't think it gets in the way too much.
Last year the Reds had O'Connor, Creighton, Lynagh, and HMP on the books and weren't keen on losing any of them (but couldn't match offers for Creighton/O'Connor). This year it was Lynagh, HMP, Mason Gordon, and Gibbs, even if Gordon and Gibbs weren't used. Not much problem carrying 4 tens in a squad, assuming one or two of them have a bit of flexibility.
I'd chip in cash to make this happen. Surely we can get a gofundme up and running

I don't know if the maths would make sense in 2026.
Mason and Gibbs would have surely been on a fair bit less money than Carter and Volavola would be - you're essentially replacing two development players with a Wallaby and senior flyhalf who's been playing in Europe.

I wouldn't expect a retirement announcement for Lynagh just yet, but bringing Carter home and having Ben allows for Tom to have an extended break to allow his brain to settle.
We saw with the Broncs this year that the aging players have a propensity to go bang with catastrophic injuries so I'd be mindful on not asking Ben to play big minutes.

I'd be pretty surprised if Volavola was on any decent money - he's been out of a gig since Leicster let him go and if the Reds were willing to spend real money on an experienced 10 they would've signed O'Connor. You'd have top assume Carter would be arriving with a top up too, making it a bit easier. They wouldn't be cheaper than Mason/Gibbs, but they might be similar to what Creighton/O'Connor were on, and easier to fit in if Lynagh has also picked up a top up (or is on track for one).

It does make you think if they can bring JP home, having Carter and Jordan in the 15/23 does solve a challenge this years Reds had; size in the backline.

Is this the same Carter Gordon that left the Reds in '21 for the Rebels because we wasn't getting what he believed he deserved, bombed at the last World Cup and deserted rugby altogether to join one of the worst performing NRL teams, the Titian's, again because he wasn't given what he wanted.? Surely our wonderful code has more pride than this.

And for record the whole team bombed at the last WC.
I remember the departure of Carter from the Reds and it wasn't pretty. The kid was going to be a success but his manager got in the way. It wasn't his own doing. When the Rebels folded he was returning back to the Reds but RA stuffed that up. The club has welcomed him back and Kiss most likely the instigator which speaks volumes. In professional sport there will always be players that are better and that should give young players something to aspire to and learn from. We have Tom Lynagh and if time on the field is managed between him and Carter, we have a better shot in the finals than we did this year. I think they will be great at sharing the position and we do need to consider Tom's concussions. A terrific signing for the Reds and Wallabies.

Who are these young, loyal, up and coming players that will be impeded?
Both Lynagh and HMP have had large bouts of unavailability for selection this year and we had multiple instances where Jock had to start or finish games at 10.
So who from the academy is ready to start at Super Rugby that will be impacted?
