12. Tapuai
13. CFS

15. Toua to be given a couple more goes to see if he can come good.

I think that is our best combination, and have said so since before our first trial game. However I feel that Harris was pretty good last night, despite the obvious 'far cups'. Taps only has 7 minutes on the field, but just looks so much better in that channel next to Quade.

Aidan is an issue, clearly he is very dangerous and could be a genuine match winner, but he is making too many errors. I think we just need to persist, as he can't learn anymore from club rugby. The reality is, he is showing potential and we don't have any other genuine fullbacks ready to go (Lachy is not a 15).

I think this is the only thing that lets him keep his spot.

So many errors and poor decisions. Yes he is very dangerous in attack but he can't rely on that. I don't understand why his kicking as been so poor, every game I've seen him play before this season, his kicking as been near perfect.

But you're right, we don't have another genuine fullback who is ready. JJ Taulagi and Jonah Placid are long-term, and Harris/Lucas are not the type of fullback we need.

Ive only watched bits and pieces, but CFS for me has cemented the 13 jersey as his own, he is really the only Reds back line member injecting physicality and breaking tackles at the moment.

Agreed CFS had cemented the 13.

Toua is a real liability at the moment - some of his errors are just so costly. Poor kicking, bad decisions, dropped balls. You can see the potential, but unless he can temper the mistakes he won't make it at this level, and he must be nearing his last chance.

Who would be the next cab off the rank? The only other fullbacks are youngsters - Placid, JJ. If JOC (James O'Connor) does return (which is something to be scared of currently), you'd expect it'd be at fullback.

The scrum is also all over the shop. Agree the Reds need a stable THP, feel sorry for Slipper watching the TH side get shunted frequently.

The last issue is just dumb mistake at the wrong times. The Reds just can't keep applying pressure this year as they make dumb mistakes letting the other team back in - vs the Sharks last night for example they blow a lineout, then a bit later give away two penalties off the Sharks lineout, including a yellow card.

Aside from his bombed try, Harris ran some good lines.

I haven't seen anything from Tapuai to warrant starting selection.
Don't get me wrong, I think Harris is good and will never let the team down, but Taps is and always will be a 12. His best football has been at 12, and his best football will be at 12.

Taps is not a 13, and not picking him at 12 based on his form at 13 is some kind of flawed logic.

Harris is the perfect bench player due to varied positions he covers, and is able to play a lot of positions at super rugby level - something others (like Taps) simply cannot do.

Tbh, if Toua doesn't work out as hoped, then Harris at fullback and reversion to the old "QC (Quade Cooper) at fullback in defence" switheroo will do me fine. Harris didn't let the wallabies down back there and he won't let the reds down either.

I just don't know what to make of Toua. Anyone can see that he has potential, but then so do some of the rookies to reds kiddies that run around at half time whose ball security % is about the same :S. Anytime the ball goes near him, I fear I am about to go into cardiac arrest just thinking about what shit is about to go down (good or bad). I can only imagine what the other players must be thinking.

One thing I'm noticing we are doing more is the stupid 1% chip kicks or grubbers. It crept into the Wallabies under Deans and once ingrained it has to be coached out. They can be deadly when used in the 1% of circumstances that they should be used but the rest of the time they just gift possession away, give an opportunity for the oppo to counter attack and the worst of all, they send a very clear message to the oppo; "we don't think we can break your line so we'll resort to chips and grubbers."
It needs to stop.

Dribbly little grubbers have comeacross from Mungoland. You see them all the time in the NRL games. It has infiltrated Heavensgame like the Cane Toad.

Dingo just seemed to embrace them more than his predecessors. Not sure that he introduced them per se, but he appears to have done little to stamp them (and the Hail Mary chip and chase) out of CLub Wallaby.

they serve a purpose when executed well, problem is that there aren't really any good tactical kickers in Australian Rugby at the moment who can execute them well, so ultimately they are just wasted ball.

Tactical kicking is a real weakness in Australian rugby, I'm not sure why that is given we are surrounded by sports who specialise in the field, you would think there would be some intellectual property spilling over.

But we don't know how many tries we would've scored last night if we'd kept the ball in hand. I'd say it would be more than the amount of tries we scored from a chip/grubber.

It's just the low percentage plays that give me the shits. Another one; Genia takes a quick tap on a penalty when there really wasn't much on. Runs about 10m then puts a kick through to find touch.
In general play, that's a good option but from a penalty, we could've kicked for touch and had the throw in to a line out in the same spot instead of defending a line out.

Unlikely more tries but probably some penalties.

The hit rate of scoring tries when entering the opposition 22 and keeping the ball in hand wouldn't be 50%.

I just had the opportunity to watch the game. I am a subscriber to Kostatz and for some reason he didn't air the replays. The most frustrating thing was that I was that despite being fairly sure the game had already been played, but not being one hundred percent sure of the time of kickoff, I couldn't check any of the main rugby sites for the schedule since they would have also listed the result if it had already been played. Finally out of complete desperation I searched youtube for the game, not expecting much since there is usually a two day delay before games are posted, and yet found that the game had already been posted for 7 hours. Anyway, the game and thread is now old, and I've waffled on so much now that no-one is going to bother reading further so I'll start new post,

Re Toua

he is an elte athlete, with speed, balance, acceleration and I am sure he could represent at the highest level in many sports. His type absolutely dominate junior and schoolboy footy, because of that god given talent. He is an excellent footballer, but is he an elite rugby player ........not on what I have seen so far. Its little skills like knowing how to position yourself as the contact comes in order to quickly recycle, being aware of the separation between yourself and support, and others

I dont have any data, but here is a list of players that seem (or seemed) to be not as quick as Aidan. How many would rate ahead of him on your lists. Btw I hope Toua has a long career and proves me wrong.....please.

Brian O Driscoll
Tim Horan
Israel Dagg
Dan Carter
Leigh Halfpenny
Conrad Smith
Joe Roff.

others?

First thought :

Why isn't Beau starting at 6? Hopefully he will be after this weekend. Especially after the first half when the sharks just destroyed the Reds at the breakdown. The Reds/we have a very good line out, so do the Sharks, it was parity. The sharks have a better scrum but we held close to parity. But the Reds got destroyed at breakdown. In the modern game the breakdown is a 15 man game, losing it can't be blamed just on the three loosies(or loonies if autocorrect is correct), but they have to play a part.

Beau is fairly placed behind Gill as the second best 7. But against the Lions last year, when Gill wasn't available, he took a step up and pretty much prison raped the supposedly best number 7 in the entire home nations. The Reds are weak in two areas, scrum and breakdown. There is little more they can do in the scrum, they play an intelligent scrum and continue to come out in parity against more dominant scrums. But in the breakdown they are not close to parity against the top teams and have make some changes. And the easiest change seems to be starting Beau at 6.
