I don't think it was obvious. The ball clearly bobbles and Doleman sees that (hence the hesitation) but then does see a grounding so he awards the try and gets it reviewed.

If Bealham maintains contact with the ball the whole way to the ground then it is a try even if he is in the process of losing control of it.

I think he could have also said knock on straight away and still had it reviewed. I guess the difference is that if it wasn't clear and obvious then his initial decision would have remained.

Idk I just watched it back on my phone then and I really, really struggle to see how the ball being where it was and his hands being where they were could lead him to awarding that. Humans make mistakes but he is pulling up the collective average.

In super final on Saturday night when Crusaders missed out on a try because Hotham was offside at the tackle. TMO pointed it out to Gus, played it on big screen, and Gus agreed wholeheartedly agreed it was offside, but then said, I will just see if Damon agrees. Seemed to just be waste of time after spending time watching it in big screen a few times, and discussing it with TMO etc. Especially when we want things hurried along a bit.

In the heat of the moment I thought it would get looked at, and still being salty with Doleman's reffing against the Tahs I may have ascribed some level of approbation to him. Looking back, it's a little less clear cut.

The Horowhenua RU in NZ have cancelled all rugby this Saturday as a reminder to so called supporters about ref abuse etc, Apparently a ref in a college game got some real bad abuse from out of town supporters last week, to the point where local supporters stayed with him etc after the game, until he got to his car. They has said they were getting sick of shit that happens at games at time so have made a point. I know my club form down there are in full support of move(as probably the others), I know I get stick on here(and other places) for saying I believe that the refs decision is final and should be accepted, and how I always taught vthat to teams I coached, but I really think this is what happens when things trickle down. I have seen and heard same stuff for so long, and I remember in Brisbane cops being called to make sure a ref wasn't going to cop stuff after a game. And anyone who says ,but we only abuse pro refs who get paid, what get's accepted at any level will trickle down.

Was at a 3rd grade club game on Saturday in the Naki, (club I follow), and was interested to see the ref being real strict on tackle below the sternum. First time I have really noticed it (and actually thought it was for age grade only). But the ref stuck to his guns and was surprised how the players adapted, and seemed to be reasonably comfortable by oranges. Was funny as at that grade , a few older players and a lot of grappling etc usually. Until players got in the swing of the ref not changing, whichever team defended got penalised a fair bit, but as I say both adjusted. One of the consequences at this grade of rugby was actually a bit more open game as players were releasing the ball in tackle a bit more etc. Hving a beer with ref after game(I always try to) he was saying how at frist he wondered if he was being too hasrh with the number of penalties etc, but was pleased how it ended up He actually normally refs higher grades etc.

Agree with the ref on the logic (stupid as it may be, that's what the law says)

I do think at least some of the ball is pretty clearly over the plane of touch though. A mm above any of the white line would be enough

I've noticed that some grounds seem to broadcast the referee's explanation through the PA. Does anyone know if they do that at Bruce? I'm going to the Brums game on Wednesday and need to know if I should be going out and buying a set of sports ears, after I lost my old one many years ago.

Only very limited amount of ref time on the mike over the speakers last night, only when explaining the TMO stuff, and half the time not even that.


Get the sports ears if that's not enough, probably depends how familiar you are with ref secondary signals etc

Never. Anything close to a decision should always be human.

There will be applications for AI in quick clipping and identifying incidents in the future, but honestly that might cause more problems than it solves.

It was the opposite at times - it was the TMO who chimed in on the Lancaster try about Lee-Warner's clean out, and Williams who said there was nothing to see.

The man with the whistle isn't going anywhere, but It will happen to some degree sooner or later. A lot of sports either already integrating or expanding their use of ML/AI into their judging processes from Football (Soccer), Tennis, Golf, Gymnastics etc. There is no reason the TMO need be just a human scrubbing video feeds when their role is to support the referee.

There are already systems like Trackswift (https://www.personar.ai/solutions/rugby) used in Rugby and you could see some of the post game footage analyst platforms like Framesports (https://framesports.ai/) and RugbySmarts (https://www.rugbysmarts.com/) style platforms etc. being able to operate realtime with live feeds.
